2011 Arkansas Custom Knife Show - Pictorial Review

Roger,

I've got to say that small fighter of Roger Massey was quite a knife a collector from up here in Nebraska purchased that one. Believe it or not I got to hold it at eleven pm on Saturday night. He showed up at the plant that I work at bragging about what he got.

Thanks for the review.

Wow, talk about an embarrassment of riches... what an incredible selection of knives! Thanks so much for the tour Roger, its a real treat for those of us unable to attend. BTW I dont know how you were able to restrain yourself with that John White stag fighter. I doubt I could have! What an incredible piece...

Great review and images Roger. Only one thing missing. What the heck did you get? I know I'll have to wait to see when they arrive. Looking forward to that day for sure.

Great review and pictures. This was my first time at the show but I definitly plan on going back. It was great meeting so many of the makers that I've been admiring their work for years. The Arkansas Knifemakers Association did a great job of putting on a show. Thanks.
Joel

Congratulations on the Best Folder Joel.

Thank you Roger, I am enjoying this thread and the pictures of many friends and their work.

Thanks again to all for your comments. My only regret is that I didn't have a full day Sunday - that's usually the best chance to hang and chat with people - particularly when the Saturday crowd was as healthy as it was this year.

I'd love to hear how this year stacked up to last in terms of attendance and sales - my perception is that attendance was up Saturday versus Saturday.

Dave - small world that you got to see that Massey so quickly - I'm glad your friend was pleased with it. Hard to imagine it would be otherwise. I need to have Roger make me one.

Joel - congrats on the Best Folder award. I'm sorry we didn't get to meet. I did stop by your table, though and looked over your terrific fodlers - as well as some REALLY nice little straight knives. I asked and got permission from the lovely lady at your table to take a pic, but regrettably, it was one that came out too blurred to use - probably jostled by someone in the thick mid-Saturday crowd.

Alferd - good spot on that up-sized Sendero.

Murray - I got two and a half knives at the show - and you can count on show-and-tell when they have made their way home.

1) This big Hanson:

Here's a 12.5" blade with stag. I'm fairly certain that my knives look better than my photos. :o

2) A way cool Nick Wheeler clip point hunter / small fighter that was donated by the owner as an auction knife. I figure I had NO chance, as this was a silent auction that concluded 3:00pm Sunday when I was long gone. I thought for sure I would be outbid - so my thanks to all of you, known and unknown, who could have dropped a higher bid on me, but didn't. And a real BIG thanks to the owner who donated it - that was a very generous gesture. I'd love to hear who got the sweet John White damascus piece that was also on the auction table. I need to get hold of Nick and see if he has a pic of it, because it escaped both my camera and my pretty extensive Wheeler photo archive.

3) The "1/2" knife is one of those "check under the table" pieces. Michael Ruth Jr. had a terrific damascus bowie blade completed, but didn't get the handle done in time for the show. Which proved fortuitous in many respects. It's a long - 11" or so - slim blade similar in proile to the Ruthless models shown, but in West Texas Wind pattern and with a nice long clip. Michael had a piece of ivory set aside for the knife, but I asked him to finish it with the piece I picked out at the show. This should be a personal record for shortest gap between buying handle material and seeing it on a completed knife.

What a great thread Roger. The only thing better was being there. It was good seeing you there and getting together with everyone again. What a fantastic show it was!

Roger, you suck for getting that Wheeler hunter! ;)

(as if you didn't already suck for the Hanson) :D

Thank you for posting the review.

They are all great makers but my favourite has to be Kyle Royer.

Great review, photos, and knives! Thanks Roger, this was a fun thread!

Gus, thanks, it was quite an honor winning an award when in such good company.

Rodger, sorry I missed you, hopefully we can meet at another time. Thanks again for starting this thread.

Roger, thanks for taking the time to share the review and pictures. I know it must have taken some time to do, and I know a lot of us appreciate it.

Here's one of the really cool knives from the show - a collaboration piece between ABS Master Smiths Jerry Fisk, J.R. Cook and Mike Williams. I'll let the happy new owner - or own Buddy Thomason - tell the story:

"The collaboration bowie was a real happy surprise because I go back over five years with these guys, back to the days of the wild and wooly ABS cuttin’ contests, before fear set in. So it was natural for me to photograph the 2011 collaboration knife with the autographed toilet plunger Mike and Jerry gave me in 2004.

Truth is, I have really gotten pumped about having this knife. I mean, look at it. It’s bad man, it’s intimidating. Back in the mid 1800s, if I’d lived then in America I would’ve wanted a “Bowie knife” just like this one. It’s perfect – to me it’s perfect. I haven’t had serious good luck like that for a long time."

As it happened, I was standing beside Buddy in the hotel lobby when Mike Williams walked up to give him the good news - and the knife. Buddy was smiling like a 5 year old kid that just found a shiny new bike under the Christmas tree. Very cool knife. Most excellent pic. Congrats again my friend!

I have no idea how I managed to miss this thread for this long!!!

Great coverage, man! There's lots of tantalizing stuff displayed here... makes me think I should be looking for a good piece of stag!!!

Some post-Little Rock leather from Paul Long. Oh - and I highly recommend his sheath videos to anyone wanting to learn or, like me, just wanting a deeper appreciation for what goes into them.
