2013 BladeForums Traditional Forum Knife Pre-Order thread

You are probably right, Ed.I should have prefaced it with "In my opinion". I've spent many years in circumstances where I couldn't afford luxuries. I managed to dig my way out of $10,000 of credit card debt when that was half my gross annual income. I didn't do so by spending money on club knives or anything else I could live without. Even in those days, I could come up with that much for something I had to have, such as new tires for my truck so I could get to work, by scrimping and saving for three months.

I apologize to all those I offended by advocating fiscal responsibility, and I'll shut up and leave the thread to others now.

For me, it's not about the pattern, it's about Bladeforums. I'm more of a reader than a poster (AKA Lurker), but I buy these knives because they are traditional, limited edition, well designed AND (Most importantly) part of being a member on BF. Over the last few years (I think my first was 2009. I'll have to check it later) I've really enjoyed the process of getting the forum knife together. I love the fact that we have a say in the design, and even though the design I wanted lost out most years, I still buy and cherish them.
It feels like it all started really positively and that it has somehow lost momentum and become a bit negative this year.

^ This.

Had I designed a knife for myself, this wouldn't be it but a LOT of people have been wanting this pattern for a number of years only to see it dropped out in the final voting. If my buying one helped to make it happen, glad to do it.

It's a BLADE FORUMS knife and I will LOVE carrying it with pride.

This year's knife is not my cup of tea, but I ordered one a while back anyway. Who knows, maybe it'll be my grail knife once I get it in my hands.

I appreciate those of you who are supporting this knife project even if it isn't your cups of tea. For some crazy reason, it is my dream knife, and I would be very disappointed if it doesn't get made. I'm perfectly willing to wait however long it takes, though I certainly wouldn't mind getting an official update from time to time.

Fair enough Jack and I got a chuckle from the portion of your post I highlighted - I get it.

I would be very disappointed to get a refund, prefer to get the knives.

Sorry, double post was an accident, not for effect.

This is why I made it clear early on that I wouldn't be able to this year even though the vote thread I had every intention on buying one...good intentions don't pay my wifes medical bills. I really hope its a go ahead for those who have ordered!

Well said.

Man, I gotta get on this! I've been away for far too long. I was going to skip it since I don't like large congress shapes (they like to wear their way through my pants pockets, but just figured out that this would be a great briefcase knife. And a smaller tang stamp might (hopefully) allow a Peanut in a subsequent year.

Jwh, my prayers go out to you.

I love the sound of a BF peanut for a future project.

As homer would say ... mmmmmmmm... BladeForums peanut ......

Or something like that. :)

... the lowish turnout for a Wharncliffe/Sheepsfoot main blade was foreshadowed in these two polls from last year...

Allow me to point out that the 2012 knife had a Wharncliff blade (and there was a lot of contention with that). That was an old pattern, unavailable at that time, and rather special. Since then not only has GEC put this pattern out under multiple "brands", but Case went so far as to have Tony Bose make a very similar pattern as this years collaboration. In my opinion our "forum" knife basically provided two major manufacturers with marketing and resulting sales of a pattern neather offered previously.

I have advocated the use of this forum for reviving old patterns many times, and hope this years chosen pattern would have the same results. That's why I dislike getting a popular, already easy to find, pattern for the "knife of the year". There are over 136,000 folding knives on eBay right now; not one is a Congress Jack.

Just think of the patterns we could have, and the change we could affect if we could get historical patterns revisited, even in limited numbers. Every gun MFR in the world brings back old patterns (usually successfully), we can help our hobby revive these hard to find patterns by supporting projects like this.

I'm one of those who was disappointed that this congress jack wasn't made last year. Ever since the polls showed this one was in contention again, I've be pretty excited.

Please don't cancel this!

I do like the idea of reviving old patterns, but foremost in my planning is getting a knife I want. Luckily, I want most knives out there, and will most likely buy every BFC Traditional SFO that comes out for the foreseeable future.

^^ This.

I'm fairly new to BF, but I've found my awareness and appreciation for knives outside my "comfort zone" has grown significantly since joining and perusing these forums.

I had little to no interest in traditional knives and know even less about them. To me they are something my dad or granddad might have carried.

So, I followed along with the 2013 BF Knife Thread with interest but didn't participate - using it as a learning opportunity.

I decided to buy one sight unseen to support the community. So, many thanks to those who put in all of the hard work to organize and see this through and to Spark for hosting it.

Sadly, I feel the same as Chinpo that the momentum and spirit behind building a "forum knife" has been lost to bickering, contentiousness, and more than a little selfishness and childishness.

There's also the feeling that this is more of a business venture than community project.

I still look forward to the knife, hopefully at this late stage it will still come to fruition and won't stall future knife builds.

v/r,
Shane

Well, I guess now is as good a time as any for an update about the actual knife itself. Bill at GEC had, in the past, shown us a couple examples of some micarta that he was working with and, for various reasons (color, texture, etc.) was not satisfied to use on our knife. Recently, he has been talking to some other suppliers outside of his normal ones and hopes to have something that he feels will work well for us.

Once work starts, we should have some pics of the tooling and progress to post, as well, from what Bill has told me in previous conversations. Here's hoping...

Yes, thanks! I think more than anything else that what has people a bit antsy has been the lack of any communication for a while. As long as people know that there's progress of some kind being made, everybody's OK with it. But it's been crickets chirping in this thread for weeks now.

Yeah, I understand that; I honestly thought we'd have more to actually report on by now instead of saying "Bill's ready whenever we are." I'd like to see whatever paid orders Spark has go to production now, as well, just so we can move things along. Hopefully, he'll let us know what his plans are soon.
