2014 Canadian Knifemaker Guild Show Review..now with Murray's pics

Robert: I always enjoy every image you take, and appreciate your time posting. Look at how many views you have garnished!

Wolfe: It looks like you helped direct the best CKG show yet. Good for you, good for Canada, good for knife lovers EVERYWHERE!

Murray: Great captures. You showed us many facets and made the knives elicit desire. :D

Sounds like you were called in at the 11th hour? Francesco P. was listed as Show Photographer?

Good thread.

Coop

Thanks Coop -- I had always been suggested as photographer by Wolfe when things began which was nice. I don't do this to earn $ and offer the service to CKG as my part of continuing to support Canada and Canadian knifemakers which I have done for 34 years now. At the last moment due to some cancellations, I was asked to display Canadian knives and did have 4 cases of 50 knives by a number of makers. I don't know if I will be needed next year for a display but will do the photos but am always glad to see RL doing his coverage. We are friends but have different collecting goals so there is no competition and we both enjoy doing what we do. If I do display next year, maybe I will do a display of Art Knives although I can do forged knives and also various aspects of types of knives depending upon how much space is available. Hopefully folks will continue to check out this thread as I am busy working on my images from that weekend and will be posting as soon as I can.

Thank you for the time and the effort in taking the photographs and writing. I know it takes a lot of time and it is much appreciated.

Great to see all of these images. Thanks, guys!

Next year . . .

A small correction . . .

Next is the Blade 2014 Best of Show knife -- an no horsing around won this award

medium800.jpg
.

It is a beautiful creation which I really admired at Blade, but actually, that knife won Best Art Knife at Blade, not Best of Show. There is another picture of this knife, taken by Eric Eggly, in the November 2014 Blade Magazine, along with pictures of the other award winners from Blade 2014.

I have a good memory, just short like my hair so thanks for updating the award.

As do so many shows, the action can often take place in the lobby of the hotel and this years CKG hosting venue, Sheraton Centre, across from Toronto City Hall was no different.
medium800.jpg

Just one image to give a bit of flavor showing Steve d'Lack who did so much to help sponsor and promote the show with Emanuel Esposito relaxing.
medium800.jpg

The real action started Friday evening as RL has reported and created lots of great image but here will be a few taken before having to leave to photograph some 15 makers knives before show opening and doing a display of 50 knives by Canadian makers.

Kirby Lambert and others pick up exhibitor packages and prepare for a pleasant evening of drinks and food at this fine venue of the Sheraton Centre.
medium800.jpg

James Emmons has seen it all (lol) but Paul Savage is intently looking at and discussing knives.
medium800.jpg

Ed Wormser (left) discusses knives with Owen Wood while someone who hopefully can be identified examines one of Owens knives.
medium800.jpg

once we get identification, this photo will be complete with Michael Donato and his cousin who I simply call "Vin Diesel".
medium800.jpg

Kirby Lambert did not take too long in finding the food table and looks to be enjoying his evening.
medium800.jpg

Peter Hammer (right) has a perpetual grin and my friend Jose de Braga always is happy when at a knife show.
large.jpg

Emanuel and Ed are having a very serious knife discussion but then again, knives are always serious and are part of any knife show discussion.
medium800.jpg

Christophe Derringer and Paul Shindler are enjoying some relaxation time before getting a bit of shut eye before a busy day on Saturday.

medium800.jpg

Two artists, engraver Amayak Stepanyan and Japanese knifemaker. Koji Hara would naturally have lots to discuss.
medium800.jpg

With that I will continue later on.

BTW, any further/better pictures of the Steigerwalt and Lerch knives would be especially appreciated! :D

hopefully I will be able to accommodate you V.

Lets proceed to the show held during Saturday and Sunday. The knife to which The Virginian referred was on Stephanie Lemelin's table and available.
medium800.jpg

additionally, Stephanie has a very nice pendant and chain which now resides around Phyllis' neck, just part a number of new pieces of jewellery she was able to acquire over the weekend.
medium800.jpg

Sharla Hanson is see here with an interested collecter in their very eye catching folding dagger.
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

and a sale of this fine piece was made -- Shaun, the joint creator is here with the knife in hand
medium800.jpg

Rod Olson, (seated) had a nice array of fine folders and is seen here as Rod Cook and Larry Danielkiewkz chat with Francesco Pachi.
medium800.jpg

a better view of the folders
medium800.jpg

As one can see, Peter Hammer is smiling and so he should having sold eleven knives over the weekend.
medium800.jpg

All the way from Italy came Paolo Brignone with some interesting knives
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

Here, Owen Wood shows the videographer one of the fine folders he offered at the show
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

and
medium800.jpg

Nathan Knowles brought his usual fine creations
medium800.jpg

Many collectors and makers stopped by to see the knives from our collection -- 50 by a variety of makers.
medium800.jpg

Owen Wood discusses one of Mike Ruth Jr. knives which we bought in 2011 atade show as James Emmons listens and learns
medium800.jpg

collectors spend some time looking at Mikes current and past work
large.jpg

Mike Mossington who generally has many supplies available to makers, had a few tables full of knives he has created
medium800.jpg

