2014 BladeForums Knife Gallery

Well I finally was able to find one. This one had quite a bit of blackened area on it when it arrived. I lightly sanded it a bit and really like the look Im getting now. Nice fatty stag which is a must for me! So I just took off some black along the top ridges and left the valleys alone. Later I'm going to add a bit of potassium permanganate to give it more variation. Nice strong pull at around 8. Just a killer Jack knife!

Perry, I came back to this thread again tonight just to ogle your new knife. You were blessed with some super fat slabs on your 2014 forum knife. I love my wasp waisted skinny slabbed 2014 knife, but I must confess that I have always preferred fat slabs on stag handles. You have a beauty there. Congratulations!

Hehe, thank you Scott! Stag can be very dicey sight unseen, but at least I got the chance to see this one before buying. I thought to myself this was the best canidate for a little facelift, to make it mine! I have several sheds laying round the house and always look at them as examples.

Nice knife Perry, looking forward to seeing how the PP works

Wow......... Perry you are a brave man - I think the knife is just beautiful - but its yours and I look forward to seeing you personalise it my friend.

Thanks Jack and Duncan! I'm gonna be careful because it is a nice knife, one of my favorites. Stay tuned!:)

These thick slab looks like they would be good in the hand, fine example indeed. The Forum knives have inevitably been varied but I've yet to see a slouch, very pleased with the one I got.

You could try the tea dye method, stag darkens well with it, but it may pose risks....(like anything);)

Regards, Will

Thank Will, have considered tea or coffee stain but I have a friend that used this potassium permangante with great success. Goes on purple but dries brown in minutes. I'll bet that purple color scares some folks,,,huh? Lol

I have a knife or two that would benefit from PP, I think. Where does one commonly buy it??
I look forward to seeing how your stag comes out, Perry!

Thanks Charlie! You can buy it at many different places online and off. I found it at Amazon, if this is ok to post. Also some hardware stores, of the bigger kind, might carry it. No odor, you don't have to worry about staining the bolsters and shield because the dye only effects organic materials. I will still use gloves though and probably tape off everything just in case. It's a dark powder and a little will go a long way. 1 part PP to 5 parts warm water. And depending on how dark you want the antler, you can always darken as you go. Also I plan on using Qtips for simple application and to get the variations like I want them.

Ok folks, here's the finished photos of my BF Stag Jack, after potassium permanganate was added! goes on easy with a Qtip and dries at just the right speed to watch it as you dye.Think it turned out fine, I didn't want to go too dark for fear of it looking unrealistic. I can always go darker but just not sure, what do you think?

I think it looks GREAT Perry! I do believe that is the same thing I have used on wood to give it a weathered look.
Your forum knife now has a torched stag or an old ivory look to it. It just blends better than the stark white.
Top Shelf!!

Perry, thats a massive improvement - extremely well done! After seeing you do that -I would give you my knife to do next ( if it was not as perfect as it is ).
Excellent stuff.

Perry, that came out excellent! I think I'll be adding some PP to my arsenal.

Superb dye job, Perry!:thumbup: (And splendid photos!)
I don't really know stag. Don't own any, have never held a stag-handled knife; purely "photo knowledge". I thought your original Forum knife looked great, with the dark contrasting with the almost-white. But after seeing the results of your dye "experiment", I think the knife looks even better (way better); it looks like the "old-fashioned" stag coloration I've seen so often in photos.

Great looking job Perry. I really like the way it turned out.
