Since it has to be Congress....then let it be Congress J 3.5-4 something different at least.

Well, it's been a busy week here in the first 2013 knife poll! While the sodbuster kept up with the congresses on that first evening, the congresses have since pulled away to have more votes than the next several patterns combined. Dave, Frank, Gary and I have discussed it, and in the interest of moving things along so that we can all actually have these knives in our pockets, we will be posting several polls at once - one will be to choose "half" or jack pattern and size range, one for cover type, and one for steel type. Bear in mind that the size, steel, and cover polls will not set the details, but rather the general direction, since we won't know exactly what can be offered with these options until we send out for bids. For example, something like "purple horsecut jigged micarta" won't be an option because we don't know if anyone can provide it. However, "micarta" can get us in the right direction as far as bidding it out to manufacturers goes. Same thing with the size and steel.

For some good examples, please take a look at posts 75 and 76 here.

Two things two keep in mind about this poll:
  • Size at this point is just a ballpark figure. We won't know for sure until we talk to manufacturers and see what they can easily tool up for.
  • The blades will be different based on the pattern. Both patterns will have some version of wharncliffe/sheepsfoot who said anything about a wharncliffe? A Wharncliffe will not do. main blade and a pen secondary. The jack will have a longer main blade and the half will have a smaller main because of the single spring and second blade arrangement.
Please be sure to vote in all polls, if you have a preference. We will sticky them so they're easy to find.

We would like to thank everyone who has chipped in with votes and ideas so far. I think it will be pretty neat to have a knife with a little bit of all of us in it!

This poll will stay open until March 3.

No wharncliffe please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am with ya ED. Sheepsfoot all the way. I would also like to explore the secondary blade choice, who says it has to be a pen? I would like to see a small clip as the secondary, little more rare and a slimmer/sharper tip to pair with the blunted sheepsfoot.

Honestly, for a "go to Sunday meeting" a Wharncliffe looks elegant compared to other blades. I wouldn't be opposed to a sheep's foot main with something else for the secondary. If it's going to be a clip, I'd want a bigger clip than a pen. A small pen just kind of gives some versatility over some other blades..... especially if you are going to have a minimal tip blade main like a sheep's foot.

No Wharnie for me, too - Please!

I voted 3.5" - 4.0" for the size :)

EDIT: I voted for Congress Jack.

I found this pic and realized that this is what I had pictured in my head as my personal ideal, as far as blades go, but with different covers:

I too would be in favor of talking more about a second blade choice, as spey would be my preference with the sheepsfoot/lambs foot idea, but a nice clip would suit me well. Hopefully if pen is chosen it is a variety with a decent amount if belly.

Sheepsfoot and pen for me as well.
As for size, I would prefer something around 3,5 inches. Being a jackknife, we could use the whole handle length for the main blade (a single spring half congress would not allow that), so I would like to keep far from 4 inches.

So you just thought that because you like the wharncliffe in the picture that you would introduce it at this point.

jack 3 - 3.5 i wont mind a 3.5-4 though.... just want it either change pocket friendly or back pocket friendly. either one will do :)

Thanks,
Scott

I see that as more of a sheepsfoot. When I think "wharncliffe" I think of this:

I prefer a sheepsfoot for the forum knife over a wharncliffe as the main blade, for what it's worth. Much more traditional.

Let's keep the vitriol out of this please. That image was also posted in the original pattern thread as an example of a Congress Jack.

Well, I fold. I'm not interested in adding another Congress to the stable at this point.

Good luck with the rest and I hope it turns out well!:)

I'm down for the Congress Jack, 3.5" preferably though a little smaller or bigger either side is cool.
