2012 Bladeforums Knife - Chatting Thread

I'm sensing some disharmony among the crew re the polling process.
I found it complicated.
I believe that the task in front of the committeee is far from easy.
I do not envy them one bit in this regard.
I thank them most sincerely for the time & energy they have ploughed into this unique project and unique it will be.

Bastid made the point that it's a club knife. To me that means if you're in the club ya get one .
It's a fraternal thing.I'm not about to go trapping because of this knife.
For me its the sense of belonging to a society of likeminded individuals.
Although most of us will never clap eyes on each other we are linked
together across the oceans, mountains ,deserts and cities by this internet thing and our love of knifey stuff.
I'd made my mind up that I was getting one even before it started.
Even if it turned out as the dreaded purple ramshorn acrylic six blade peanut.
Understandably there are many reasons why some vote for a particular knife only to be disappointed and drop out of purchasing.
I don't see anything wrong with that after all isn't that why we have a vote?
On a negative note I feel that too many options were offered at the outset.
This lead to an overabundance of configurations and I'm still not sure how we ended up with the option that has been decided upon.
That matters little.

As we know 20 people will choose 20 different things if they are offered.
Majority rules and it was easy to see the most popular choices manifesting themselves early in the polling.

The committee have my support in making the executive decisions(rank has its priveleges).
If some detail is decided upon by them thats suits their taste slighly better than mine so be it.
You deserve that small privelege.

It's not over yet.
best regards to one and all

Good post Meako. I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll echo it here. This process is supposed to be fun...enjoy it! Use it to learn about patterns and develop friendships on this forum. It's only a knife. And remember that the folks on the committee have never done this before, and they are doing this in their free-time because they love knives. It's not an easy task and it takes A LOT OF TIME. Whatever the final knife is, it will be a good quality knife and a joy to use. I understand that this is a "chatting" thread and everybody is free to offer their input and comments...whether positive or negative. But enjoy the process and help make it run smoothly. After all......it's just a knife and I'm buying some regardless of what's chosen.

I'm disappointed that none of these made the polls.

-I want a 7 bladed sowbelly, all D2, with no blade rub, and mammoth ivory grips, but under $50 or I ain't buying it. I am firm on that!

-I want a crazy color, like violet. And I want glitter on it.

-I don't like that company that we used last year. You know, the one with all the experience of making great knives at a fair price. Forget them!

-I want a knife over 5" closed. A knife that is useable! I'm a buffalo skinner by trade.

-I want a knife under 2" closed. A knife that is pocketable and doesn't scare the other librarians.

-Let's make a pattern we've already done before, like a stockman. And lets do a handle material we've done before. Like stag. I hate variety.

-I'm going to post 47 times in the "let's pick a pattern" OP, then pout 47 times more when they choose my favorite pattern, but without a lanyard shackle. Liberals!

-Whatever knife we pick, it NEEDS to come with a Grey Poupon mustard patina on the blade and backspring or I'm out.

-Marlin spike! Marlin spike!

(...I feel much better now...;))

Those who are unhappy with the abbreviated selection process should remember that this got a late start this year because we had to figure out how to do this a new way. There almost was no forum knife for 2012.

Thanks Frank, Gary and the 2012 crew for making this one happen.

Looks like micarta and 1095 are leading in the polls. Not many people specified the type of micarta... linen... paper, etc. What do you guys think would look good. I'm partial to green linen... I think I saw that on one of Reese's knives.

its going to be micarta whether we like it or not-what sort of green though?
i like British Racing Green for that manly distinguished classy no nonsense look.
micarta is like fibreglass isn't it?

I'm still hoping jigged bone wins but I think micarta is a good choice also.

meako, I can't find the photo that I was thinking about (it was a wharncliffe trapper) but here's a photo with the color green.

my first one. swayback jack

There are some nice examples of micarta in this thread:

Here's an example of GEC's black paper micarta. It looks sorta like delrin.

Trand:

Is that a Great Eastern #73 Scout with 440C blades and Black Micarta scales? Man, did I ever miss the boat on that one. That is one sweet looking knife. Thanks for showing it.

I want to thank the Knife team for the way they are running the job

Taking initative and deciding on what to vote on
Running the votes for a focused time
And coming out with a clear consensus

And I understand we are under a time constaint

Thanks

I am always amazed how every year there are those who refuse to buy because their choice was not made. Then when the knives are released/shipped they have regrets because they see how nice and unique they are.

Jeez it's a fun project that is supposed to bring as all together to discuss and honor the process. In many knife clubs the annual knife is chosen by the committee without the members even getting a look in. Usually it's a standard factory model with a little etching on the blade.

