2012 HTM Forum Gunhammer: Blade markings -- *INPUT NEEDED*

Dunno why it was changed, but I can speculate. The old one just seemed like an engraving and not much of a logo. The new HTM is actually a logo.

I agree. No offense because I like the subtlety of the engraving but the font looks like something you would have 'Things Remembered' do for you.

Truth be told, I never cared about blade markings. Feel free to send any of those new Gun Hammers with the distasteful markings on them to me for proper disposal :)

I really like scurvy's suggestion. I think that looks very tasteful, and subtle. Its got that enthusiast touch. Just a bit different for keen eyes to wonder what's going on with it, and also, and most importantly, very pretty and clean looking.

You could always have the blades marked in an area that is not visible when the blade is fully open. I think you can put a marking closer to the pivot area that you can only see if the blade is partially opened.

Good call, Hark! That's a cool idea for the markings for the blade steel and maybe the serial number.

I always thought blades marked on the spine were neat looking. Maybe put DDR on the presentation side, the steel on the other and the serial number and HTM on the spine?

Thanks!

That's exactly what I was going for.

Agreed 100%. This gets my vote.

I'm on board for Scurvy's suggestion too. It has all the relevant stuff (DDR and HTM logos, serial numbers, and blade steel) while being unobtrusive, symmetrical, and subtly unique.

It wasn't the font or anything that particularly grabbed my attention...it was the fact that it can barely be seen that I was going for. I just don't like the "painted on" look of the new logo. It just looks cheap. Find another way to apply it and I think it'll look 100% better. One of the reasons I like CRK knives...the blades are sterile. Ultimately I would really like the same style/look on the GH2.

Sweet. Sounds like I should have been a knife graphic placer haha.

I'm still stuck on the tuxedo (that's what I'm calling it) layout I described in the other thread. DLC blade with white markings, white handle with black hardware.

Not a bad ideal at all. The more sterile the better in my opinion. Nothin big, close to the tang/handle. Maybe instead of horizontal writing have the "DDR" written vertically in between the tang and the stud.

Serial number on the spine sounds awesome to me. '1 of 25' or whatever.

Minimal other markings, I like the idea of text (perhaps the blade steel) that is only visible when the knife is partially open.

I would actually like, in this order, DDR S90V HTM on the spine with X/X numbered on the presentation side and Maxx Glide on the other side. And the spine markings would go from the tip with DDR to the stud with HTM and S90V in the middle. Spine markings sound very cool. That is a very cool idea to who ever threw that one out there.

My vote is now for spine markings, and I would love to see the steel on the spine for sure.

This knife is gonna be very unique. How cool is it that we get to design this puppy from the ground up, and I don't just mean steel and color handle. We get to pick one of two blade shapes, bearings or assisted, color, steel, and blade markings. This is my grail knife. I own/have owned some cool knives (IMHO), but this just gets my blood pumping.

Dunno if he can do spine markings. Just putting that out there. I'm not sure if his machines are equipped to do that. It's much easier to lay a blade on the flat side and mark it. If his machines can secure a blade by the spine, he can prob do it. I dunno though.

Agreed.

The only people who really understand forum-exclusives and special markings are enthusiasts like us who spend enough time around knives to notice the differences. And while eye-catching flashiness has always been a Darrel Ralph hallmark, it has always been a refined kind of flashiness.

A finely-suited man driving a Maybach rather than a clown with a spinning bowtie in a monster truck.

I might be in the minority in this, but I'd prefer the markings be on the sides of the blade rather than the spine. I know that spine markings would be another unique touch on what's already shaping up to be a unique knife, but in this case, sort of echoing what TheBleedingEdge said above, it seems like it would look very cluttered and would border on uniqueness simply for its own sake. As we were discussing earlier in the thread, there's much to be said for subtlety and tastefulness when it comes to blade markings, and seeing a bunch of text every time I look down at the spine of the knife while cutting with it doesn't really appeal to me. Additionally, like Hark said, it may not even be feasible from a technical standpoint, and at a minimum is likely to make things more difficult for Darrel.

There's plenty of cool stuff we can do with logo/steel/serial number marking placement while just using the sides of the blade as our canvas. Scurvy's suggestion/mock-up from earlier in the thread still gets my vote.

As I mentioned in another reply, if it were me getting a blade, I'd want him to mark them closer to the pivot so it's only visible when the knife is partially opened. When fully opened, you see nothing.
