2014 G.E.C. RENDEZVOUS, Who's Coming ?

I asked this same question a few pages back. Sucker rod these days is made of steel, about 20 ft long and screw together for whatever depth the oil formation is at. So they go down a long way, thousands of feet. They are attached to the pumping unit, that goes up & down, and brings the oil to the surface, in the same way a water wind mill operates.
The only thing I can figure is the oil in The Queen City was very close to the surface back in those days and they didn't have to connect any lengths of rod together. Even still I find it interesting that they used wood for any portion of the oil well system. I just wouldn't think it would hold up.

Dave

As for the wood type Christine at GEC told me they think the wood might be ash.

If you ever get to Titusville ,I suggest a trip to the Drake Museum. They show a film about the origin of the oil wells and have a lot ,a lot of interesting exhibits and artifacts.

Drake was hired to drill the well by a businessman from the Pittsburgh area I think ,who was mining salt.It took him about a year to find the pool of oil, they begin calling the venture Drakes folly.

What do you think the main need for the oil was?????

You did manage to pick up a sucker rod one-hander. Good on you!! I'm happy I was able to get one as well--definitely unique--and I see that yours is #16. 4 squared is a great number--must be lucky. :)

The 16th is my birth date. I was in line early on the second day to get it!

Thanks for the sucker rod info/oil info, Bob, Dave and Lyle!

My guess is oil-fired steam engines, heating and machinery lubrication if they were able to refine it effectively.

Light, according to the Museum. It was very beneficial to industries, allowing more ease of a night shift.

Sliders Cory, they used all the chickens back then for chicken and dumplings.:)

The last package I forwarded to myself appeared, and included a rare button.
One of the staff, who shall remain nameless, slipped me her Staff badge as we folded up the tents!
Also in the pic is a test "US flag" button, and one button Sue made for me to wear so I could remember who I was!
The frisson of delight still lingers - it was not a big show, but it was a great show!

So dumb question...... Did all the "beerlows" and "beer scouts" get picked up? I was talking to a distributor and he thought some were left.

Good stuff, Charlie! I like that US Flag button.

Here are my buttons, and my non-Charlie GEC knife, from the week end:

Absolutely. I'm enjoying a brief lull for the first time since the Rendezvous, and my appreciation of the goodness of my time with all of you is only growing upon further reflection.

Thank you, and GEC, for such generous good company.

I was told I bought the last bone Sheepsfoot Scout with a caplifter, and that there were no more Sunbrite iterations available by the time the event concluded.

... That Sunbrite continues to beckon and haunt-- and I don't usually gravitate towards acrylic. One of these days/knives.

I was told last week by Chris, Sales Manager for GEC, that ALL the Rendezvous Special Knives were long gone from the Factory. It is possible, but highly doubtful, that a Distributor might have one available.

I didn't think there were any left. But after the email I figured I would ask those that were there.

I suspect the Radio/Beer Scouts will reappear in Jan. or Feb.
That is when GEC will set up for #15 patterns again, to the best of my knowledge . . . .
But what do I know??

Works both ways!!

Nice button collection, ~P!;) I suspect we will see a few more from GEC. They are having fun with them!

I mailed off my Sunbright BeerBoy :), and had an immediate pang of regret:(!
But I am sure it will be appreciated!

January is going to be a very exciting (and expensive) month :)

Can't wait to see what covers they and the Charlows will have. I know Charlie mentioned jigged bone as one.

Okay, OKAY! I guess Charlie and Sarah got more buttons than I did. It was nice of Patti to give you her "Staff" button after beating you so bad at Corn Bag Toss Sarah. :D :D But I got the last #15 Tom's Choice Barlow in 3rd Cut Stag!

Yes, she truly trounced me. :o

I hope to give her more of a challenge next year. I'd never played before, and am now seriously considering acquiring a game set-- it's fun. :) [I have no illusions about beating Patti, but I'd like it to be more of a contest. :).]

As for the Staff button, I think I woulda had to have beaten her to get hers. Someone else winkled this button away and gave it to me; I'm not sure whose it was(!).

I'm going to wear it next year, and see if I can "blend." Heh.
