2018 BF Traditional Knife

At the risk of misinterpreting, I'll take a crack at it. I've followed the thread from the beginning. Here's how I see things at the moment:
  • skblades has offered to spearhead a Buck traditional, and has approached Spark about coming to an arrangement for using the BladeForums name (which would enable it to be the official Traditional subforum knife)
    • The 301 or 303 Stockman is the leading candidate, perhaps including a wooden box, and in premium stainless
    • If an arrangement around the name can't be reached, there may be a Buck SFO for a 301/303, but it would not bear the BF tang stamp
  • waynorth is likely not spearheading the forum knife this year, as he is feeling a bit burned out
  • GEC is amenable to producing this year's knife, but someone willing to shoulder the logistical burden and financial risk would need to step forward
  • A couple other manufacturers have been contacted, but there doesn't seem to be nearly as much traction around them as there is for a Buck or GEC offering
For a much more humorous and engaging summary, just search this thread for posts by meako. :D
Thank you for the summary as I really didn't want to read the chatter on 46 pages.

Lot going on in my absence, it's better than stagnation though-unless it's real Stag you're talking about:D

Some people have found the 303 Buck too small, I don't mind them at all in fact I find them very well made and practical BUT the Forum Knife has never had a Large Stockman and that's quite bizarre when you think of it.

Big Stockman with upgraded stainless, no shield, no engravings or suchlike, BF tang stamp, Elk, Burlap, Osage Orange scaled would be my real preference BUT it looks like we may get some choice if Buck can work out the details with The Great Spark, and that's very good. Don't think Buck do punches and they were already on a Forum Knife (which I'm glad to own) why not have a Penblade instead of Spey, that's a nice choice? Anyway, like I said, we may get some vote on it.

As for GEC, well why doesn't somebody from that hallowed company actually suggest something if they are in fact interested? If the proposal is interesting then perhaps some Big Gun dealer may then want to become go between? But if we don't hear about it then we must assume they are not interested this year.....

I think the proper procedure is for us to ask GEC. We are seeking their service, and they have always responded with good knives at minimal cost to us. They are under pressure to produce a lot of knives from a small company, but I know they would squeeze us in if asked.

However, reading it from the beginning is highly recommended because it will REALLY make you want to have this 2018 BF Traditional Forum knife. It's like being forced to watch "Dances With Wolves" for two weeks straight. Lots of highs / lows and at this point it's looking like you will get to ride off into the sunset with Stands With a Fist... and a new BF traditional knife :) Maybe o_O

And tears as the wolf doesn't survive. :(

You think you can just waltz in on page 48 and buy a knife? No, you've got to earn it! :p
Now, where did I put that pitchfork? o_O
:D

Like I've said other times, this thread goes too fast for me.

I bought a Buck 301 because I wanted to try one of their US made knives. Unfortunately, the spey blade tip seems to be designed to sit proud of the frame.

I am out on a Buck 301 forum knife.

Yeah, pretty much. ;) In years past I have commented on the "selection process" and folks didn't like it much. I am just going to ride with the flow. But I would prefer something made by GEC over Buck. If I had a vote.... I'd say, let's do a fancy peanut or perhaps something on the GEC #14 frame. No barlows.

I don't think that's how business works. It's certainly not how GEC works, from what I have observed over the past few years.

They sell pretty much every knife they make lately. I think a dealer posted earlier this year that GEC has said they are cutting back on the number of SFOs they are doing.
They have no official presence on these forums.
Though they have an online shop, they mostly don't do retail, relying on dealers to do that end of the business.

Yet here you are giving them flak for not reaching out to some online forum and deal with all these people that have these ideas for what kind of knife they want made and sift through all of it and produce several hundred knives to sell for us?

What upside is there for GEC to do that?

Quite simple really, they've made the vast majority of Forum Knives already, their main intermediary Charlie Campagna is understandably burned out with the process & would prefer to take a break, Buck and their intermediaries seem keen to consider it yet a lot of Forum members keep asking that we should wait for GEC to offer something. Fair enough, but how?

And how is that giving them flak exactly?? I'm not expecting them to poll us and ask each of us what we want, I'd simply like to know IF they are interested in offering an alternative and what? They're a business and one reason why most of their knives are sell outs might or may be because of the success of their Forum Knives which have attracted enthusiasts, fans and some flippers...attention and profile. The 11, 12, 14, 16, years all had runs and variants made from the Forum Knife, so too with the 13 (albeit later) and the 17 was the well established and widely liked pattern 15. So yes, I would say it's been a symbiotic relationship, they've done well out of it and it has boosted interest and SFO's so would they like to continue this year??

I would love to see a GEC 44 Gunstock in ironwood and a federal shield for the forums knife. The 44s will be in production soon anyways.

I'd go for a 44 Gunstock. In general, I would ask GEC what frames are in their production schedule come August-September-October time frames and make a decision based on what they plan on doing already.

I'm confused, Did Charlie and Barry actually say they didn't want to participate in a gec made forum knife? I've been burned out for 10years , yet I still show up to work .
Edit- ok bad analogy- just wanted to be clear they're out

Well I hope you're getting paid. They put in many hours, shouldered a substantial financial risk and sold the knives at cost (which would have included shipping costs and incidentals). God bless them.

We had that scenario last year, a knife they were already making just different covers which was pretty bland looking for a Forum knife IMHO.
I thought the whole idea of a Forum knife was to have something unique ?
