2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

This thread has 28 pages, which is a little too long to read
Could someone offer a synopsis and explain what direction we are heading

Thanks

Charlie, Barry, and Liam have offered their services as per last year.

Is it me or a watch pockets on jeans much smaller nowadays? How about something in the 3.25-inch range? I also like the idea of smooth, undyed bone.

It's definitely not just you and I've noticed some brands are better than others when it comes to the watch pocket size. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I've actually not bought jeans before because the watch pocket was worthless. She gave me the weirdest look like she was trying to decide if I was messing with her or not lol.

Not many carried pocket watches over the past 70+ years. But now, vests/waistcoats are more popular than ever, perhaps because pocket watches are back in fashion, and watch pockets are not big enough to actually hold a watch.

I think my watch pockets are not big enough to hold even a peanut. But a peanut or peanut-sized knife would make a great forum knife. If we can't manage a screwdriver/caplifter. :D

Here's my grandaddy's little jack from around 1940, synthetic covers. I don't recall ever seeing anything so small from GEC.

FG & GSJ, IIRC one of the prerequisites is that it has to be US made unless that had changed. BTW, Hungary has a really great knife community, with most of the country being farmland or mining they have had a need for carrying a pocket knife as a daily need, for work and for eating. One of the people responsible for creating the European cutlery industry outside of Sheffield was a Cutler named Josef Sziraki way back in the 1800s he was making intricate pocket knives using the best materials available.

While we're dreaming, I'd love to see a global knife series, knives representative of every country/culture out there, we could spend years on China and Pakistan alone ;). BTW I do like the Rough Rider China made knives and even though Taylor Brand bought out the Schrade name I have to give them both kudos for bringing back many lost or discontinued patterns that new folks to the hobby might never be able to otherwise get their hands on.

Had anyone considered a mini doctor pattern with coffin bolsters?

I like the mini coffin doctor idea. And a 👍 for the Hungary mention.

Ted, I'm not sure if 'must be American' was one of the stipulations, but it makes absolute sense to me given this is an American forum. :)
And to be fair, America does seem to have a wider range of patterns than any other country. :D

Don't shoot me Meako! But I reckon we'll be in this phase a while yet. ;)
Would be easier to choose at home. As far as I know, the only 2 pocket knives ever produced in Oz are the rabbit knife & a very few of the British military pattern? Either of which are rarer than than an Eastern Brown in a good mood, anyway. ;)
I know but it's fun to have a dig and slap the reins. By August I'll get the spurs on.:D
I have 3 knives with "TOLEDO AUSTRALIA" stamped on them. Think they were a tool and die maker at Tempe in Sydney.?

Thank you for saving 28 pages of reading!
No consensus of a knife pattern?

You're welcome! :D

No, not at all. I'm sure Team Charlie will come up with something nice :)

Hmmm..... Something along the lines of a #15 or #77 with a Sheepsfoot single or main in a two blade....

No!! You have it wrong!! You are supposed to vote for the PunchNut!! Not a screwdriver/cap lifter!! That's so pedestrian, so 2009 (or whenever the cap lifter was done). Now get in line for the PunchNut or an Eureka stockman/Whittler with a punch!!

(Totally kidding and tongue in cheek, I would actually like a swayback/Norfolk/tuxedo kind of frame, but the 'Nut is so popular that I'm okay with really any small frame pattern - but still pushing my punch agenda so others will push Charlie towards the same conclusions!!).

Glad to see the dream thread is still moving along!!

If I was Charlie I'd pick a single spring Texas Jack so he doesn't have to make 'em as an SFO.

But since he's too much of a gentleman to do that, he'll go with a single spring based on the Erickson I posted because it's beautiful, useful, and you don't need to put your glasses on to find it (like a peanut).

Love this idea. That or just do the 2011 knife again so I can buy one.

Sorry, new guy question, is the forum knife available to anyone who wants to buy one?

I would love it if GEC made a peanut, but with no half stop, maybe it is just me but it is the half stop that seems to bite me most often. This little Pemberton is a great knife let down for me by its half stop.

I like the Pemberton myself. Thicker than a Peanut and not a nail breaker. Takes a great edge. One of these with a Sheepsfoot main blade? A single blade, or a punch secondary? For something different, a good acrylic for the scales?