Here we actually get to participate and vote in the ongoing process and enjoy the discussion and selection of the knife. So what if it is exactly not your choice......
It will be a unique item with the input of some superb people. Enjoy it for what it is...........

None of the previous four knives were exactly what I wanted but so what? They are a representation of our unique little community and I love them.

Thanks again to everyone who has made, and is making the forum knife project a reality.

I am in as I have said at the very beginning.
I find myself typing this a lot sooner than what I wanted, because this decision is so important to me, but reading earlier posts...this knife is meant to be a collateral decision, and I agree, we are a very strong Traditional group.
When I first thought of this knife I thought NO WAY!!..it has to be a Traditional scale material
...We are Traditional..it should be Traditional material etc...Rams Horn, Stag etc...but I agree with what everyone is saying, that the task at hand for our Traditional committee is extremely hard, I will buy whatever we come up with, the road down to 2012 Forum knife will be an interesting one, this alone is educating, with putting aside personal preferences, and experimenting with the most popular outcome( voted ) knife.
Bring on the 2012 Forum knife!!

Even though I'm a noob to the forum it's my favorite (outside of a certain watch forum where I'm a mod...), and not new to collecting knives even though I only knew Case and Buck before I arrived here. I've voted in the polls because I love the idea of a Club knife. There have been a few "forum watches" over where I usually am, and a custom watch costs a heck of a lot more than a knife! And the choosing process can be and has been far more contentions than I've seen here, these threads are downright polite. And that's why I love this forum and keep coming back.

Unless the forum knife is hot pink, I'm going to pick one up. I was only able to afford one forum watch because it was Russian, the Swiss made ones topped out in the 1K area, way more than my "affordable" nature would let me spend, even if I could.

That's what I love about traditionals, I can buy better made production knives for way less than I can a watch

I must say I like that green micarta Jake. Its got chararcter.
The black stuff is just sort of non descript black stuff .I have a black micarta templar. Its a top little knife but the micarta is bland & boring.
No doubt its sturdy material.
For a forum knife we should get something that speaks of understated quality. Something that people will say "heeey where dja get that from?"

I too would like to thank the committee for all the effort they are putting in to this. It looks like a lot of work is being done concurrently and that's not an easy thing to do when being democratic.

I think that if we go with micarta, then we should use linen or canvas. The paper micarta can look good but it doesn't have much character. With linen, you at least get some light lines which I think would look great if we're getting ivory micarta. Below are two of mine with linen, black and green of course. I don't have a white one for comparison though.

This is going to be my first BF knife, and I'm glad to say that the whole process has made me feel like I'm actually part of it. Maybe to "older" members this feels more normal, but to me it feels new, and great, and I thank BF and the committee for this; it doesn't take much to understand how much work and effort they put in this.
So far, I "won" two polls and "lost" two, yet I assume I will be buying the knife that comes out of this process.
As Gus pointed out, it's good to see it as a "club" knife, a sign of belonging to this great subforum.
I don't buy many knives and I wouldn't have bought a 4,5" stockman only because I know I would have never carried one, and if I can't carry a knife, then there's no reason why I should own it; that's why I'm happy that, unless unpredicted revolutions, the 2012 WT will be a knife that I can carry, cause it's been great to take part in this and I'll enjoy carrying the "fruit" of all the discussions, polls and so on.
As a sidenote, I'd like to thank Fester for his incredibly generous offer: I'm not a stag fan, but your offer is simply awesome.
As a second sidenote, I agree on canvas or linen micarta. Green is more than fine, and ivory would look great too.

Ditto.

I would have voted stag but without being able to hand pick my own knife I didn't want to chance it. It can have so much variety.

I am with Trand and Jake. Paper micarta is nothing special in my opinion. It lacks any real grip too. Linen is to me the best in between. It has somewhat fine grain, character and a soft feel with tons of grip.

Not the best picture but you can see some of the grain in the ivory micarta below.

I hope nobody considers my posts Griping, or Negative. I truly do believe the process is working as intended. (BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE)

I AM having fun, and will purchase the knife chosen. I do understand the need for speed, and how that translates in to polls starting every or every other day. When it comes down to it, this will be remembered as the quickest and most efficient Forum Knife Choosing Process to date.:D

I, in no way, want to take away from the hard work that folks are doing to move this along, and hope it doesn't come across that way. I volunteered to help out, as well, and have sympathy for newcomers doing a new thing.

Am I a little sad that we're never going to see a 7-bladed (with cap-lifter) sow-belly with purple glitter acrylic at 5.5" closed, with a bail? Maybe, a little. ;)

Am I enjoying this forum, it's people, and the opportunities to learn and grow? Definitely!
