There is a little more to the forum knives than a lot of people know.
One it is a lot of work for the volunteers. (And this thread will make their job even harder).
Two, as a mod, I had to guarantee the forum owner that if something happened cash wise (meaning funds vanishing), I would personally be responsible for refunds to the ordering members.
Lets give the new mods a chance to settle in, decide if they want to continue the effort and take the responsibility and allow them time to pick the folks who will be heading the effort.
Howdy,
There has been much anticipation for the 2012 knife project. The first thread about the 2012 knife was in December of 2011. The quote above is from it. In answer to the question Gus posed, neither Gary nor I is in a position to take the financial responsibility that Gus took in the past. But, we both know that this is a fun project that everyone looks forward to. So, how do we do this? Gary and I presented the issues to the owner of BladeForums, Kevin Jon Schlossberg. What follows is what we have worked out with Kevin as a way forward.
Kevin said that we could funnel the project through him. A committee would decide what you wanted for a forum knife: which design, which manufacturer, etc. Then the committee tells Kevin. (I am assuming the committee would work a bit with Kevin on this.) Members would place an order with him with a non-refundable deposit. Once the order period closed, he would place the order with the manufacturer. When the knives came, we would buy them from him. As the owner of a knife store, Kevin has the setup to take orders. He has the setup to track them. He has the system needed to control the money. And he knows how to ship products. This infrastructure greatly reduces the risk of problems.
A couple of details: An absolute price won't be announced at the outset, but we will try to have a not-to-exceed price. Obviously the final price will depend on what Kevin can work out with the manufacturer as well as on how many are bought. He has promised to keep the cost as low as possible.
We realize this is not how the last few forum knives have been done, but times change, the knife project has gotten larger and more complex each year, and with the changing of the moderating guard, this seems to be the best option for a 2012 knife.
We are open to comments on this. We would also like to hear from those who would like to volunteer for the selection committee. This will still be a lot of work for the committee members, and hopefully, still a lot of fun.

Howdy,
Gary and I gleaned the thread and collected questions, which we have forwarded to Spark:
- Would you be able to take Paypal on this project?
- Are you good with taking orders from members who reside outside the US? (maybe about a dozen of them, scattered around the world.)
- In the past, foreign members have had knives shipped Priority Mail International small flat rate box" and have found that to be very reliable. Would you be willing to use that shipping method for them?
- Several of the past Forum knives have been unique non-standard models, not made for anyone else. Past committees have worked with the manufacturers to determine the feasibility of making the requested knife. Do you want to take that on this year, or would you want the committee to do that?
- The past Forum knife committees have had a BF stamp made. We would like that used in making the knife. (Not a question. Just a heads up so you don't get surprised later.)
Several folks were kind enough to offered their services for the 2012 knife committee. Gary and I have asked Wintermute and Knife Crazied to organize the quest to identify the 2012 Forum Knife. We thank them already. Waynorth has offered to be a senior councilor to them and we very much thank him also.
So, Off we go folks. Let the fun begin!
Answers from Spark:
- Yes, payment can be made through paypal
- Yes, I should be able to do priority international but I'll have to see the rates on it.
- Non standard models are fine, that's not a problem. If the committee wants to do it, great, or I can do it. The big thing is that the members need to hurry up and decide on a design
- If the stamp is still viable for use, I don't see why that'd be a problem, right? It just gets sent to the manufacturer, right?
