It was suggested that I start a thread here, so that makers that are in the gift exchange can tell others what they like in a knife. This way, you'll be able to look for a post by the maker that you're making for and find out what that person likes.

I thought it was a great idea, and decided to do as suggested.

If you're in the gift exchange, tell us what you like in a knife.

I'll be putting the letters in the mail on September 5, so you all will soon be finding out who you're making a knife for and can check here to see what that person likes best.

I'll kick it off.

I like medium sized drop point hunters. I like carbon steels. Stainless is ok, but I prefer non-stainless. I like natural handle materials, instead of man-made. I'm not a micarta, plastic of any kind, type of fan. I also enjoy larger chopping, camp style knives.

I like a knife that the maker has thought about.
That is not as glib as it seems. Planning and designing a knife are skills to be admired.
As far as styles, I like almost all types. Tanto blades are one of my favorite ( Japanese style, not Tactical-tanto).

I live in a rural, wooded area and train in knife combatives. I really enjoy practical survival/fighters. Cord wrap, micarta and wood all make good handles as each has a practicality value. Subdued, non-reflective finish is a big plus. My personal fav. designs range from Beck's WSK to various tactical tantos.

me personally like what ever the makers favorite is. His favorite way to make them always turns out to be the best looking knives he makes

I like most knives, I like micarta, G10, wood, camping and working knives with thin edges. I would most want a knife that the maker is proud of. An example of handles I like are done by Bob Dozier and Phillip Patton. My favourite blade shape is drop or clip point, however any blade shape is fine with me. I would be happy with anything!

edit: I don't mean to sound too specific, I don't want the maker to change their style. Anything goes for me.

OK I know this is going to make me sound like a smarta$$,
I like a knife that is sharp and can cut. (the cigarrete paper test is a good one!)
All other parameters are up to the maker, do your best work.
Thanks,
Del

I like what the maker is best at,I'm not too hard to please, plus I like surprises:)Regards Butch

I'm going to like whatever the maker puts his best effort in. I think that's the whole point in getting one from another maker, to get a piece of his talent, effort, sweat, experience, craft and skill level. He shouldn't worry about making one to my liking...
I hope that dosen't sound bad.

Wow...good idea, but I don't know what to say. I love folders, but that's a select crowd of makers. Fixed...hmmm...I'd have say simple drop point or clip point with a swedge, the latter of the two is more preferred. I like tactical style in those, carbon steels with a light patina (not blotchy). Handle material G10 or Micarta, darker colors (black, gray, dark green). Amazingly I haven't made anything that fits this (in it's entirety anyway).

By the way... I think it would be Kewl if the maker took pics of the process to give with the knife... I'm going to.

I lean towards Scagel type knives. Jim Behring does a fine job on his renditions. I'm not very fond of "plastic" handles, I own none and have made very few. Natural handle materials are the way to go. While large knives are not very practical in this day and age, they're great to play with. Dealing with hunters the last few years has convinced me that compact is the trend. I rarely make knives over 10" (seems huge) now and know they get used.

All that being said....Please make whatever you're comfortable with. Making something you like usually outshines anything you feel forced to make.
Now get crackin!!!!

I'm not picky. New knives make me happy:D My first preference would be whatever you are good at and like making.

BUT

I'd love a new fixed blade EDC about the size of my razel (eg: fixed blade pocket knife). Bushcraft blades will always find a home too. I've got all the blades I need...except a kukri, :D but that is asking for too much I'm afraid.

I am not picky about materials either...just have fun and do your best

After doing a little grinding on this topic, I personally know that I have all the knives I need. This is going to be like going to a curio shop and finding that thing that you didn't even know you couldn't live without.

A little wordy but I hope you guys get my point

I've never meet a style that I didn't like. Whatever the maker is comfortable with is fine with me.
I do prefer natural material over man-made as well.

I like a mid size EDC style, 3-4in blade. I have little peference in steel. I'm easy, midsized and sharp is about it. I did tend to like flat and scandi grinds.

What ever type of knife the maker has the inspiration to make is fine with me. I think makers are more inspired if they make what they want and the results usually show it.

Trench knives and autos are illegal here, other than that its a free for all.

I don't care for a 2" blade w/ a 5" handle, prefer 'good ballance'. Sharp w/ a good point. Other than that, anything goes. Make what you're comfortable with, put your heart into it and have fun!!!

I'd like a short statement of oragin [nothing fancy!] w/ a little about you to go with it. :)
