2009 Forum Knife - Barlow won by a nose

I'm not a big barlow kinda guy myself, but I'm keeping an open mind. I'll probably go in for one.

I'd agree with skipping the stag, got it last year anyway, and it could have been better, guess I just like it better on a big knife. Bone, jigged or saw cut, grooved, etc (just not yellow!) or maybe jigged Micarta, or just for something different the grooving that looks like rams horn, can't think of what it's called at the moment. D2 is just fine, 1095 etc also good, I'd actually prefer the traditional two different sized blades on a barlow, main in say a spear or warny, not a fan of the looks of a clip on a barlow, small blade pen, sheepsfoot or warny(assuming main blade aint, heh).

I'm pretty open I guess, not being a big fan of the barlow shape kinda leaves me open that way, not real wedded to any particular configuration.
Only deal breakers for me would be if it's too small (under 3.5, 3.25 min) or yellow, or just some way out wacky set up. Good luck guys hope you come up with something great!

The loudest complainer will automatically be nominated as next year's Forum knife facilitator(I hope it gets to be Wintermute:D)

Half of all money collected will have to go to my divorce attorney :)

What can I say, I don't like D2 - that's the only REAL deal breaker for me.

My druthers..

3 7/8 - 4 in
carbon steel
2 blade (clip and pen)
green corncob jigged bone
long bolster
BF logo stamped on bolster
No blade etch
year on tang stamp

I aggree, I only like to play with carbon steel. I am mostly open to anything else, but would like it to be as traditional as possible, you know "don't fix what ain't broke".

Like I said, steel and materials will most be influenced by the folks making the knife.
Not everyone uses D2, 1095, ATS-34 etc. If we pigeonhole the steel/material we limit the companies who will bid.

We are going to choose the best value possible.

That's a really good point. If get the most companies to bid for the knife, I think we will end up with a better product and a great price in the end.

God Bless

True, it's best to let the companies compete and state what they can offer rather than limiting them straightaway with strict steel/scales combos, size too.

But, in this vein why not tempt them further by offering us a Barlow AND Swayback mix, meaning around 145 knife run:D For all of us embittered Swayback fans muttering recount:D I realize this is not feasible but Swayback Got More:thumbup: The forum knife is as always in good hands and soon it will be in the users' (not so good...)hands. Good luck to the project and hope you are feeling OK now Gus,all that talk of Boses and wills gave me the shudders!

I like the sound of that!

Good call...

The counts are verifiable. The reversals are there in the thread and in my private messages.

The majority voted for Barlow. There will be no recount. If anyone wants to recount they are welcome too and if they found I made a mistake we can go from there.

145 knife run seems a little high since last year we had around 50. :D.

This is a club knife. The majority made a decision. I wanted a sunfish due to the fact that they hold and increase in value, I lost that suggestion and we need to get over the fact that some of us are not going to get the pattern we had hoped for.

I jumped in last year, and was disappointed by what I got. That’s nothing about Ed. It’s about the maker. When I sent the Forum Knife back to Northwoods Knives with a list of problems, I was told, “We could fix them for you. But you’d hate the result worse than what you have now.” I asked them to send it back, and it’s become a drawer queen in the original box.

This year I’ll wait for more information before I commit myself.

If you are willing to sign up at this point, let me know. All I am going to say now is that we are going to go with a natural material probably bone maybe stag or micarta.

Post Scriptum:
When did Micarta become a natural material?

It's canvas or linen or some other type of cloth... I guess that's more natural then fiberglass. I like micarta better then bone or stag.

What was wrong with it?? Pics?

No pictures, but this is what I wrote when I returned the knife:

1: At one of the joints where the stag scale meets the bolster, I can slide a piece of paper into the whole gap. It’s the side and end next to where the spay blade pivots.

2: You started with good looking stag scales. But to mount the escutcheon you trimmed the half the scale until you there was no stag figure left, just a smooth surface. What a waste of a great handle material. I like stag, and it irritates me to see it trimmed down until it looks like bone. I’d never have bought this particular knife if I’d been able to handle it first.

3: The thumb notch on the spay blade seems to be badly shaped. More often than not, in order to pull that blade open, I have to press so hard that the spay blade scrapes against the sheepsfoot blade. That sheepsfoot blade is building a nice collection of scratches.
