2013 BladeForums Traditional Knife Official KICKOFF!

OK, assuming the Congress is the winner, what's going to take it to the next level to make it "The 2013 BladeForums Knife"? Traditional without being just another copy?

Honestly, I don't know exactly what a Congress knife was designed to do, if anything. Personally, I admire a tools performance and function over aesthetics.

Is it possible to clarify the Congress's purpose, and then find ways to make it exceptional in that regard, in materials and design?

I know, a lot of questions without many answers, but I was hoping wiser and more experienced heads could provide some answers.

BTW Timberweasel, I love the character and look of those Coke Bottle patterns! Thanks!

I believe the congress pocket knife was designed to cut pieces of chaw from your plug of tobacco.

I don't recall posting very much in this forum but I have seen GEC in so many threads that I decided to buy one to see what it was all about, It was between a Congress or a Whittler, I went with this:

Great Eastern Cutlery #79 - Tidioute Three Back Spring Whittler - Green Select LG
I certainly don't know as much about traditionals as many of you on this forum but I do remember a time when traditionals were all I ever saw people carrying, My first was a Schrade Old Timer, I voted for a Congress but I plan on buying this years Forum knife regardless of which style because I love Bladeforums.:)

I'm tryin to find where I saw it but IIRC the pattern was called a CONGRESS in reference to the meeting of the blades the definition of congress is, "The act of coming together or meeting."

As far as the blade choice, since the there were typically from 2-6 blades you usually had a large choice of blades with redundant back ups, like 2 Sheepsfoot blades.

I'm looking for something to back me up, hey at least it sounds like it makes sense. ;)

A full-on Congress. My Case CV 4 1/8" 6488 Congress. Now, imagine a Congress Jack with the sheepsfoot blade and the pen blade as they appear on your right as you're looking at the first picture.

Do a search for Congress Knife in the search box for many threads on this great pattern.

I'm still rooting for the Soddy and hoping that there will be a vote between the frontrunner patterns, but to hedge my bet...I hope that if we go with a Congress Jack that the main blade will be one of those Sheffield stepped Lambsfoot blades - make it a little more unique and the blade wouldn't jut out as far from the frame when closed. Just sayin'

Anyone know if there will be a second poll with the bottom contenders of the first poll removed? Might give the 'dark horse' voters a chance to consolidate... :)

I'd like to propose a two-bladed Coke Bottle jack, the "Jack & Coke" if you will, with a nice dark molasses or burnt red jigged bone handle. Tasty! :D

If it keeps going like it is, the only run-off poll should be two choices.

1. Half Congress
2. Congress Jack

If you want a two-bladed Coke Bottle jack there are plenty of vendors that sell them.

Sodbusters come in just below a box-cutter on my list of useful knives. I've got plenty of Sodbusters and plenty of box-cutters and by using both types, have come to my brilliant conclusion contained in the first sentence of this post.:rolleyes:

There's Sodbusters and then there's Supersodbusters.:D

I would've favoured the term Single Blade knife rather than only Sodbuster, as we have not yet had a single-blade......

So, will it be a run off between the Congresses? A House Divided.....

With all this Congress pattern talk, I hope hope hope hope that it's a Congress Jack, so we can have at least ONE blade of a full, proper length!

 Them's fightin words!

How about a full congress with four hawkbill blades!!!!!!

Of course you chopped up my post in your re-hash of what I said which by the way was tongue in cheek. However, when you think about it, a box-cutter is much more efficient than a sodbuster.

If you wanted a full congress with four hawkbill blades, you should have had them list it in the poll.
