2012 Bladeforums Knife - Chatting Thread

I'm under the impression that some people think they are votin' on an actual finished knife, hell we haven't settled on a pattern, much less the blade configuration or scale material.

Havin' said that, Congress Jack in Winterbottom Bone.

Sometime we do suffer from a bout of "Ready, Fire, Aim" when there's an opportunity to get a knife whether it be the forum knife, a giveaway, or something else. It behooves us all to read twice and post once. :)

I'm wondering about the 2012 forum knife, and I don't want to hijack the vote/poll thread, so I guess this is the place to write.
So far, the wharncliffe trapper has been chosen as the pattern, and, unless major and unexpected changes in the actual trend, it will be a two bladed knife. I'm not the one who's in charge of keeping the record, but it seems that the clip/wharncliffe (or muskrat/wharncliffe) combo is the most wanted one...which would be cool indeed.
I'm just curious to know if I'm the only one considering some change on the pattern (after all, it's a great chance to "customize" a knife, even if we're 200 and not just one), to spice it a bit. Don't misunderstand me, I love the "standard" WT, but it's not too rare to find, while some alterations of the pattern would make it more unique. To me, making one of the two blades shorter than the other would be cool and add something to it but hey...as the elders say here, "chentu concas, chentu berrittas" ("a hundred heads, a hundred berets") :D

Nope, you're not the only one Fausto! I too would like to see one blade shorter than the other. :D

Folks, we are short on time this year. Whatever we are to choose, we must choose quickly. Please keep that in mind.

The vote in the poll thread is dang near a blow out for a two blade Trapper. I think by tradition a two blade trapper has blades of equal length just like the one pictured by Charlie.

If you want something else then start a new poll about the blade lenght of the two blades on the 2012 Forum and then start another poll on what we're going to call it. But then again as Frank said; "we're short on time".

I thought we had the handle already picked out. :p

-I want a crazy color, like violet. And I want glitter on it.

I'd suggest linen micarta or bone. Stag is too variable and expensive. If we go with GEC as the maker, stag would put us over $100. I suggested Micarta since Tony & Reese use Micarta on some of their Wharncliffe trappers and Tony came up with the pattern. Also, the GEC peach seed bone would look good... As would Schatt & Morgan's Pennsylvania Brown Berry Worn Worm Groove bone.

I'd go with jigged bone or micarta too. I like stag and while past #48 Trappers in Northfield trim were at the $100 mark, there's no guarantees it will be the case this time. I won't be opposed to stag though if its within our target cost.

I'll reply here about the lengths of blades since the poll thread appears to be locked... I think that if we want the nail nicks to be accessible on the mark side then we need equal length blades (assuming clip then wc config). If the wc is shorter then the tip will be exposed. If the nail nick will be on the pile side then having a slightly shorter wc works fine for me as the spines of the blades can be kept at the same level. I'm not too keen on the idea of a full length wc and a shorter clip.

I'm just a little worried that the final choices are not being chosen by those of us who will actually be buying the knife. Last year we had folks checking that only those who had committed to purchase were doing the choosing of options.

I know we're pressed for time, but are you all okay with "Majority Rules" coming from folks who won't necessarily be purchasing the knife?

For me, it's a non-issue, as far as what we end up with, as I've been lucky to have most of my choices in the polls and usually the option chosen was either 1st or 2nd, so I'm happy with how things are going.

It's just something I'm concerned with, as those who end up buying may have not actually ended up having their voices really heard. I hope I'm not coming off as a snob, or whiner, and I'm sure that this is not necessarily that important to all. Just seeing if you all are okay with this.

Flame away...

I must confess that i am worried about this.
I am unemployed and if that doesnt change soon, i wont be ordering anything
then again, i had an interview set up for today and kinda starting voting, perhaps i was premature (hopefully i will get offered the job, but i am not confident :/)

i certainly hope i am not skewing (or helping to skew) votes on a knife i may not even be able to order
just getting this off my chest :(

No flame necessary imo, I think its a valid concern but I'm not sure how to verify.

I kinda felt that way -- only vote on options if you intend to buy a knife -- but this is for the 2012 Blade Forum Knife (primarily the Traditional Forum) and everyone in the forum should be able to vote in the polls. When the final knife pattern and makeup of that knife are chosen, those that like it can buy it -- those that don't shouldn't have to buy it and probably won't.

But do you want it to have two equal length blades???? :p :D :)

I'm very new, and somewhat confused (one condition should hopefully be remedied with the passage of time, the other condition, well, here's hoping).

Could someone please describe, or point me to, the philosophy (or mission statement, or commonly understood Fun) of the annual Forum knife?

Because after all the polls and discussion, it looks to my (new, confused) eyes that consensus has aimed directly for a rather straightforward, often available production knife. Or am I wrong about this?

How is the Forum knife going to distinguish itself from something like the currently available Bear & Sons rendition (Model: CH6054W, $99 msrp), for example? In materials and/or quality [which I'm all for]? Size [ditto]?

Is the goal a poor man's Bose or Menefee (which is a worthy goal, to a point)?

And if so, that's grand.

It's just not what I expected. I guess I envisioned something unique, or different-er, or... something. Am I wrong in thinking that past year's efforts had a blade combination and/or other feature that set them apart from other knives?

Thanks for any clarification!

~ P.
