Here's a couple of Micarta examples.

 nice, like the one on the left, butterscotch?
I think it was called Butterscotch, that's what it reminds me of. It's a Half Congress (sorry Ken ;)) made by Rick Menefee, that I got from Vince (VCM3).

The SBG was made by Ken Erickson and is Antique Ivory.

Rick's swedges are second to none. And Vince sells all the cool toys.

I can't wait for the poll for picking the color of micarta, assuming it wins. Looks like bone is making a late charge.

Yeah, but it's got a lot of ground to cover. Still, since it looks like we are going 1095, I'd probably rather have bone or wood. I really wanted the micarta with the stainless. It won't matter, it'll be a sweet knife either way.

Went for wood but I'm hoping for natural material so bone's good to, looks like I'm in a minority though :)

Natural....wood....

I'll probbaly buy it either way, but really, wood, then bone. I'm actually surprized that synthetic is leading....

We don't know who will be making this knife yet at this point. And as stated WE most likely won't have much of an option as far as the color goes. We will get the bids from as many makers as possible and see what our options are as far as color goes. IF, I repeat IF we get options then there will be a choice to be made. I know for instance there's been a lot of talk about Ivory micarta but, we don't even know if ANY of the manufacturers have any ivory micarta on hand.

I am ASSUMING that for cost sake we are using what the maker has on hand. But we don't know that yet either.

I know we dont have any control per say.....Just think that when the shopping around begins we should send out what WE want, with our top picks. Have the company's source our requests if need be and give us theyre price. They can also feel free to give us a cheaper option with stock on hand. I dont get how we feel like we are stepping on their toes or should feel weird about telling them what we want. They will make money off the deal. Heck I love GEC but did get turned off that they made last years pattern so quickly in regular production and cheaper( and we had to pay for the tooling????). Its business and as consumers shopping around for a custom order, we should get to ask for what we want. Companys are in business to make money and will give us a price based on what they need to make.

That's pretty much exactly what will be done. This isn't our first rodeo. ;)

I figured as much Gary but it just seemed like the tone lately has been that of walking on eggshells about the manufacturers. This is business for them and they profit from our wants.

Thanks for all the comity does, im very appreciative of the effort you all are giving. Keep up the great work

I agree with rock golfer, we should be able to get what we want. They are making money after all!! I don't see why them ordering something is such a big deal

Because if they have to order something special, that will raise the cost of producing the knife, which means they will have to charge us more for it. We are trying to make the knife as affordable as possible and still have it be a unique knife.

Let's watch those exclamation points. This is a discussion, not a knock-down drag-out argument.

Remember this is all done by majority vote but we still have to work within' the limits of the proposed end point price based on what the manufacturers are willin' to do, just 'cause some feel they want what they want we're still tryin'll to make this available to the widest range of collectors and end users.

If you're lookin' to plead your case for what ya want, ya may wanna do it in the kick off/chat thread, lets try and keep the debates outta the polling thread folks.

I voted for wood, but I wouldn't mind if micarta wins... that cream colored example above looks really nice.

I for one am certainly not trying to debate or bring the thread off topic. We are talking about outsource costs for material and it could be a deciding factor for people still waiting to cast a vote. Micarta is far from expensive, heck the material in a knife is the cheapest part. Just expressing my opinion as others have done before. Maybe my tone does not come off right with my choice of words but I am not on here to cause trouble, just have stimulating conversation with folks that share a common interest. My apologies if my comments came off the wrong way.

Frank,

With respect to the manufactures profit margin

We have always been charged top retail price
The manufacturer is already getting the mark up that normally goes to the whole wholesaler
And this is on a pre-sale with numbers sold garanteed

Not a big financial risk

I voted for Bone, but a nice micarta would be wonderful. I don't want tortoise shell.

Thanks for voting, everyone! We're going to close this round of polls. Once we get our poop in a group, we'll let you know what our next steps are.
