2014 Forum Knife

Some really good ideas floating around. Not that anybody cares what the newer guy in this sub section thinks but I'll chime in anyways. I really like the ld bidea of a micarta shadow. If this happens you can count me in on 2 for sure.

Anybody want to fill me in on who is orginizing this or if it's just talk at the moment? Don't have time at the moment to read all the posts.

So...did we decide it's a sodbuster this year?:D On a serious note, it seems that the best solution is just a few of the established and long time contributing members of the traditionals forum should pic out the pattern, options and manufacturer then fill us in on the choice, price and ETA. People are either in or out and put their money up. Maybe easier said than done of course.

+1 Sounds fair to me

I've gotten most of the forum knives except the first and the second to last, wasn't really around yet for the first, and the second to last was just a knife that didn't do it for me at a time when I was a might tight on funds anyway. That said, I'll probably pick up one of whatever we decide on. Shadow or barehead in micarta sounds good to me. I have to be the odd man out and say that the peanut and soddy ideas don't do much for me, I'd probably be more likely to go for the soddy of the two but just kind of unexcited about either. The slim trapper would certainly perk up my interest more, or some of the other ideas like the barlow etc. The TL-29 mentioned earlier in the thread I'd be all over that, sounds pretty nice.

Agreed.

I love the fact that there already a plan in place, I don't believe that anyone of the previous committee members has volunteered their time, till there's a body of individuals willing to put themselves through this again this thread is an exercise in a fantasy knife.

Last time Kevin along with the members that prepaid put up a lot of money, IIRC it was over $30,000 add to that the headaches Kevin had between moving and family issues and he still got them out, the memory is still fresh I'm sure and with all the things he's got on his plate I'd be surprised to see him sponsor this year's knife but ya never know.

If you guys really wanna see this happen I'd hammer out the committee and financial details before picking patterns because without the committee to run this we're just building a fantasy knife and if this is the crux of this thread we should pull all the stops and make the knife we all want.

I'd start a thread looking for volunteers first and make sure it's people who have done this before and are willing to commit to doing this again. You can't get a knife built by a bunch of people saying, "I'll do what ever I can to help, just let me know what I can do." As well meaning as they can be it takes a lot of work and time not to mention experience, so for you new guys that think this is like ordering a custom iPhone from the internet, it's far from it.

I'm not trying to be a bummer, just a voice of reason trying to point this in a direction that might bear some fruit.

Garbage in garbage out... Need a plan and some people dedicated to that plan and obviously someone with clout to get it out! So far just a bunch of rambling going on.

Just a quick comment. If and when, with the emphasis on if, a forum knife happens the process will be initiated by the forum moderators. All the behind the scenes things need to be resolved first, if they can be, before a committee is selected and the process started.

I'm going to stump for a Texas jack or a GEC 66 jack with BF tang stamp and a nice shield with an appropriate cover material. The 2013 knife was very nicely done and executed. I think it wasn't as popular as expected for the same reasons that a commercial version of it is not currently on the market, whatever those reasons might be.

A two blade stockman or jack would be something I would participate in. GEC's "Improved Trapper" is another pattern I'd like and, as I have said before, the knife that I was hoping we'd get for the 2012 forum knife.

I think we do need to get a limited run of a standard production knife rather than have GEC or someone else design and build a "new to them" pattern in a limited number as I think it runs the cost up to the point folks don't want to get up off their wallet to buy one. None of this should be taken as sniping at GEC as they have been great to give us what we said we wanted as a group.

I didn't spring for the 2011 knife as I wasn't, at that time, interested in the pattern. Sometimes it takes time for people to "warm up to" a pattern; we've probably all seen that within our own personal experience. I know I have.

Fingers crossed.

Might as well lock the thread until there's a decision whether there will actually be a 2014 forum knife. Otherwise it will just be a "post your personal wish list knife" thread with no particular purpose.

I was thinking a spring loaded self expanding stem bolt with a detachable Rotating kaniffelling pin. Anodized neon pink and green of course.......

My first choice would be a Case Sodbuster; that being the case, I would be most amenable to a Keith Johnson Sway Back; of course, it might cost a bit more....

If the OP wants to lock it, that's his prerogative. I don't see any reason to lock it.

Fair enough, then.

I'd second TLARbb's interest in a medium sized Jack. I'd love to see a new run of the GEC #66 pattern, whether it be from a forum knife, a SFO, or just another production run. I'd prefer clip main with a straight-edged secondary. I don't have many knife purchases in me this year, so I'll only be buying something where I want the particular knife, and at a price point I'm willing to pay.

Is there a reason the concept knife can't be decided on and then get the orders paid for in advance? I'm just a new guy here but that seems like common sense to me. You post some photos, drawings, specs, etc. of the 2014 model once the czart, or committe decides what it is. Pricing and all the necessaries are then done and post it up for sale.
Personally, If I wanted to be in for the knife, I could then pay for one, and wait. If I wanted it and was willing to pay for it, and it was a "collector" or user, (and I wanted to support our forum)why would it matter if it took a few months or longer to get produced? This way, whoever sponsors the build is not out of pocket on serious cash and hoping to have enough sales to cover it in the end.

If only it were that simple but I bet if you queried the previous coordinators of the previous years knives they'd say different. :)

With all that said part of the fun in getting previous years knives done was the campaigning by the various members to get their choices picked. It was agonizing for many of the members I'm sure but for me that was most of the fun.

I'm in for what ever comes down the pike, at this point I'd hate to have an incomplete set...:)
