2013 Forum knife?

Yes, I mean Canal Street. I feel we should move to a different company also. It would be great to see what the Daniel's family could do for us.

We have had acres of words about Canal street. They have not gotten our business lately, because the do not pin their shields, but glue them in. That is enough to stop me from buying a forum knife from them. Lest we forget, we usually try to get something traditional in style, materials and construction. Picky, picky, I know. But I for one refuse to forget time proven methods.
I have had shields fall out of modern Case and Canal Street knives. Why would I accept that as O.K?

I am with you Ed, I cant afford $150 for a knife right now. I have to use GEC as my price guide because thats what I buy. Right now three blade knives in different frame sizes can be had for less than $85. How does one know how much we would be charged to add or take away a blade? Who says another company wouldnt give us a better price? So many variables involved, we need an idea first and then the details can be formed from ballpark pricing from a few different manufacturers. I love GEC but they are not the only ones around.

true but we (the guys behind the scenes) did and if i remember correctly from the emails goin round behind the scenes, CSC didnt return email/call, queen wasnt interested and Case was out cause of minimum quantity and flexibility. Maybe this time will be different and im sure it will be shopped around, GEC makes a heck of a knife and are good people to work with, Queen was also good to work with for the 2010... Canal Streets offerings tend to be on the pricey side even before customization, but that knife came before my time of workin on things here

Queen (Shatt & Morgan) already has a Sowbelly pattern so tooling wouldn't be an issue so much as selecting our blade steel and handle material...
-it's settled then! Sowbelly in 2013!! :D

Simple, no shield and better handle material ;)

The pinned shield does not bother me as much, you (Waynorth) seem to be partial to GEC. I like stainless liners also.

A pinned shield isn't a must for me nor is a shield at all for that matter. If Queen glues their shields too, does that let them out too? Can't remember if the 2010 knives by Queen had pinned or glued shields.

Queen might not have been interested then but under new ownership, they may be. It wouldn't hurt to ask. GEC is pricey for many of our members.

If a glued shield and perhaps delrin or acrylic shields make it possible for more members to be able to afford a Blade Forum knife then maybe that ought to be taken into consideration.

Not everyone can afford $100 + knives.

GEC makes knives on contract, for SFO and for other forums too, this to me is an indication of competence. I get the feeling that the two Forum Knives made by GEC received far less QC complaints than was the case with Northwoods, Queen or CS for that matter. I don't favour glued in shields on a more costly knife either, inlet and pinning a shield is a sign of craftsmanship.

Nevertheless, if another company (say the revamped Queen--er that sounds odd...) is able to offer specs and the design that is wanted then bravo! This is of course a general airing & discussion thread but we don't need to get bogged down by specifications etc. I would suggest however, that instead of the usual pattern poll that often attracts 'visitors' or bandwagonists trying to be on the winning side, that a Group of Wise Elders select some patterns based on what was popular here, to vote on. We should avoid repeating any of the previous patterns, so this could simplify the process and allow a better chance for a new pattern.

We could also vote say, first of all for one blade or two. Then pattern (which will obviously be simpler) then steel/handles. OK?

Who tooled the Bladeforums tang stamp, and would it be possible to create a smaller version? Dots could be removed from both each year, to keep the "dating" consistent.

Or, would it be possible to have an identifying shield or other marking on a smaller knife in lieu of the tang stamp, some year(s)?

It just seems a shame to be locked into a minimum (larger) knife solely due to the tang stamp.

I would also appreciate a goal of keeping the Forum knife to $100 and under.

I could go along with that.

Yes it is, and on my 500$ and 1500$ knives it is pinned well, seems like folks are trying to keep price down. How much is a pinned shield worth?

Can't actually say. But remember the Forum 11 Knife from GEC had a pinned shield and was under 100USD if I recall. Costs can be kept down by having a single blade or single spring:D

The tang stamp probably can't be made smaller I suppose? But it fitted on the 85 which has a modest tang area, it would fit on a White Owl sized knife for that matter:thumbup:

Thanks Christian. I couldn't remember and couldn't check as I gifted my 2010 knife.

I'd bet that Daniels the current owner of Queen could pin their shields.

If they can close gaps, create "snap," sharpen blades and work with the Forum on pricing, we might be onto something. ;)

(Only half-facetious; the Queen knives I saw in person had the above issues, and they were the ones that hadn't been sent back to Queen by my local retailer....All pre-dating the sale of Queen to the Daniels family.)

All of my references to looking into a Queen made knife have noted the new ownership by Daniels.

Yes, I understand that. However, I don't believe there is yet a consensus (new knives produced and evaluated) regarding quality control issues yet.

We shop around and request quotes from different manufacturers every year....some are interested and some aren't. In the last 2 years, GEC has been exceptional to work with, and they have played an active role in helping to design the knife we are looking for in a price range that worded for the people who were interested in the knife. I have no problem using other companies, but they would have to bring something more to the table than GEC has for me to be thrilled about using someone else.

Of course not but a SFO from Blade Forums members will get extra eyes on attention by Daniels. Let's get back on topic - 2013 Forum Knife - pattern, number of springs, blade, covers, etc. before we or some group decides on who will make it.

I am just hoping for something pocket friendly with a couple of blades. :D
