2013 BladeForums Traditional Knife Official KICKOFF!

I have thought a lot about this and have one suggestion. Take GEC's #79 sleeveboard frame and go single spring with a clip or spear main and a coping/sheepsfoot small secondary on the other side. A sleeveboard double ended jack.

Ok, this is my official request. I would like a Coffin Jack. Bone, Ebony or even stag I dont care. Spear and coping, Clip and Coping, Clip and Spey...I dont care. But I love the Coffin frame

Thanks to Blaine and Dave.

Personally I like the idea of a single-blade, a Sodbuster, Lambsfoot, or Sheepsfoot, maybe with ebony scales. However, I also liked Andi's suggestion of a two blade ebony Pemberton.

I'd love to see a Peanut on Steroids! a.k.a. a 3-1/4" Jackknife.

We've had some big, heavy folding knives in recent years. How about a smaller, straightforward Jackknife? Clip blade as main, Wharncliffe as secondary. 3-1/4". Perfect, like a Peanut on steriods, with rounded bolsters and pocket friendly.

Most makers are set up for the frame so the cost would be minimal and leave room for special scales, but spec'ing carbon or tool steel blades would make it unique, along with the Wharncliffe secondary blade.

Completely agree, I'd love to see this! Also, to support another earlier suggestion I think some non bone scales would be a refreshing change of pace, I would especially like to see ivory micarta or canvas micarta.

I'm new here and this will be my first experience with this process. I would very much like to get what ever you guys come up with but I top out at $100.

What ever you all decide on I would be happy to donate the shields if your interested.

Keep in mind something, when ya talk about two blades on a single spring the blades hafta be thinner and crinked/bent slightly to show them to best together.

Also keep in mind that there are very few manufacturers willing to work within our constrictions we are a small SFO, the companies that have been willin' to work with us to date are:

Canal Street Cutlery 2006 Ring Opener Pen. 2 blades, (pen and nail file)
Canal Street Cutlery 2007 Canittler. 3 blades (large spear, small spear and sheepsfot)
Northwoods Cutlery 2008 Medium Stockman. 3 blades. (clip, spey and sheepsfot)
Queen/Schatt Morgan. 2009 Barlow. 2 blades (clip and wharncliff
Queen Cutlery 2010 Moose. 2 blades (clip and spear)
GEC Cutlery. 2011 EO Candlestick Jack. 2 blades (spear and bottle opener/screwdriver)
GEC Cutlery. 2012 Wharncliff Trapper 2 blades. (clip and wharncliff)

Hopefully this'll give ya an idea of what we've done in the past, I'll post the correspondin' picture later.

I have no idea where this fits, but as it is a point of curiosity (and potentially, "hope") I'll put it here

This is another forum's 2012 knife (the "frosting" is mine):
CStForumKnife_zpsf48d29a7.jpg

Some of the specs:
Two clip point blades made with super high quality 14-4 CrMo steel
Genuine American Elk antler handle slabs
"(Forum)" etch on the mark side of the master blade
Custom raised letter (Forum) nickel silver shield
Exclusive (Forum) Edition - 100 pieces made
Packaged in protective drawstring pouch inside a blue box that sports a custom (Forum) label
Limited lifetime warranty

The main reason I present all this that its final price, including all kinds of forum identifiers/customizations, was (is) $75.

If I recall, last year Canal Street wasn't in a position to produce a forum knife for Bladeforums, and I'm not promoting them as a manufacturer for this year's.

I just like how much they were able to offer, especially for that price. Perhaps there was subsidization involved...? If not, I'd be interested in seeing if they'd be willing to work with us again, or how we can accomplish as much in a similar price range with another manufacturer.

And, while I understand there has been "process" in place here in previous years, I've also gleaned that some processes haven't necessarily been the most efficient (or unfraught!) means of accomplishing a forum knife.

Rather than coming up with a pattern No One will make for us (and/or without significant compromises or an untoward cost), might it not be helpful for the A-Team to determine what options might be possible through talking with known manufacturers, and then voting on those...?

Or at least, maybe we can vote on pattern ideas sooner than later here, maybe down to a top three, and see what's actually viable in the Big World?

This works for me but my preference is for a slightly longer closed length, 3 1/2" or 3 5/8", but I'd still buy one in the shorter length. Cap for me would be $150 but that might be a stretch even so, depending on the budget that month.

Though what Robb is describing is one of the variants of the Case Mini Trapper.

Hi, everyone! I'm Blaine and I'll be one of your cat herders/whipping boys/poll jockeys. I believe Dave will be along in a bit to introduce himself, as well.

Before the action gets started, I just wanted to take a minute to say a few things.

First, I'd like to thank Peregrin (Gary), knarfeng (Frank), and Spark (Kevin) for all the work they put into this forum that has brought us all together and makes things like this possible. I'd also like to thank all of you, from whom I have learned so much already. I have barely scratched the surface of this hobby, and I learn something new every day here. We'll probably be asking those of you who have been on committees in the past some questions as we go along, so I'd like to thank you guys in advance for any help and guidance you can provide us.

We would like to have the first poll up tomorrow, which will be a first-round pattern selection. If there is a clear winner, we should be able to move on to the next step. If there are two or more that are close when the poll ends, we may need a second round to get a good majority of people who are behind the final decision.

It's great to see so much enthusiasm for this year's knife; I know Dave and I are both looking forward to seeing where this is going to end up. Feel free to contact either Dave or me with any questions or concerns you have as we move forward.

All great points P.

I am not going to dive back to the past and read all the old stuff and how it went(take to long). I would think voting on number of blades would be the first poll. Narrow down the options for the following polls.

HALF CONGRESS, sorry didn't mean to shout, I'll be watchin' this thread closely any help I can offer keepin' an eye on the polls, what ever I can do.

Just glad the official thread has started.

PLEASE I NEED A HALF CONGRESS I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED ONE

Or I guess I would love a back pocket...to

I'm gonna go ahead and repost this picture here in this thread...big fan of this frame, would love to see a forum knife in a single spring variant using this frame

SchradeCutTexasJack1.jpg

This!

And if not this, then a Congress Jack. But I gotta agree, a single spring two blade would be super sweet!

Cheers,
Griff

And I almost forgot  Thank you to everyone here who makes this knife happen. From our forum host Spark, to our Moderators Frank and Gary, and to Blaine and Dave who have taken on the task of steering the selection.

Having moderated a forum elsewhere for many years, I know it isn't easy.

Blaine, thank you, and thank you to Dave. I was going to sit back and relax, looking over some pitchers, but it looks like we are on a roll. Can you include some pics or drawings of specific pattern choices? After reading the thread I started, I realize I don't know half the patterns out there that I thought I did.
