2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

Oh, someone would go and show a sweet Barlow Case. I really have a love affair with them. But gotta say that the CSC sample is downright sexy also. Would snap it in a heartbeat. But for functionality, would love the second blade to be a punch. It would be unique and very functional at the same time.

As for those clamouring for bolsters, consider this: no Forum Knife has been in Shadow form before, bolsters add weight, bolsters are dead common and this long sleek knife looks a lot better without them! The Bird's eye pivots give it appeal and strength aplenty.

Good points I think, it's worth looking at the bigger picture

Carbon steel with a traditional blade finish please :)

I really like the CSC entry. But, I'm very curious to see if Case actually comes through and what that offering might be.

I really like the updated design of the blade configuration. Great job Eric. I think that this knife needs to remain bolsterless to keep it's sleek profile. I'd lament the loss of the birdseye pins also. I've seen similar designs with tip bolsters however, and I think that could be a workable compromise.

Eric. could you explain the difficulties of incorporating sunk joints into this pattern? That would really set the pattern apart and enhance it's sleekness.

Bill, sunk joints would require at the very least a complete re-design of the blades, and likely the hole locations in the scales would have to be re-configured as well. A serpentine pattern like this isn't really conducive to sunk joints unless you don't mind two very narrow (back to edge) blades such as say a muskrat blade. You can't use a wide blade because you'd wind up with the edge slapping the spring before the blade is even seated. A scale profile such as a sleeveboard, congress, and possibly a wharncliffe pattern would be more adaptable to sunk joints.

Eric

Many thanks for your clear explanation Eric! Please don't take me wrong, the knife you designed is terrific as is and I'm sure all involved appreciate the effort you made to bring it to us. I really like the fact that you are representing your company here on the forum. Thanks again.

What about a single spring with a main blade and a cap lifter? Then everyone is happy. Small, thin knife that does everything you need.

I'm still lobbying for the cap lifter too. It was mentioned that it's been done before. Okay, it was done once in '09 IIRC. Also, if they weren't super popular, you'd see a few of them on the secondary market. I've only ever seen one.

I personally have no need or desire for a caplifter on a knife. I believe that a second blade is a better use of the space, plus we are wanting somthing new and different I believe:)
I really like the offering that is currently proposed, and am excited to see what Case will offer as well!

Amen Ernie, please no caplifters, leather punches, scissors, etc. That's a great design Eric came up with. Let's see what the other makers offer but I think they will have to up
their game to match this. Carbon steel, nice wood a real traditional gem

I agree, there's plenty of bottle-openers around as it is on 15s. The Forum Knife from 2011 had one anyway. A lifter/screwdrive type 'blade' may well have to be of thicker stock than an ordinary secondary blade proper, and this would compromise the single-spring arrangement, it's no easy task nesting blades into a single area.

Even if this does not become the Forum Knife 15, I would want one of these updated CS Shadows in wood or micarta for sure! And I suspect I am not alone.....:D:thumbup::thumbup:

Regards, Will

You aren't Will

You'd never guess HS, that quote (above) is from several pages back! :D It is certainly not the case that "everyone would be happy" with a single-spring knife with a cap-lifter as this year's forum knife (though I like my Vic Bantam well enough). The 2011 knife had a cap-lifter, that's pretty recent I think, and there are numerous other patterns available with cap-lifters for those, like me, who have a use for one. We've always tried to have something different in the forum knife, and much as you might want a cap-lifter, it ISN'T different. Fashions are fleeting, and the current popularity of cap-lifter patterns, should not, in my opinion, be the basis for deciding a pattern for the 2015 forum knife

Late here but I very much like the CSC prototype. I'd prefer sub 4" but would gladly shell out no matter. It's just unique across a number of aspects, and I just think that should be a consideration for a special annual run for an esteemed group such as ourselves. I appreciate the Barlow, but there have just been a plethora of offerings over the past few years.

We'll see what comes down the pike...

Peter

I agree with oldtymer, I agree with Will and I agree with Jack.

Well said all of you :)
