2015 NorthEast Beckerhead Gathering. Oct 9-11.

I'm in for saturday unless something goes really wrong. My Mom's not doing well, so that could go agley-but otherwise I'm in.

Pork loin
Burgers and dogs
Bacon eggs sausage
Kale smoothies?
Getting really excited.

i certainly hope to make a day / evening / overnite but travel plans and so much busy, i'm going insane thinking about it - Oct is busy...

Kale smoothies? Have you lost your MARBLES?!?!?! OF course, kale smoothies. I'll bring the generator and the Nutri-Bullet ;).

NOT.

I'm getting pretty excited, too. Might even bring my fishing rod and see if there's anything in that pond of yours besides aquatic plants.

So I'll bring a bunch of different bubba burgers. 2 regular, 2 onion, 2 jalapeño, 2 bacon cheeseburger . that's 48 burgers I can grab dogs too how many? Oh and I'll bring rolls too

This is only a few days after I get home - not sure if I'll be able to swing it. Holding out hope, though.

How cold should I expect it to be? I don't have underquilts for the kids hammocks or mine but my hennesy has that super shelter thing, I've got some ideas though for the kids so... I'm curious to temp

30's or so. Last year was pretty cold at night.

He's not kidding. Plan on bringing some extra warmth for yourself and the kids. I was woefully under-prepared for the first gathering I came to a couple years ago, and marginally better prepared last year....but it has gotten pretty cold at night, and my kids do not sleep outside more than this once a year.

Thanks trailbum and GSOM. I've been researching an idea, I found something so I'm going to take two approaches

My son has already been in his MMSS and his hammock with a utility tarp with the reflective underside down to 38 and been too hot so for him, he also has the reflective thermarest he puts in the hammock and based on this Tarp pitching options if I move in his tie outs in like the purple dot I can make him doors to control convection I'll do some test setups to make sure I can close the doors this weekend, I actually don't have anything scheduled for once :D

For my daughter I'm taking a different route and she's the one I'm most concerned about staying warm as she doesn't have an MMSS and she wants to be able to winter backpack in whatever setup we do so weight and space matters so my goal is 4 season with weight and space in mind

I came across this video

I'm going to make some adjustments to his design, one I'm going to use shock cord so it will give with weight and instead of doing just the head and foot ends I'll fold the sides and make that my suspension instead of the head and feet. This way I believe it will sit high and tight to the hammock and then I can use the head and feet shock cords to control air under the hammock to attempt to regulate temp by creating or removing the gap. Then I'll pick up some Reflectix and cut it into 4 6' sections and put one or two in between the hammock and "underquilt" for her, with her Teton +20 bag that should work. I'll pick up a utility 10x14 tarp & set it up the same way as my son's.

If it works out I'll get her a lighter weight tarp with doors like the Hennesy Monsoon or the Warbonnet Superfly. If any of us get cold I'll have an extra layer of insulation from the remaining 2 pieces of refectix we can use, I also have 2 spare 2 person SOL blankets I'll bring so I can always put them over their bug nets and it will reflect heat top and bottom, plus I always have hand and feet warmers with us. I'll let you know how it works out his weekend in my theoretical test setup as it will only be in the 40s here.

mid to high 40s in the souther tier of nh here...

i'd expect the mountain base to be CHILLY... hell, could snow.

no skinny dipping in that river ;)

fire up the wood stove!

Getting really excited as the time draws near! I've had a pretty crappy year and a half, and looking forward to hanging out a bit. Also, looks like the boss has relented and I'll be bringing my son with me this year :) You'll get to see hammock bunk beds, as my wife requires his to be set up as near to mine as possible.

That's awesome, JP! I slept outside in my hammock last night, temp dropped down in the low 40's (high 30's) and I bailed out about 5:45 am due to kinda being a little frozen. Gonna hafta find a better setup for cold weather, or I'll be tenting with my girls.

Also, re: food - trailbum, I was wondering if you want me to dig up some grubs for snacking?

Mike, I would be interested to learn what you come up with for cold weather hammocking. Thinking about doing some winter hangs this year.

what was your setup?
I made a pad out of 2 pieces of 16" wide reflectix joined lengthwise with a strip of tap repair tape (tyvek tape would work, too) this goes under the bag and allows me to lay diagonal without falling off the pad.
a buddy of mine used to fake an underquilt with a poncho liner and space blanket clipped under his hammock with binder clips. he would drape a second poncho liner over his ridgeline and let it hang over the sides of the hammock.

I've done -10F in my hammock before, and numerous 0-30F hangs. I won't lie and say I didn't wake up cold a few times at -10F, but I was mostly comfortable. Setup that night was Warbonnet Blackbird, Superfly tarp, USGI MSS, and goose down underquilt. My dog ate my underquilt (boy was THAT a mess) so now I'm stuck with a self-inflating pad, which does pretty well down to 20F or so.
