2013 Forum knife?

I think a sodbuster should definitely go up on the polls. It appears that a lot of others in this thread feel the same way. A sodbuster or bull nose in D2 or O1 steel with micarta, exotic wood, or stag covers for $100 or less would be my first choice.

If we did a D2 or O1 steel with a good G10 (which is more stable and resists submersion better that a lot of micartas) I could definitely go along with that...I have yet to own a GOOD sodbuster.

4" blade would be nice too.

For two years I lobbied for a Congress Jack. My reasons are:

1. It is a very unusual pattern.
2. It's very pocketable.
3. There's no need for any manufacturer to have to redesign much of anything, just hang blades they have on a frame they have.
4. I think two blades is the best overall combination for usefulness.

Problems I have with most patterns are that I can get one anywhere. Taking something normal and putting a BF stamp on it is no big deal. If we come up with something the company can capitalize on okay, that's a little different. I doubt it hurt GEC any at all to use our market research to build a new pattern.

If we're going to go towards a single blade, i like the idea of a Whaler or Rope knife. Preferably with pale (white) bone (jigged would be unusual).

But, just for the record, here's a Congress Jack:

I like that....

I was going to jump on the sodbuster or peanut train, but that congress jack is a beauty!

A Congress Jack would be very nice.

All good choices:

Sodbuster
Congress Jack
Peanut
Back Pocket

I would be happy with any of these.

I like the congress jack idea!

A 5 inch toothpick or coke bottle would be cool!

or a folding hunter!

The Congress Jack came in second last year and should at least be given a spot on the poll list this year. I'd vote for it.

My first thought was this knife from last year. My preference would be with a Spey secondary, but understand and am fine with a majority pen secondary.

My second thought would be a 4-5" cokebottle/toothpick/Yukon Jack- with the cokebottle coming in as the most desirable to me.

A higher end stainless is a great idea, if not CPM then I would hope for at least ATS/154.

I am not a fan of acrylics, and have thought for a while that the forum knife should be in cocobolo or rosewood. A nice traditional cover material that hasn't been used yet. I am not opposed to micarta on a big single blade, as it is a very tough on a long frame. But would much prefer cocobolo or similar wood (perhaps nicer wood to go with cheaper construction of a single blade? Black palm would make me crazy, but that is dreaming).

I'm exited for this year, last year was a bad one and I couldn't afford the forum knife, I wasn't interested in the moose at the time of that offering, and wasn't around this forum for the cannitler (the other designs that interest me now). Hopefully I can get in on my first Traditional forum knife.

I think a EZ open sodbuster in g10 with either damascus steel or 154 steel would be cool.

Just a short memo, this was the congress jack that caught my eye, I posted the same photo last year, comm'on guys :)

This is what I am talking about. BIG knife to slide in the back pocket next to my wallet or carry in a belt case.

The Congress Jack is nice too, but I want a big knife that I would actually carry and use.

I still like the Congress Jack :)
Something about the Congress pattern that goes way back, like the Barlow, to the early days of slipjoint knives. I carry a Congress from time to time and it never fails to do the job I need it to do. Plus it's different from all the forum knives preceding it, and all the major manufacturers have a Congress frame and the blade shapes to make one without retooling.

As much as I would love a Scout, I doubt it could be done within the constraints of time and cost. especially if GEC is the vendor of choice. Schatt has their small Scout which is very nice, but I don't think it would be popular enough.

Just thinking out loud here, pay no mind to me :D

Oh....and Gene....you are doing the artwork again (you're not getting out of it as easy as you thought you would) :)

oh really? that sounded kinda like an order:D we shall see campbell, might be nice to get some new guy or gal in there to keep it fresh...
although ive been plied with guns, knives and alcohol in the past, i'm assuming it'd work again:D (joking)
thanks

As soon as I read congress, I was dead set against it. I am not a fan of that pattern. That congress "jack" however, is quite appealing. Any single blade with a wharncliff/sheepsfoot pattern is great on my list. A peanut might be too small for a lot of people, a large single blade folder would probably be too big (larger than a backpocket, I had one of those Bose 2001 Yukon Hunters and it was massive).

I like Frank's idea of stainless steel, but I would prefer to go with 440C. I guess the closest steel to keep costs low would be Buck's 420HC. A small Buck lockback in the Yellowhorse style would be nice.

This.

I know a lot of folks are not fans of acrylic handles, and I usually am not either, but wouldn't this look nice with GEC's coffee house?

Cocobolo would be sweet too.

And if it is going to have a shield, I would like one in this shape:

I voiced a lot of support for the congress jack last year. I think it's still a great choice.
We done bone and stag quite a few times now. Let's put tortoise shell acrylic covers on this congress jack.

I don't mean to be throwing a curve ball, but what about a nice scout pattern, for a lot of us it was the first knife given to us as a child. GEC already has the parts, could use the #54 frame, large spear blade swedge and long pull, cap-lifter/screwdriver, awl/punch, and if the can opener is not wanted a secondary blade either a small clip, pen or sheepsfoot, with nice bone scales and a bail. Something rugged and classy.

I like the congress and scout idea. I would like to see it made by Canal Street. I also really like the canoe that has been mentioned, especially in abalone.
