I'll be in for whatever, and thanks to those doing the legwork.

If Buck ends up making the knives, what do y'all think of trying to get them to make us a 310 Whittler. It's a less common configuration, which I believe is being discontinued this year. That might make the forum knife a bit more special.

I already asked! Was told it would not be possible due to being discontinued.

This does not look like a proper knife for a traditional knife forum.

I'm only familiar with their European site, it's quite different in terms of the knives they do, eg

I would prefer a slightly larger knife, hence my preference of the 301.

That being said, I do love a whittler, and I would love to have one in a larger frame.

I'm guessing that there was some period of time when Buck actually made their stockman knives themselves? I thought early on they were made by Camillus, then maybe Schrade, now they're made in China.

I bought a 2008 Forum Knife, the 2009 one I got left out of much to my annoyance, bought the 2010, 2011(first GEC knife and an entirely new pattern), didn't like the 2012 but that was also a new pattern from GEC, 2013 I bought again a new pattern from GEC, so too the 2014 GEC new pattern knife, got the Canal St 2015 pattern based on an existing model-the company went bust during production or soon after, our only stainless knife, I won a 2016 knife again GEC new pattern 35, I bought last year's knife a GEC 15. EACH of these was paid beforehand by Paypal before I received a knife and before any were made. So I think GEC got the money guaranteed as it were, no problem for me and none for them I assume. This sounds like prepayment to me..

I think we must ask ourselves a central question when it comes to the numbers game: Is it a Forum Knife or a Flipper's Knife?:D Last year's 500 order was huge, the biggest yet and loads got sold immediately afterward on the secondary mkt. That's all OK but it should not be a central concern, the sellability of a Forum or group knife:rolleyes:

If Buck are prepared to do the knife, one of their Stockman, then why not FOR A CHANGE? GEC has benefited from making very good Forum Knives, it's not some altruistic plan of theirs 'allowing' us to have a knife & we should be feeling grateful about it;) All the patterns they made as Forum Knives, the 85 (particularly) 78, 13, 35,15 have all been made with great success as variations so GEC has enjoyed a symbiotic benefit too and I'm all for that but being humble towards them is misplaced.

I like Buck knives, they're authentic, long established and a special version with bone or stag scales would be a hit with many. Do we actually have to have 500 minimum? that needs confirming. One point I like about their Stockmen is the ALL STAINLESS construction, so I'm dismayed by talk of brass! Brass stinks:D we don't need no stinkin' brass:poop: :poop:

But that point will have to be decided by poll:D I think Buck may let us decide that, GEC seems to decide now what we can have...;)

Great post Will:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I also feel that CPM154 would be a safer bet. Especially considering many folks sharpen with benchstones, be it water or oil. Many of those stones do not have the hard elements (SiC, or diamond) to cut the Vanadium carbides of S90V.

This may provide for a difficult time for many here to sharpen the knife, and may be a point of contention.

That's what I was thinking ;)

Some of them are made in China, with a different model number and a lower price. Buck made them after Camillus and maybe Schrade, and they still do.
Unless I'm mistaken, which could never happen.

Early on, the 300 series were made by Camillus. Some time after 1986, they were made in house by Buck.
The 370 series are made in China, but the 300s are still USA made.

CPM 154 is a good choice but even Bucks 420Hc the way they heat treat it would be nice.
Some of those premium steels are tough for even an experienced sharpener, as you said might not appeal to many members.
I understand that their 420hc is of quality, but for a limited run of this nature. I would like to see something a little less pedestrian.

Thanks. What's weird is when I go to the Buck site and look at "Everyday" knives all I see is the Chinese stuff. But when I search for "301" or "303", they pop up with a price and shopping cart button. I wonder why they're so hard to find.
