2013 Forum knife?

Lots of great ideas flowing. What about the Buckaroo/owl frame with a clip, sheepsfoot, awl/punch and caplifter/screwdriver combo? Be a nice little scout knife, maybe with ebony covers? :D

A Congress Jack, with thin blades, less than 4", white micarta scales, maybe pinched bolsters, in stainless? Grandpa would call that a "Sunday go to meetin' knife".

Why disappoint your grandpa on his Sunday meetings? :D
Jokes aside, I think this would be a great idea, and pretty different from the previous forum knives.
Also, as I pointed out when we were chatting about the 2012 knife, should we choose GEC to make it, we would probably get a good deal and lower the price (as others suggested), since their Congress frame would work pretty fine for a CJ.

The problem as has been mentioned before is that more blades equals more $, I like the track of a Congress on a single backspring, the thinner frame is somethin' we haven't done yet, I've carried many thick mulyi blades before and once ya get above a medium stockman in size ya have a hefty knife, maybe too heavy for EDC in the pocket.

If we stick with a single blade pattern we can have more money to go towards blade steel, scales/liner materials and still have a decent sized pocket carry blade.

As this thread grows quickly, (and it will get big fast) new members will be tryin' to jump in with their grail knife and this is a better place for those wishes than when the real thread pollin' threads start...

I know I'm all over the place with this post so i have a few last comments I wanna make is to the new members considerin' on buyin' and bein' involved in the decidin' process.

1) Do a search on Forum Knives, there's a lot of info and discussion on the process we go through and reading through these threads will save ya a lot of aggrevation when all is said and done and ya find out ya didn't get a one off knife made to your custom specs.

2) ...which leads me to this point, this has been a democratic process so majority rules, if it's not what ya like, don't vote on pattern, scales, ect... That's not to say ya can't lobby for your favorite choices, we had a few close calls that got changed in a last minute count.

3) Be patient, this process can take up to a year, although last years knife was the fastest from start to finish of all 7 knives so far. Also remember that the people involved are all volunteers who give up their time for the love of this forum, it's members and the love of our obsessions, (knives) so don't take out any anger or frustrations on the voluteers, (it makes it harder for members to offer up their time if they're afraid of bein' hammered for their efforts).

4) Finally, in all 7 years I've been involved with the choosin' of the Traditional Forum Knives, this process was always meant to be fun and for some a learning process into what actually goes into the making of a knife and all the subsequent decisions needed to produce a club knife.

So have fun, be knice and remember vote Congress or Congress Jack when the pattern vote comes up... That is all thank you and we now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion... ;)

I agree with the above post- I would rather have a single blade but better steel and handle material! Also, less than 4" makes for a easier carry knife..........

Thanks for the informative post for all new to the process, we were all there once. Four club knives ago on the 2009 discussion I ask how one gets in on it and I don’t remember who possible Bastid or Blues to my surprise replied you just did. (Thanks guys). It’s been great to follow and collect the end result.
I guess I just wanted to say it’s like being in a volunteer fire department; these guys do a lot of work behind the scenes. Please be patient with the process and the ones working to get the knives to us. It gets better each year.

Here's a quick pic of all the BF Traditional Forum knives, from 2006-2012, all 7 of 'em with their respective boxes/tubes.

A single spring congress wouldn't be able to be a congress jack, unless it had only one blade.. If we were going to stick to a single spring, I'd rather see a toothpick, hunter, sodbuster, coke bottle, or some other single blade knife. Although after thinking about it for a minute a single blade congress might be sort of cool...

It is good to see the whole collection, Ted. Thanks for posting them!

Looking at them gives some perspective. What can we add that will compliment the group?

We need a nice thin toothpick. One with the best looking clip blade you can come up with.

You could sell me on a Congress, ya could sell me on a Coke Bottle/Swell Center, even a fancy Sodbuster but you'll never sell me on a ........ who am I kiddin', I'm so commited, (my wife always says I should be commited) I'm gettin' one of whatever we pick.

Ooh look... a nickle on the floor, time to start the 2013 Forum Knife fund... ;)

"My, you're looking fine tonight! And look at all your suave companions. You've really gone all out, this time."

I agree, thanks Ted for showing the array! If nothing else, I do think something other than "brown" might be a nice change, the Cannitler excepted.

I don't think I've read one bad idea here yet. Every suggestion so far would make a great forum knife! I think it is going to probably come down to either a congress jack or a sod buster. Whatever gets decided upon, I will most likely be excited about it.

I'm crossing my fingers that whatever the 2013 forum knife will be, it will not have a large wharncliffe blade. The only thing that I don't really like about the larger wharncliffe blades is the way that the back spine sticks so far out of the knife's handle when closed. On a larger knife like the 2012 forum trapper, it becomes a little uncomfortable for me during use when gripping the handle with force. If a wharncliffe blade gets chosen, I'm sure it will still be worth checking out... In any case, I'm hoping it will be a fancy clip blade :)

We need a nice thin toothpick. One with the best looking clip blade you can come up with.

Now that's a great idea. Sign me up for one of those!

I'm thinking a blue Kershaw....

Seriously, we need to do a smaller knife. While I like the past years, it's really too big for everyday carry. And looking at the last few years that's pretty much true of all of them. My FR Congress Jack is 3 5/8" and 7/16" wide. That's considerably smaller than the Trapper or EO. The difference is in the blades; like most modern knives we're getting blades that are too thick. Thinner blades slice (and sharpen) better.

Using a material like micarta or acrylic would allow the scales to be slimmer also. If we do stainless blades the use of a more modern scale material would be indicated. And while I tend to prefer micarta (ivory) the idea of tortoise shell works too.

Last two years, the knives have been folders. How about the 2013 knife being a fixed blade this time? Something small enough to be an EDC.

The blades on last year's knife are plenty thin. Also, 7/16" isn't even wide enough for the stamp. If we do go with a Congress Jack, it will have to be wider.

ETA. I remeasured and it would barely fit. It would be a tight squeeze though.
