2013 BladeForums Traditional Knife Official KICKOFF!

As I've written before: let's have something we have not done before.
Bone, almost always BROWN has been done before, as has stag, even wood has appeared once. So, delrin, smooth bone or bone other than brown?

Peanut-sized single clip blade with anything BUT brown sawcut derlin handles. No matter what steel they use, I'm sure it will be good based on their track record, so I don't care whether it's stainless or 1095 or O1 etc. Also, a more utilitarian and basic etch, if possible.

Cheers,
Connor

Ok going to throw this out there. The new Maverick frame looks a lot like a Congress with rounded bolsters. It strikes me as this pattern would be a good start to construct a decent sized Congress Jack on as it is a little larger than GECs current Congress. Will have to snap some pics to illustrate.

The new Maverick frame may be sway-backed Mink but because of the bolsters does not resemble a Congress at all.

A Congress won the poll and a Congress is what we should get.

And who said we're going to have GEC build it?:) That's a long way down the road before that will be decided. I'd bet Daniels over at Queen might want to give it a go.

i'm thinking i might be out of this..... after weighing the pro's and con's i've decided to not go out of my way to get this particular knife (extrmely tight budget= probably 2-3 months minimum saving time) as i have no real reason to get one. i already have a congress and want to try some new patterns (im still a bit green in the knife world). it appears as though my votes in the polls didnt sway anything one way or the other as everything that is winning is winning by quite a bit :P. hopefully i'll still be able to get one, but not quite sure if i will. of course it all really depends on when the knife goes up for sale. but right now i'd really like to try something new(to me anyways) :)
im sure it will be a beaut though, and sure will enjoy looking at the pictures :P.

Still learning Ed. They looked very similar to my eye but the maverick being slightly larger. As for whether its GEc or not, no idea or preference, hey its been 6 years since CSC did one. :D

Bulldog knives did put out a 6-blade knife and an 8-blade knife with rounded bolsters that they called a Congress but it was kind of odd looking.

I was standing right across the table from Ryan, when a member of our local knife club asked him if they would build a knife for the club, at the Chesapeake show. Ryan was very interested and said that club knives etc are something they want to do. I really like Great Eastern's knife for 2012, and would be happy with either Queen, Canal Street or Great Eastern. I'm really looking forward to a congress jack. I voted for 3", but 3.5" would be good too. 4" would be pushing it, for the pattern. Looking for a carry knife, not a farm implement :D.

3 5/8" or 3 3/4" would be perfect.

I think a Queen from the new owners would be great!

As long as its made with new jigging/tooling from the new owners... which would defeat (one of the) purposes of going with existing jigging, ie, to keep costs down.

If Queen is in the process of retooling, however, this could be a very good time to work with them again.

If we do go with Queen I'd also hope that they would revisit their blade grinding procedure...I'm not a big fan of thick edges on my pocket knives.

What makes you think the covers on the 2013 Blade Forums knife are going to be jigged? Synthetic covers will be the winner and I don't think the members are going to want jigged micarta, acrylic, perylic, etc.. Queen doesn't necessarily need to use new tooling. They just need to pay attention to assembly, fit, and finish like they used to say pre-2008.

I think Daniels would be more motivated to make our 2013 Blade Forums knife than GEC would. GEC's getting pretty comfy in what may be their perceived "in" with us.

My vote was for a half congress in gaboon ebony but I'm good with the congress jack. Still prefer jet black ebony and will wait for final poll results. I'll be disappointed with micarta but its not a game changer for me. I would like to see sunk joints and round bolsters. I also like the shield shown at the top of post #42.

In a shameless attempt to rally support for ebony I offer this picture on post #10. A congress should be classy and ebony exudes class.

Considering the poll results so far, the odds are we will be getting a 3,5 to 4 inches Congress Jack...which obviously makes me happy. Now, if GEC and Queen are the most probable options, we could just stick to their existing Congress frames (3,5 for the GEC 61 frame and 3,625 for the Queen), this might keep the cost down, and allow for more details (on bolsters, spring and so on). Obviously, this is just a suggestion.

Nothing at all! I apologize for the confusion of my word choice. I was referring to "jigging" in the sense of (From Wikipedia),

In metalworking and woodworking, a jig is a type of custom-made tool used to control the location and/or motion of another tool. A jig's primary purpose is to provide repeatability, accuracy, and interchangeability in the manufacturing of products.

Queen doesn't necessarily need to use new tooling. They just need to pay attention to assembly, fit, and finish like they used to say pre-2008.

Possibly.

If the initial tolerances are off, however, there's only so much that "paying attention" can accomplish, after the fact. It's just something to keep in mind.

No need to apologize. I just didn't read it the way you intended it.

I've seen a few pieces from Queen/Schatt & Morgan post Daniels' ownership that was built on the old Queen tooling. Very nice. No gaps, better ground blades, etc.. But time will tell. It would be foolish (my .02¢) of Queen to abandon all their existing tooling.

You know, some synthetics are able to take jigging quite well. That might be an interesting avenue to pursue depending on what synthetic is selected.

3 5/8"

Mike at Collectors is now showing a S&M (Queen) Half Congress at 3 5/8"
Which means Queen has the frame size

Wow! Over 300 votes on steel! With a minimum of about 240 votes on the other 2 polls, it's looking like a great deal of interest in this year's knife!

I can imagine an order larger than last year's.

Either way, things are moving in a very good direction.:D
