So, after another busy week of polling, it looks like we have our basic design down: congress jack with carbon blades and synthetic covers. Dave and I have to talk to a few people about some things this week before we go further. While we're doing that, we would like to encourage everyone to use this thread to talk about the details you would like to see - bolster work, liners, swedges, shield, covers, etc. Thanks again to everyone for all the ideas and enthusiasm!

For reference:

What a great choice! I think some bolster work would look really good like on GEC's Northfields, and maybe without a shield to keep it simple. Stainless liners might be the way to go as well. I definitely like swedges, so I'm all for that.

I guess I would have no problems with the configuration. My preference for synthetic materials is Ivory colored paper micarta or an Ivory substitute of some kind. I think that on a Congress frame that would look classic and in some ways be similar to Lincolns knife if only in frame shape.

My feeling is that some of the different types of micarta belong only on survival or "Tacticool" knives. Of which I have a number and prefer not to have on my traditionals. Just my input.

As for covers, I would like to see an antique Ivory micarta or butterscotch as first choice, maroon micarta or something similar as a distant second. No real preference on the bolsters though squared would look better with the style this seems to be shaping up to. Either no shield or a federal shield for me. Considering these should be full length blades (on one anyway) I think the swedge would be a good choice as well.

I like the idea of the stainless liners and pins.

Personally I think some type of bar shield is the way to go on this pattern. I don't think this knife will have a very tall profile. N/S for the liners is a step up in class IMO, but maybe with the carbon steel blades and light colored covers brass would look good?? I wouldn't mind rat tail bolsters. Swedges will depend on blade placement for me. I would like to see the pen in front of the sheepsfoot with nicks facing the mark side. I wouldn't mind a long pull on the main :D

Ivory Micarta and bar shield. Since the blades are going to be carbon, I'd go with brass liners and stainless bolsters for those folks with nickel allergy.

My wish list:
-wraparound spring (pleeease)
-bar shield
-square bolsters
-long pull
-pen in front of main
-rattail grooves

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of for now ;)

Ivory Micarta for sure. I'd like to see the cloth pattern, but I don't know if you can get that smooth or not.

Since we are going with a carbon blade, I don't think stainless liners are what I'd want. Brass me. Stainless bolsters would work.

Federal shield?

Long nick, swedged long sheep foot as the primary? Yes!

I'd probably want a long pen for the secondary..... maybe a long clip.

I like the wraparound spring, if feasible.
A shield which is centered along the length with a bit of a point at mid-point aimed at the blades, when closed. Maybe some bend matching the back of the handle. Hard to describe, but maybe you can see it.
Plain bolsters are good, as I have one knife with lightly engraved bolsters, and they look bad after some wear.
I like NS bolsters and liners and would prefer them to brass, but would love steel, if cost effective.
Ivory Micarta is my choice for handle.

All else is secondary, and I'll be happy with the group's choices.

Thanks, guys, for all your hard work so far!

im still on the fence a bit on whether im going to get this or not (budget problems)
but it would be interesting if it were a trapper instead of a regular jack. ofcourse it would be somewhat redundant as i believe last years was a trapper with a wharny and clip. but still would be interesting to see a congress trapper :P

This pattern needs a long sheepsfoot/wharncliff for the main blade. Pen blade about half the size of the main blade. If a clip blade is chosen, it should be as long as, or almost as long as, the main blade. I vote for a pen blade though.

I think a shield would look good on this pattern, but might clash with micarta scales. We need a swedge, and a long pull on the main blade. I would like to see bolsters on one side, shadow pattern. What about delrin that looks like bone for the synthetic covers?

I will probably change my mind five times before the poll is over, but, this is not the thread for that, so...

I'm really excited about this years choice. I hope we can find some classy looking faux tortoise shell/acrylic to top off this congress jack pattern.
Also, a bar shield would look top shelf.

You and I are almost on the same page..... I still want ivory micarta. :D

Really looking forward to this...
My wish list (not that I know anything, and I'll buy it anyway, but...)
Wraparound spring - looks SO nice
Looooong sheepsfoot primary with swedges
Longer than average pen secondary, or maybe a small clip? Hmm

Other than those things, well, as I said, I'll buy one regardless. But I might buy two if it has those things.

<Edit to add a picture, not mine, but beautiful example another member posted in the other thread>
If it were close to this, I'd buy two and maybe three

Scale materials in order of preference:

That Panama White Linen micarta that I'm seeing on Canal Streets nowadays
Ivory or butterscotch paper micarta,
A nice-looking tortoiseshell acrylic

Bent Bar shield
If micarta, I think a shadow pattern (no bolsters) would help set this apart from other current production knives

Oh, and a lambsfoot primary could make this more pocket-friendly!

I'd like it to be as close as feasible to the Remington Congress Jack

Long as possible Master blade in relation to handle size

Antique Ivory colour or the Butterscotch micarta. Some reds are viable too. Tortoise faux could be very OK as well.

The shield should be long as this is a long relatively slim knife(width not thickness) Gimp shield, Bowtie or Curved Bar/Frankfurter e.g.

Rat-Tail bolsters would be very good, providing not too wide. This would increase costs though. Lined bolster or how about Slant?

I prefer nickel liners to brass but it's not crucial.

Thanks, Will

No small clips for the secondary! Little bitty clips look silly on a big frame. If it has to be short, make it a pen.

If a clip, it needs to be near as long as the main blade.

I have been waiting for a unique Congress!!!
How about a long Wharncliffe and spey blade set, bar shield, rat tailed bolsters and blue or green or red linen micarta scales? Wrap around spring?

First, I want to thank everyone for making this the year of the Congress Jack! I really like this pattern; it's an easy carry and good worker.

I like a long sheepsfoot with a swedge and a long pull primary and a pen secondary. Plain bolsters are okay, I plan to use the heck out of one (or more) of these. Tortoise shell or Ivory micarta are great choices. I think if we do go with tortoise we should forego the shield.
