Well,
I might be foolish enough to organize it this year, but in any case though we could start tossing around ideas.

The first thought that hit me was the GEC was going to start on Sunfish soon and I like the idea of a Sunfish in Stag.

Any other thoughts? Any volunteers?

I wanted to get things going early this year. ;).

I love GEC knives. Sounds nice, but wouldn't that push the price near $200? The #23 pioneer in stag runs $174 - $199. Seems like we had trouble reaching 50 knives in 2008 due to the bad economy. 2009 probably won't be much better, so an expensive production knife may not be an easy sell to many forum members. I usually buy larger GEC knives in bone to keep the cost around $100.

Alas, my conversion to slippies was too late to get the 2008 knife but I am interested in 2009.

I like the sunfish idea. I like the stag as well, but as was stated above, it may drive the price up pretty high on a bigger knife.

Is there a chance GEC would do a small run in an inexpensive yet unusual scale material? One that could be unique to the forum knife? I am thinking about something like a nice honey buffalo horn, something unusual. Anything that would set it apart from the normal production run.

How about a Sepentine Jack or some sort of two bladed Jack knife, also anyone know how much it would cost to have a custom made single bladed knife of some sort, maybe a Sod Buster.

Would it be feasable to think one could be made for an affordable price, sorta entry level handmade with simple design, it might put a handmade knife in the hands of members who might not be able to buy one otherwise?

Just my thoughts and also my way of keepin' track of the 2009 Forum knife.:D

I like the idea of Bone maybe I was dreaming on the stag.

Keep in mind when these came out, I was able to pick them up at 80 bucks or less
(Does not include the 2 MOP examples which ran quite a bit more).

Any Customs would run at least 200 at the very least.

I am going to focus on factory, but if anyones wants to head up a custom run, please be my guest.

I was only able to find one maker who would consider it and I doubt a custom knife project could be completed in a year.

The Sunfish catches my eye but I've never considered purchasing one. I was a user long before I was a collector so I lean towards Barlows, Canoes, Single Blade Trappers and even Sowbellies if they have a Clip or Spear main blade and vice-versa as one of the remaining blades. All of those could have a distinctive shield to commemorate the forum.

Is it just me or would a single blade 3.5" - 3.75" swayback wharncliffe jack from GEC like the Case below(minus the pen blade) be an absolute winner? GEC could use it to fill the hole they have between the 3" #25 Barlow and the 3.75" #73 Scout. I think they would fly off the dealer's shelves and make a great forum knife for us.

What about an older pattern that isn't much in production anymore?--Like when Waynorth brought back those terrific Harness Jacks? I picked one up in goldenroot bone and it is a wonderful tribute to the past.

I'd be in for a pocketable Swayback Jack, Swayback Gent or Dogleg Jack. Plenty of utility in a two-bladed knife, and if it were made/finished by S&M, Canal, Queen or Northwoods, would have a distinctive look from the recent Case Swaybacks, which are currently offered only in SS. Carbon steel or D2 might work for collectors and users alike.

augustus88, you beat me to it. I was actually going to mention one wharncliffe blade, but didn't want to push my luck. ;)

What about a spearpoint barlow with a carbon steel blade? That would be the perfect knife for these tough economic times.

My humble suggestion.

Since the simple peanut dominated this forum in 2008, how about a forum peanut?

A wharncliffe blade on a Jack sounds pretty darn good too. ;).

Keep those ideas coming.

If it's a Sunfish pattern your after, Canal Street Cutlery made a Wildcat Driller, very similar to the Sunfish. the pattern is already there, maybe with the addition of stag handles or another bone style other than there standard Amber bone. could work!

I forgot to mention, thanks for taking this on, or at least consider taking it on. Much appreciated.

The amber bone Wildcat Driller from Canal Street is $130. Add a higher cost handle material plus the engraving and you're probably up about the same cost as a GEC with stag. I have a feeling that $100 is around the comfort threshold for the average collector/user. I can afford more, but I just can't justify spending $170 - $200 for a knife. I'll probably never own a custom knife because of this.

I am open. I am a huge fan of the sunfish pattern, and the harness jack, and the peanut, and the....lol

Since I was late to the slip joint party to get in on 08 knife. I do not want to miss out on the '09 knife.

What about talking to some of BF's knife makers? I am sure one of them could make a special knife for us? It is just a though. What about Mike Alsdorf? Perhaps a Peanut?

I'd be really into some sort of wharncliffe jack.

Secondly, I'd also be into a peanut.