Kirby Lambert returns a knife to a collector. Collectors love to chat with makers all the time regarding their and others creations.
medium800.jpg

Emanuel Esposito chats with a collector as does his wife, Elizabeth in the background
medium800.jpg

Here are a couple of knives offered by EE.
large.jpg

Elizabeth talks to a collector about the knives she creates and one offered for sale
medium800.jpg

which was purchased by Dave Ellis' wife.
medium800.jpg

Eugene Shadley is a master of the traditional folder and seems to have added some simple axes to his offerings.
medium800.jpg

large.jpg

Francesco Pechi offered books that show the incredible talent as a photographer that he possesses. While expensive both Phyllis and I are glad to have Wolfe's book, FP's book of knives as well as his book on Glass. We already owned the book about James Schmidt and next year will obtain the Bill Moran book as well as the book of swords that Francesco has completed. One can't own all the knives but these images are powerfull and well done it is as though one could reach out and touch the knives.
medium800.jpg

Francesco loves knives and made many fine ones of his own so handling and talking about knives and photography just is natural for him among the crowd of collectors gathered at his table.
medium800.jpg

Gaetan Beauchamp is a wonderful maker and scrimshander (Phyllis has a nice pendant he did many years ago)
medium800.jpg

and today is no exception with wonderful scrimshaw and knives offered
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

end part 4

these went to a collector who will certainly enjoy using them at a dinner party
medium800.jpg

Earlier there were 3 knives by Des Horn and this shows an array of folders he offered
medium800.jpg

Dave Ellis spends a lot of time talking about and advocating Custom knives to potential purchases
medium800.jpg

Michael Donato and he exchange info about knives and makers
medium800.jpg

Makers and collectors often look for supplies and other items of interest and what better opportunity than when Culpepper is in the venue? Although the wallet became depleted, I did add a nice Ray skin wallet which now matches on Phyllis has owned for a few years.
medium800.jpg

French knifemaker, Charlie Bennica always has finely crafted folders with once in a while a fixed blade and this show was no different.
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

collectors just can't put them down
medium800.jpg

Mathew Lerch has become one of the most sought after makers in recent years. He had some nice work presented at his table.
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

For me, Mark Daley was a new maker on the Canadian scene with some nicely embellished tacktical styled blades
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

Koji Hara never disappoints collectors as his creations are always top drawer and he has lots of items to choose from
medium800.jpg

he just loves to work with various colors of Pearl
medium800.jpg

and Abalone
medium800.jpg

Another fine knifemaker who has adapted, changed and improved over the years is Ken Steigerwalt who offers some amazing knives for collectors.

medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

Jose de Braga never fails to create many masterpieces that collectors simply cannot pass up.
medium800.jpg

A couple of his were part of the Canadian collection we showed over the weekend which were purchased a few years back and part of one of the books created by David Darom.
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

a closer look at Jose's knives
medium800.jpg

he is again all smiles
large.jpg

and he is even offering jewellery
medium800.jpg

Hacher & Krain brought knives that they sell from a Toronto location made by BC knifemaker, Seth Cosmo Burton who specializes in using knives with many of them being kitchen knives.
medium800.jpg

The second from the right is one I have now for carry when attending a nice steakhouse or other restaurant. Just awaiting the sheath that their sheathmaker said he would include with the purchase. Maybe tomorrow.
medium800.jpg

Master Engraver Amayak Stepanyan had a couple of interesting pieces available
medium800.jpg

xlarge.jpg

and is seen here with Christophe Derringer and the video man
medium800.jpg

Alain Desaulniers always has interesting hunters and fighters and this event was no exception
medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

medium800.jpg

The dealer for Suchat knives was in attendance

medium800.jpg

and had provided a knife for raffle (don't know the winner but maybe Wolfe will contribute a name)
medium800.jpg

the bottom knife called the swan was one I had intended to pick up depending upon its cost but what with all the other purchases we had made it slipped my mind and likley my pocket book also but it may be something for the future
medium800.jpg

The winner of the Wolfe CKG knife and one of the Wolfe books to purchase (David Dupuis who has some of the knives he once owned in the book)
medium800.jpg

This year the CKG created an award in honor of one of the founders of CKG who passed a way a few years ago -- John Freeman. The initial and well deserved recipient and great friend of Wolfe is see here with both Wolfe and John's wife. The CKG initial winner of the John Freeman Memorial Award -- ROD COOK.

medium800.jpg

Hopefully between the images by RL and these all the collectors that frequent BFC will enjoy the opportunity to view the flavor and the knives at the Summer 2014 CKG show which will return to the Sheraton Centre in 2015. Now when are the Pan AM games?? For those interested in an extended vacation, some on to Toronto July 10 - July 26, 2015 and stick around for the CKG show in August.

Nice! Thanks for the view :)

This has been an enjoyable visit. BTW: I"ve already laid hands on Mark Daley's knives, along with some others acquired at this show. You will see, soon.
