2008 Knifemakers Gift exchange companion thread

Make something that gets you excited. Maybe, a new handle material or design. Perhaps something you have been putting off trying.

Thank you Steven. I meant to mention that if you have any legal restrictions in your area now is a good time to say so.

as well as freakishly large handed, or left handed people.

Folder'd be my preference if the person making it for me has the option. If not then a SMALL fixed blade. Something under 3,5'' (blade) so I can still carry it around legally.

Because hey....I've gotta show off my only custom blade that wasn't made by me ;-)

(Dutch legal limit is 9 cm (around 3,5 inches) blade for any knife.)

Oh yeah, and I'm a lefty.

Uh oh! I am making a 4 3/4" (12 cm) fixed blade...
If I get you I will make a different knife, but it would make my progress thread different...

If it is larger can you still have it shipped to you?

Yeah, I just wouldn't be able to use it for any kind of EDC. I'd still take it out camping though. Legal to OWN....just not to carry.

The first custom I made myself is about 5" as well. I'd still be ecstatic....about what I'd recieved...I'd just be even MORE happy if it was within legal limits.

I will be pleased with what ever i recieve, but like small knives with left hand sheaths that i can use for everyday chores.

The knife I like the most is the one that can be used every day. If I'm at work it's one type, at camp another, in the kitchen another. I like the pragmatic, the practical, the right tool for the right job. I will be overjoyed with any knife I receive, I feel lucky to participate.

It just occurred to me that if we're being given the name and address of the person we're making a knife, we have no way of telling what there forum name is.

or are you sending that out as well?

I would prefer a knife i can use daily. Which means it needs to be a folder or a smaller sized fixed blade.. Ive never owned a NeckKnife but spend a lotta time looking at them.

That being said, I DONT CARE what you make me i,ll be happy with anything.

I have to say that i am a member of the make a knife that you would like to own club, i think that the knife a man carries says a lot about them.

This will be the first knife i make, and also my first custom. That being said above all, I'm looking forward to a knife with flesh and soul to it.

In terms of knife niches to fill, I don't have a good backpacking/survival knife. a rather lightweight one is prefured, i dont need a chopper. my preference would be horizontal carry if you're making a sheath, but nothing wrong with vertical. A folding edc would be loved just as much. the local resctriction is 4 inches i think. But make what you want, i promise i will love it.

and just a word on knife laws. I'm Canadian so nothing that meets the NY definition of gravity knife will get through customs. If it is a folder, tighten the bolts down so it cant be flicked. and no knuckle guards, or double edged blades.

Real name: Paul D. Smith and I am right handed, My address has changed to P.O. Box 618 Union, KY 41091

This is like going to see Santa:D I would like a EDC fixed blade or folder with a sheath that I can wear on the right side hip. I am partial to thiner full flat grinds with a convex finish for a blade that is scary sharp. I want a user with a satin or bead blast finish. I also like camp blades. Handle material can be anything.

Above is what I want, but what I will be really happy getting is a one of a kind custom that is made to the best ability of the maker who draws my name and is of a style or type that the maker is best at producing.

I am so excited to be part of this exchange! Giving and recieving items that are a passion for all of us is awesome! What great fun!

I am not picky at all. I love all sorts of knives so I am sure I will like what I get. Size is not an issue with me, nor is handle material type. Be rest assured though I will use it.:)

The kinds of things I like best; period knives or at least old time looking knives, high flat grinds, daggers, natural handle materials. but that is what I do so...... At the same time I am always happy to get knives that are far from what I would make ie hollow grinds stainless steel carbon fiber, ya know modern type stuff (though I have started using micarta just because it works so darn good).

Again no worries I will like what ever I get!

Most likely I will be making an Integral for the exchange but I am going to wait until I see who I have to decide for sure.
I am sooooo exited!!!!

I would like to make a knife with a thin edge, but do not have a grinder to put an edge on after heat treating. I also want a nice heat treat, not a campfire heat treat like on my first knife. Maybe I can sweet talk somebody with a kiln :)

I'm not picky at all. I'm very new to this whole knife making experience, so I would appreciate almost anything ( I only add the the "almost" because you never know what some people will say). I just want the maker to be creative, I like things that are unique ( which is possibly why I'm dating JT :) ). Good luck and have fun making it!!!

HA Ha, very funny.

I gues its my turn. I am a out door person and love camping. but I also love knives so I want the maker to make what he feals inspired to make. I think a knife turnes out better if you let it take you where it wants to go and not try and force it to be somthing it does not want to be. If its sharp and made with the spirt of giving i will love it. even if its not sharp i can sharpen it ;). I do love natural materials on carbon steel, as i think the handle materal will age with the blade and create a very fine aged look. but im not picky at all, just put your heart into it and give it your all.

I prefer a natural handle material, the only thing I need is the sheith to be left handed. Other that that what ever you are comfortable with and as other before stated just from the heart, when I'm gone I'll pass it to the grandkids and if they are not left handed that's tough.

I'm pretty new to making them, but I know that I've never seen a knife I didn't like. Some more than others perhaps.

Whatever I get, it'll be awesome.
