For the most part, I will continue to keep my head down and my mouth shut until we have some firm choices. However, I will say that any form of Buck trailing point will be a no sale for me. I have a 110 and like it fine, but I do not need another.

It's from the secondary market and there's glue all over the front but I take it that you don't like the Buck 301 in general. I think the last 301 that I bought new was $30-35 shipped so it is an inexpensive knife. With a steel upgrade, full flat grind, custom cover materials, custom tang stamp, etc I suspect a SFO will cost a lot more. If I recall correctly, the BCCI limited edition 301 was originally around the cost of a GEC.

Yes. I have a BCCI 301. It was roughly $110 with Micarta covers and BG42 blades.
I also have a Buck 501 in S30V with stabilized cherry handles. It was about $85.

Both were made by the Buck Custom Shop. The fit and finish are miles beyond the fit and finish of a standard Buck and are definitely in the GEC realm. If all you have ever seen is a standard production Buck knife, there is no comparison to what you get from the custom shop.

Buck does a superlative heat treat on S30V.

My suggestion would be to order a steel that Buck already uses. That will lower the costs.
Also, ordering a pattern that they already make will also keep the costs reasonable.

Personally, I hope SK can work something out with Spark. I think it is the option most likely to result in a 2018 Traditional Forum Knife.

Good information, knarfeng knarfeng

The photo of the 2-blade that I posted was intended only to show how everything fits with 2 blades since the knife normally has 3 blades. I think Frank and most of the other traditional knife veterans understand that this was my intention.

I definitely wasn't showing it as an example of Bucks craftsman ship. The photos are from an auction and the someone got glue all over it. The prototypes that skblades posted are going to be much more representative of what to expect.

Many of you know that I'm a fan of the 301. And it would be nice add another USA manufacturer to the list of forum knife makers. But I do have concerns about possible confusion over the price, especially since there were a few posts about Buck being more affordable. It would be unfortunate if people drop out over price AFTER voting for a Buck with the assumption that it would be inexpensive.

I'm also a GEC fan but a plain #14 is not particularly interesting to me. It sounds like GEC wouldn't have time to make new dies but if they could make a cap lifter for the #14, I think it would be extremely popular. A "micro brew scout" that fits in a watch pocket. Doesn't necessarily have to have a sheepfoot or easy open notch. It could be done with whatever main blade they are using for this run. Just an idea but I think we are too late for it.

I very much agree on Bucks s30v and the Buck custom shop have a 110 dlt ultimate hunter which I guess is put together in the custom shop? Anyways it's excellent

Lets bring those prototypes back up from page 24...

Post from skblades:

"Had Buck actually make up some samples of the 301. Like I said, access isn't a problem! ;)

Top is Stag.
Middle is Burlap Micarta.
Bottom is Poplar Burl

Good points, I don't get the feeling that folks realize how fast the price can jump when you start adding extra special stuff to a custom Buck. Things can escalate really fast with added features and special materials...

Man those do look good! But isn't that very similar design to the serpentine 2-blade forum knife from 2015 or 2016? These are nicer though, especially that stag!

You know what would probably look killer though, although not strictly traditional, would be carbon fiber scales. Whoa. More traditional would be a really black ebony. Or ancient bog oak! The poplar is nice but then due to the variations in the material it's a crapshoot whether you like the knife you actually receive.

What about something like amboyna burl? I'm yet to see a bad piece of that.

My choice right now would be a 20CV (or Toolsteel) 301 with bottle-opener instead of the spey. Scales: some nice wood or micarta, but Jigged bone etc would also be nice :D

We did a 2 blade (CSC). But we've already done a 3-blade stockman as well (Northwoods). And we did 2 barlows (GEC and Queen). So nice we did them twice. ;)

The 2 blade is an idea that I suggested. Some folks showed interest but it's not anything more than talk at this point. I would find it much more interesting. Also, 300Bucks had been wanting them to do a 2 blade for many years.

@skblades, since we are having some wish list requests here, I prefer my 112's a little slimmer than when they leave the factory.

Any chance Buck would be willing to make a pocket slim 112?

NICE! :)

Good info and sensible advice Frank

Big time Fishface.
Recent experience with burl suggests
Variations in appearance and quality.
I wont vote for burl in the unlikely event it makes the poll. Can anyone address that concern? Uniformity whilst often perceived as boring is the best way to avoid disappointment.
Carbon fibre is as likely as Satan skiing to work.
Ebony would be good.
In for one in any case:):).

In terms of polls, perhaps the mods ought to post those, after Spark has given consent (or not)

I think this is a solid point that I wanted to echo. As much as I can't wait to participate in and gripe, I mean debate, about options, I think it is best to chill and wait for a more official step forward before we talk too much about hypothetical polls. I think it is best to leave the polls up to the mods.

A 301 is a Large Stockman, the 08 Forum Knife was a Small Stockman. CS's knife was Shadow which was a first and round ended, the 301 would be different as it's Slant bolster and no shield- another first for Forum Knives.

The two bade option could be interesting but a Pen could substitute the Spey if wanted. Bottle Openers and Punches I've enough of personally and they abound on SAKs and work very well on them too. Let's have a Small Pruner:D that'll skyrocket the costs but think exclusive:eek::D;)
