2014 Canadian Knifemaker Guild Show Review..now with Murray's pics

thanks all!

Thanks Robert, as I had the opportunity to tell you in person I always enjoy your reviews. Its exciting to be in one, that knife of mine sure looks small in your hand.

lol you almost made it into my collection too...it's funny, knifemakers often say to me "i know my knives are not your style.." but you never know! your knife was one of my favourites of the show..i also really liked Steve Vanderkolpf's fixed blade with oosic handle lol

but alas i did not buy any knives although i did place an order ;) and as i posted, got a cool book and shot glasses from Anthony Marfione.

Nice to meet you and thanks for your kind words.
Show was fun and Toronto is a great Town!
Dave

Dave it was great meeting you this weekend. Awesome collection of knives you have, I really enjoyed seeing my first real Loveless. Also thank you very much for taking your time and looking over my knives. I really respect your opinion. Hope to see you again next year.

James

Nice job. My wife has many friends in Hamilton so I am already planning to be there next year. I have never been to a knife show but I would love the opportunity to see a Loveless, let alone touch one. It is only about 4500 km. for me to drive to Toronto so I have to plan ahead.

Looks like it was a great show, I would love to attend one of these days.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Great review as always Robert. Never consider stepping on me as I don't think that way. Actually, most of your images should go to CKG for their site too. I have not spent time editing my images yet except for the 16 knives I did prior to the show as that did not allow much time for me to spend during the Friday evening. I gathered the knives, came home and shot images from 8:30 PM until 2:30AM and slept 3 hours before heading into TO to setup the Canadian display that Wolfe requested I do at this show. I also was busy trying to do some images at the show but you got more than I did as I also was busy buying books that Francesco Pachi created including Wolfe's, one on Glass, FP's personal book of knives and arranging to obtain the book of Swords and the Moran book next year.

Also, my wife and I visited a jewellery store in the Sheraton and purchased a 3 rings (one is mine) and a bracelet for her. We too did not get anything at the show but did take delivery on a couple nice knives from a dealer who attended the show.

Also, we were quite busy as we had Mike Ruth Jr and his wife Susan as guests for about 6 days and we did a lot of visiting around the area including a trip to Niagara Falls and then a tour of Toronto and the Islands as well as the Aquarium and CN Tower.

James has a thread based on the knife of his I photographed prior to the show so folks can view that thread too.

Thanks again for doing a great job even though we did not have time to chat at all.

thanks Murray...glad you also had a good time and managed to make some good purchases.

RL

Thanks Robert for taking the time to take these photos and posting them. Next best thing to being there. I attended one of the very early shows in the late seventies. I remember Loerchner and Butler showing their wares and Maxwell.... I wouldn't scheduling a Toronto visit around the next show in 2015. Love your bling..;)

Rather than starting a fresh thread, I trust RL will be ok with these images done during the wee hours prior to the beginning of the show so makers and CKG would have images of some knives and yet have them available at showtime.

This one is the CKG Collaboration which RL showed and has an image of the makers of this raffle piece. Not sure who won it however but maybe Kathy or Brian Tighe can respond.

The next three folders are all from Des Horn

James Emmons has his own thread with this knife but here it is once more

Mike Ruth Jr. brought this one with Chocolate Mammoth which was superb

Paul Savage created this fine piece with damascus which took him 16 hours to produce when asked by Mike Ruth about it and garnered a response that "it would take me two weeks". Many congrats to Paul.

Steven Vanderkolff showed off this interesting pattern for a dagger so I emphasized that in the image.

The rest will be in the next post due to space

lets continue with 5 knives by Peter Hammer who as you know from RL will be moving from Brazil to Toronto and will be opening a Bladesmithing school. Nice to have a couple of new knife related ventures in the TO area now that Hacher & Krain who offer Seth Cosmo knives in their store on Dupont St.

Next is the Blade 2014 Best of Show knife -- an no horsing around won this award

We follow this up with two by Wolfe. The first is one he created for CKG and was a hidden auction piece (as was the last piece). This knife garnered a very generous benefit to the organization in addition to being a wonderful knife.

the last item was a knife created for this show offered by Wolfe.

If I get the time perhaps some of the images taken at other times will be added but RL has done a great job of showing the flavor of the 2014 CKG knife show.

Thank you for posting RL and Murray. The show was a success for makers and collectors. We have already completed arrangements for next years show in the same location. It will be slightly larger.

In addition we will be sponsoring an "open" spring show at the old location on the airport strip. At this show tables are available to both, Guild members and non members.Factory and and antique knives will be permitted.

For more info. see: http://canadianknifemakersguild.com/show-info/

Murray great pics as always!! maybe next time you should set up a booth at the show like a few years ago..that was a great combined review we did..thanks for all the mentions.

wolfe, great job!

RL -- better for me to do it this way. I am not in business as I retired almost 15 years ago and love it. Phyllis can't keep the table alone if Wolfe wants me to a display at another time as I certainly can do a totally different display which might include some of what was shown this year but would have other knives if I did one on Art knives or on Forged Blades etc. Also, I don't want to be dragging my equipment around and also CKG would not want to pay for another room as well as I still enjoy attending the show and who knows what might catch our fancy next time. I have some new things this year of which I have only ever posted 2 items and have a couple more in transition so maybe before years end I will show them too. Next year may not be so busy if I don't have someone staying as we had fun with the Ruth's and showing them around TO and area.

Wolfe -- I trust you got the message I sent with the link to the DropCanvas site and were able to download the images. I am doing other images but will get to the CKG ones that I have done and you could harvest RL's from this thread and put both sets onto the CKG site or those which you want to use.

Murray i could try to share my fototime album, it would probably be easier for Wolfe to get them that way..just send me an email address to where i should direct the link.
