2013 Forum knife?

I like the idea of a sodbuster, interesting suggestion and something a little different from the ones before, but I imagine I'll be happy whatever way it goes :)

+1 for the Congress Jack. Maybe with some nice wood covers, preferably dark.

I would really like a good wharncliffe with a small secondary.

I really like the idea of a single blade choice, a single blade congress jack or a sodbuster would be good for me. GEC is the only one that offers O1, Queen is the only one with D2 (excluding CSC). GEC already makes the FF tool, I'm guessing that Queen uses D2 on their sodbuster? We don't want to get too exotic, but the only difference would be handle material for GEC. I don't think we want to go the 420 or ATS34 route with Queen.

I've never been a fan of sodbusters, but when it comes to the forum knife, I'm willing to challenge my assumptions! I'm in for one of whatever we come up with.

GEC has made knives with various steels in the past. I'm not sure if they've ever used D2, but they did make a run of some Northwoods branded knives in CPM S60V in 2010 so I think they would be willing to play with using different steels as well, at the very least it can't hurt to ask. I prefer the GEC Farm and Field Bullnose over the Queen Country Cousin Sodbuster for aesthetic reasons. I also MUCH prefer the thin grind that GEC tends to put on their knives.

GEC F&F Bullnose, D2 steel, thin grind, nice wood handles, steel liners/pins...count me in!

I would be on board with this if the can opener were to be replaced with folding scissors.

The world does not need another homage to a tool whose primary purpose has come and gone. Folding scissors are infinitely more useful and more versatile in today's world. There needs to be somebody on this planet other than Victorinox who is willing to drive a traditional pattern forward to keep it relevant in this century. Better yet if they have a legitimate tie to the US camper knives of old.

My recommendation would be to talk to Case. They are already taking tiny steps forward with their Peanut with bail and scissors.

Given a choice between a Case camper and a GEC camper, I would choose the Case, just for the sake on history of the pattern. I also think it would be awesome if this forum prodded Case to update the traditional camper pattern to become something that would actually sell to people other than collectors.

Add the scissors.

Personally, I find a can opener far more useful than a pair of scissors with 1" or less blades. But if you can convince Case to do a 200 piece run of anything for less than $100 per knife, I'll buy two.

I am pretty flexible about pattern choice but I really do think that we should be looking at something that comes in under $100-00 including CONUS shipping. For me the money is not an issue but for many folks it is.

One of the great things about traditionals is their history of affordability. A working man could afford an excellent pocket knife for a very reasonable sum........We should try to emulate that here.

I feel that our forum knife should be available to as many as possible and once you break the $100-00 threshold you reduce affordability.

A single bladed pattern with stainless blade would be great........:)

Steven

I think this is very important. We can have something with a single-blade with decent wooden handles or good micarta that could be affordable and yet have its own identity.

3 points here: 1. I don't think we've yet had a stainless knife. 2. No single blade Forum Knife until now. 3. Micarta would be a new type of handle, woods other than ebony would count as being something new.

A Lambfoot blade would be a very nice alternative to the usual suspects. e.g. on a Sodbuster type or a Barehead Swell End with lined or Rat Tail bolster. A single blade Barehead Saddlehorn would be worthwhile for that matter, I'm sure GEC would take a shot at this pattern.

GEC does wonderful things with 440C.

How about a single-bladed toenail with a 440C blade and wood scales (bocote, grenadilla, bubinga, verawood, etc.). There's a lot of people that have clamored for toenails in.the past, this might make it affordable.

Congress Jacks look good with brown scales too. Note that the Jack actually gets a longer cutting edge into the same frame vs. normal or half Congress.

Would a single blade congress be too weird? Swedged Wharncliff blade? Tortoise shell acrylic?!

I wouldn't buy a camper without the can opener. Being an aircraft mechanic, we utilize can openers every single day. I understand I am in the minority on that point, but if you do away with the can opener, I wouldn't be interested.

I like the look of the two blade congress with a warnie and coping blade. And have it with ivory micarta scales.

I'm a newbie, but I would like to see a large trapper type knife with a lock back skinning blade (for skinning), wharncliffe blade (for processing and food prep), lanyard hole.... and:

1. Stainless Steel with buffalo horn
or
2. Carbon Steel with Stag or even jigged amber bone

It should come with a leather belt sheath.

Back to the forum after a few days, I'm surprised to see this thread, or maybe the title is just wrong, it should be "2014 forum knife" :D but it might be better to discuss the details of the 2013 BF Congress jack first
Oh, and I agree with Frank. Time for a stainless knife as well...

I will follow along and go with the next selection for 2013. One unexpected pleasure I have gotten from Blade forum and Traditional forum knife is trying different patterns that I would have never even thought to try. Thanks for all the work to put it together.

Either that or a sodbuster, looks like. ;)

Yep. I agree with this. Someone mentioned a congress with a spear point blade and a sheepsfoot. Now, I might have to try that one out.
