2012 KITH Photo Thread

Here is my entry for the 2012 KITH. It's a good think I started early since i got the flu last week and was out of commission for 6 days. This small fighter is 3/16" 1084 from Aldo, 316 stainless "guard" with 1/8" black G10 spacer. OAL is 12" and the blade is 6 1/4" tip to guard; clip is not sharpened. Blade was clay coated, heated in a propane forge, quenched in canola oil, triple tempered and sand saned to 2000 grit before etching in ferric chloride. Handle is stabilized spalted sycamore from Mark at BurlSource. On to the pics:

Sheath is about as fancy as I can do. 8-9 oz leather dyed two-tone, with top secret texture (okay, okay, i did it with a brick)

Thanks for looking.

Note: Stainless Ruger Vaquero is NOT part of the give-a-way and shown for context only.

Randy,

I LOVE that knife in every possible way. You nailed the sheath too. Way to go man.

Brian

Good golly Miss Molly!!

I gotta' have that knife.
Stacy can I bribe you? What'll it be... a big bag of cash, a fast car and a faster woman, chocolate cake? Work with me here. :p:p

I think I'd better go toss sumpin' t'gether, eh?

-Peter

I don't know??
Let me think....why did I used to like folks to send a fast woman over.....nope, I got nothing.
I get gas when I eat chocolate cake.
I drive like an old man, so a fast car would be worthless.
Bag 'o cash....Hmmmm..... naw, I'd just end up sending it all to Aldo.

Maybe your best bet is to make a knife.

On second thought, the gal sounds interesting. If she drives over in the fast car and brings the cake and bag of cash.....well, I might consider it.

BigBlue, I was gonna say skip the middleman and bribe me. :) but Stacy's right; Hot women and fast cars are nothing but trouble in the long run.

thanks for the comments, BTW.

ETA:In the pics, i don't know what that white speck on the sheath near the bottom was, but it is gone now.

but which brick? THAT is the secret!
Lovely knife, I'm really glad I clicked on page 3.

I'm sorry I couldn't participate this year - too backed up with everything.

HO, HO, HO..... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I hope someone out there's been a good little boy or girl.

Here's my submission for this here shindig.

:eek::eek: (I wish I was skilled enough to add the soundeffect of my jaw hitting the floor).

Thats simply an outstanding entry Peter. Blade, handle, see-through guard and sheath.

I´ve been a very, very good boy this year:D

Brian

wow, that's nice. One day I'm gonnal learn how to do nice clean lines on the angled faces of the guard like that, one day. You nailed it, Peter. and that cocobolo is awesome.

Well, I have a couple of knives finished before I went away and I thought about joining in, however after seeing the blades put up recently, I no longer feel qualified. lol Oh well. Nice work all.

Here's my entry.
Since there's a good chance that my knife will end up across the ocean I decided to make it a European synergy.
A 3 3/4" blade. Small enough to use the point for fine work, large enough to make decent cuts.

The steel is Niolox, a modern German stainless known for strenght and the ability to take a very fine edge. (0,7% Nb)
(niolox = SB1 = 1.4153.03 = 0,8% C, 12,7% Cr, 1,1% Mo, 0,9% V, 0,7% Nb)
The handle is Italian olivewood that I've taken home as a souvenir a few years ago.
The white spacer is Finnish moose crown and she has a bronze guard with three brass spacers.
Flats and spine are sanded to P1200 and the bevels to P600.

The sheeth she wears holds her very tightly. It's vegetable tanned leather covered with chrome tanned leather.

I hope it will make somebody happy :)

Here is my KITH entry:

Bill Moran inspired Mouse Hawk
Hand forged small hawk made in wrought iron and 1095. Curly maple handle with silver inlay. The "berries" on the vines are 14K gold. The poll is marked "S.E.APELT" and the handle has my initials inlaid in 14 karat gold.
The wrought iron and 1095 were given to me by Bill Moran. The curly maple came from his shop, too. The inlay pattern is one he showed me how to do.

OAL - 10.5"
Poll - 3.25" by 2.75"
Fully hardened edge that is shaving sharp.
It will come in a zipper case.

Big Blue, that whole package is amazing!! Everything about it just flows and and all the details just compliment themselves.

Well i hate to withdraw but i have no choice. While trying to make my handle a little more streamlined, i ground into a weight reducing hole. At first i thought it was just some epoxy so i ground a little more and the void grew and i realized what happened and was just sick. I guess this is my punishment for waiting to put the finishing touches on my kith knife. When i see the awesome entries this year, it makes it worse. Good luck to all the entrants!
