2011 SHOT Show: Spyderco with Sal Glesser

I always sub to Nutn right before the Shot show, and end my subscription soon after. Always like watching the interviews with Sal, Like watching anyone as knowledgeable talk. (yet to own a spyderco though)

I agree.

Sal Glesser is a Legend and should have been treated as such and with respect.

When Legends speak we should listen and not talk.....

If Sal is such a great person everyone thinks he is, I'm sure he can suffer through a conversation without feeling offended. ;)

Great presentation from Sal and very excited about the Superleaf. Nutn as always very thorough with his coverage. Thanks to both for putting it out there.

Jankerson , I know u r a bit of a knife gur even though we disagree bout edge retention of zdp and m390 and wich is better but what tool steel would u compare s90 to in toughness

It all really depends on HT and Tempering as with any steel, it's give and take as in to gain one thing you give up another or can balance it out.

Most of the High Carbide steels won't be as tough as steels like S30V, but we give up some toughness for edge retention, but that's not to say steels like S90V are brittle because they aren't.

There are some things that need to be found out by people on their own and their own use by how they use their knives.

Some would be suprised by the results with good HT and Tempering.

As far as ZDP vs M390 I have a M390 blade sitting here before me that no ZDP blade will ever touch as far as edge retention goes ever..... M390 is also one heck of a lot tougher than ZDP is from my experience with both steels.

ZDP just doesn't have the hard carbide content to last as long as M390 given both steels having a good HT and tempering process. The Chromium carbides just aren't strong or hard enough.

M390 is a very complicated steel in the way the carbides are developed and it has a very high carbide content.

He was there with the legend himself and was, IMO anyway, being rude with him. Kind of like nutn was a bigger deal than Sal. Idk, maybe it is just me. Cool knives though. Sal seems like a great guy too. Thanks for the link.

Like I said, Sal has better people skills than I do.
If I'd had been in Sal's shoes the situation would have ended with two pissed off people.
I never was a good diplomat.

I never picked up on that in the least. Sal did most of the talking and the job of a good reporter is to ask questions, stimulate the interview, keep the information flowing etc. I think it was really a super interview. YMMV :)

Wich blade in m390 are u talking bout production or a custom id very much be interested in purchasing one

It's a custom blade by Phil Wilson, M390 at 62 HRC.

But then I haven't seen any production blades in M390 bested by ZDP either and the ZDP blades tested were at high hardness, 65+ HRC.

Again HT and tempering is extremely important.

Oh don't want to hijack thread so this will be my last post . I work at a plant nursery most work with knife wich is out of my pocket in a day more then in is used for mostly twine one ply to five and lots of burlap my zdp stretch and manix xhp both greatly outpreform my mpr bye a landslide , someone did point out prob. Cause of thickness of mpr though

There could be a number of issues, it could be softer than it should be also. ;)

If ZDP and XHP out perform it there is something wrong....

Ok so do u think I should try another design from the same maker maybe I got a lemon

That's possible you did.

You could try another or wait until another or Spyderco comes out with one in M390 if they choose too in the future.

Like I stated before M390 is a very complicated steel to HT and Temper, to get it right it takes a very good HT from one who really knows that steel and has a furnace that can handle the requirements.

Just looking at the pictures I wasn't too excited, but after seeing it in hand and on video, this looks awesome, I really want one. Hopefully it comes out this year right after the Tuff:D

Are you referring to when he half complained about the price of the fluted Ti, or what?

I will say NF does make some good videos, they are well thought out and that's the reason I subscribe to him.

I do like his outdoor videos a lot though as he gets around quite a bit.

 Agree 100%
