2009 Forum Knife - getting started on ideas.

What about talking to some of BF's knife makers? I am sure one of them could make a special knife for us? It is just a though. What about Mike Alsdorf? Perhaps a Peanut?

Each year, letting a different maker who posts here have a say in the pattern would be fantastic. Ken or Tony or whomever could help suggest a pattern, or even help refine a pattern based on their own designs. We could benefit from having a maker-designed pattern, they could benefit from giving more people access to their designs, and encouraging them to move up to their fully-custom pieces.

Again.

This knife will be a factory knife.

If anyone wishes to head up a custom knife as a group they are welcome to do so.
(I tried and am not willing to go any further on a custom. There just are not many makers out there including Tony or Ken E. or Ken C. that have the bandwidth to take on a run of 12 to 16 knives.)

As far as prices. Keep in mind we were able to get stag on a Canal Steet ring opener sleeve board at a lower price that the bones were going "on the street". Whatever is chosen the price will be kept at around 100 give or take 20.

The amber bone Wildcat Driller from Canal Street is $130. Add a higher cost handle material plus the engraving and you're probably up about the same cost as a GEC with stag. I have a feeling that $100 is around the comfort threshold for the average collector/user. I can afford more, but I just can't justify spending $170 - $200 for a knife. I'll probably never own a custom knife because of this.

Sooner State knives and Cumberland Knife Works have been selling the Wildcat Driller for $72.50 and $74.00 respectively, I know if you go directly to CSC they migh be a little more expensive, probably they could make somthething work below $100.00. maybe!

I don't mind seeing if I can get a quote out of CSC, just so we know!

I prefer 1095 to the stainless used by Canal Street, but You may be onto something.

Actually if we go to Canal Street with an order for 40 or 50 they should run less than the street prices. (It worked that way for the ring opener).

Personally, IMHO a peanut is the very essence of traditional slippies. I would be all over it.

I am new to this as well. Mostly I just like to read and learn as you can tell by my post numbers. However a peanut or baby doc knife (with spatula or two blades) would be right up my alley.

A sunfish would be okay, not really my cup of tea, but I am open to whatever.

That said, the Peanut or Wharnie sounds cool!

My vote goes to a Schatt & Morgan 3 3/8" Barlow with a long pull with a swedged clip blade in ATS-34 with a ATS-34 pen in the back. Ebony scales, sans shield. I think this would come in well under $ 100.00

As a fan of candy stripe I must say a sunfish done in celluloid would be mighty purty as well...

Personally, I'm not a fan of the sunfish pattern, just never have gotten into them. Also, the 2008 knife was a pretty small knife, I'd prefer something a little bigger, so while I like the peanuts fine, I'd vote no there too. I like most of the other suggestions a little more or less depending. I guess, my preference would be for almost anything we decide on to be at least in the 3.75 range, or a bit bigger.
I liked the idea of the GEC larger single blades alot. The dual blade swayback is a good one too, heck I liked that Case warny alot, real sharp looking knife. And my first vote last year was for a whittler, so I'll throw that out there again, a nice serpentine or swayback, preferably thinner blade profiles, and in a 3.75 to 4.25 size. Just my druthers.
In whatever we decide, I definetly prefer carbon blades, 1095 is classic and a good user, I'd also go for the D2, stuff keeps an edge like mad. In handles, I'd like to stick with natural materials like most of the folks here, but I'd be good with bone, stag, even wood depending. I also really like the idea of a more unique bone color, like someone suggested. Really not a fan of the yellow handles, etc.
Of course I'll probably end up buying almost whatever we come up with, heh :D

Couldn't agree more.

A Jack of any kind would be nice. I like the swayback idea a lot, as well as the wharncliffe suggestion. The only thing I feel strongly about is not another tiny knife. 2008 was bordering on disappointingly small for a stockman (imo - and that's not to diminish the fantastic work by Ed!).

I wish I was in a position to be able to supply this number of knives but as Gus says, not enough "bandwidth".

I like the idea of a 3 5/8 single blade swayback with Wharnie. . To keep the costs down, how about Jigged Micarta? I would be happy to supply a few examples to Queen or whomever. I also like the idea of a shield unique to 2009 BF knife.

Gus,

Thanks for thinking of taking this project on:thumbup:

I'd like to get on board with the forum knife this year- I missed out on the '08 knife and I regret it. I'd be happy to see the '09 forum knife come from GEC.

I like the idea of a slightly larger swayback jack (than the Case pattern) with a wharncliffe blade- I'd love to see GEC make something like that- especially if they took it easy with the springs. I'm tired of the overly heavy backsprings on some of my GECs.

My thoughts on the 09 forum knife are to keep it simple but unique. Maybe a single blade jack or a shadow swayback in antique ivory micarta. The stag sunfish does sound nice though. :) I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever we come up. The 07 and 08 knives have been great.

Now that's the kind of custom maker/production company-collaboration I'm talking about! WooHoo!!!

I would do a wharncliffe jack also. That is something I would carry
