2014 Forum Knife

But that was the point when we started this, it was the making of our own knife an engraved is just that. Speaking for myself money wasn't the issue as much as it being different, (nowadays the money is more an issue but I do what I have to do gather the funds, I've started already, the nickel and find as up :) ) any time you try to get more one person to agree on something there's always gonna be someone that's not completely happy.

It's that happy medium we try to get to unfortunately the more people involved, the longer it's gonna take, maybe a knife every other year might be the answer but with the cost of production prices can change drastically in two years and the people who paid when the cost was 15% less aren't gonna wanna pony up the extra money.

Maybe a small fixed blade sheath knife, this could probably be done fairly cheap, it's something we haven't done yet and we could have a small sheeps foot or wharncliff for those that prefer a pointier blade. We k might even be able to get one of our own members to make it, water jet the blades and all they gotta do is the bevel, edge and scales, (I know that's still a lot of work).

So long as there's interest, there's hope. :)

from the BFC trad. Forum Art/label monkey…
to be quite honest last year was a rough enough ride that i won't likely go on that ride again, would take some arm twisting. already had 2 members contact me about the passing of the torch for label art, in the off chance a '14 goes forward. I really wish anybody luck if they step up to do it
Fun while it lasted
Gene

PS i had it easy compared to the guys that did the heavy lifting getting those done

Thank You Gene for all the YEARS of art work that you provided for us here at the Traditional Forum!
I for 1 (and I know there are many more) really appreciate all the work you put in with never a thought of monetary gain for yourself.
It is this man's kind of selflessness & generosity that makes this forum GREAT!!

Agreed Dave it's because of people like him, you and all the others that made it look so easy, I was looking at the evolution of the art work and it only became ours when he did the art work, before that it was just an SFO in their box, the last three knives and the packaging will always mean the most to me, they are irreplaceable and because of his art work even more valuable to me. :)

Last year, it required 50% down to start, and 125 pre-orders. That means someone else later had to pick up the other 50%, so I'm guessing that was Spark.

I would have thought that 50% of the final price of this knife more than covered what GEC required to start work. I think it makes sense to pay in advance, but if people are doing that, they ought to get a better price IMO. The pricing seemed to be rather abitrary to me last year. Collectively, we have huge buying power, but I don't think that has been used to the advantage of ordinary members.

Collectively 200 is not huge buying power to he honest. 2000 maybe, not 200. 500 is the starting number for other knife companies. That's not for a discount, just to get in the game. Remember you are not ordering a production model, you are commissioning a new piece.

The only problem with prepay is how long it takes to get up the prerequisite monies to manufacture, we had a lot of flack when the one year the knife didn't ship till after January keeping people who prepaid for 2 or 3 content for a year till it ships could become problematic.

I like the pay to vote concept, if you've got 50% of the knife paid for odds are you'll be in it to the end.

Ted it is the only real way to get people to commit.

You prepay $50-00 which is non-refundable before the knife is chosen (unless the knives do not get made.) Then, when we have a final tally, we approach GEC and ask them what they can do for us. We now have the exact number of knives we need to make and the funds in place.

Those folks who prepaid get one vote per knife ordered to choose the pattern/options. Once chosen we require the balance of payment and get GEC going.

If you do not pay the balance owing you forfeit your $50 and it reduces everyone else's bill, or you can sell your place in the line.

If you do not like the knife chosen you are still obligated to buy it and you can sell it on the exchange or you can sell your place in the line. (I have yet to see a forum knife for sale that lasted longer than 24 hours on the exchange before being sold)

I am sure that we will have 80 takers. I will commit to buying three right now, so only 77 to go.

I really do not think that making people wait is a huge issue. We can ask everyone who buys to agree to the fact that they may have wait up to 12 months before they get their knife. Remember that with no extra knives being made these will be very collectable.

If I can help in any way I am happy to do so. Alas I am on the wrong side of the planet for any meaningful assistance.

I am still for a Viper pattern. Would be the first swayback, and I think it would look fantastic in American Elk.

Established pattern should make it cheap enough even with the premium covers.

Do we have any volunteers yet? Looks like we could start organizing this provided we have a trusted member here to start working on this...

Last year's knife was a major pain in the derriere for the mods and the design team, both on the forum and behind the scenes. The path forward on this year's knife has a major additional roadblock compared to the previous two years. I will not elucidate on that at this time.

However, I will talk to Gary this week and discuss whether we want anything to do with such a thing.

Quoted in case anyone missed what is perhaps the most important post in the thread.

Actually, folks missed the last half of my first paragraph, which was the actual important part. Gary's post was more on point.

Just a quick comment. If and when, with the emphasis on if, a forum knife happens the process will be initiated by the forum moderators. All the behind the scenes things need to be resolved first, if they can be, before a committee is selected and the process started.

Behind the scenes activity is occurring. But nothing is worked out yet.

I think some of the confusion with this thread is in the title, it looks like there is a '14 knife in process there are already half a dozen or so pre sold.

There is no knife in the makings, there is no committee, this thread is gonna be 10 pages of people saying they're in and what they want. No disrespect to the op but maybe change the title to "...what would it take to be able to make another forum knife this year." That would be less likely to be misunderstood. ;) JMHO.

Sorry. I understand what the thread is about and that ot may not happen. I am just voicing that I am in support of it, and I trust the fine gentlemen in charge (of they choose to be). I hope it happens, but I can see why ot would not and how diffixult it would be to appease the shouting mob. :)

I'm not singling out anybody I'm just expressing my opinion on what I think is about to become a very confusing and off topic thread, I made comments to about what I'd like to see and what I thought might alleviate some of the issues I just don't want to see this thread get so bogged down with order commitments, the more people see it in print/type the more it reinforces the idea, many people are just gonna open post without reading the whole thread, I've done this myself on long threads but usually I won't post till I've read the thread or most of it. (I've seen threads flip 180° and back in tone from the bottom of one page to the top of the next)...

I'm no mod and I don't wanna over step any boundries so I'm going to stick to reading more and posting less in this thread. :)
