2018 BF Traditional Knife

I don't think dealer profit is the key. I think the dealers that really frequent here are smaller dealers, generally doing all the work themselves. And finding a full week to set aside and do this while letting everything else get behind is not an option. There are dealers that have a good sized staff that could handle it better, but I am not going to try and put words in anyone's mouth. Because there are other circumstances that would make it complicated as I have pointed out.

But, if we do get a couple of volunteers, I think we can knock this out without a problem - this year or in the future. I will even cover the purchase price for the volunteers.

If GEC do a 14 this year, is there any chance they could do it as a Sleeveboard single-spring? That would a) Be a new rendering of the pattern b) Certain exclusive aura too

For a Forum Knife 19 I'd like to see a Talon/Eureka Smooth Bone Barehead, all steel (even stainless yes!) gimp or Propeller shield:cool: Just speculating.....:)

To provide a brief update, here's what I've found so far:
  • I think it's possible to accept payments for the forum knife without any tax liability, as 100% of the money flows right back out. It's technically income, because it comes in as Goods and Services, but it's offset by expenses that match that income; it produces zero profit. But I'm not an accountant and I don't have an accountant, so I'm not sure how to come to a more definitive conclusion.
  • PayPal's terms only permit pre-sales if the item(s) are shipped within 20 days of the order, which sounds like it would be a stumbling block here. Wouldn't the fulfillment person (who accepts payment, receives knives from GEC, and ships knives to members), or people, need to take orders well in advance of production?
  • When I ship internationally based on an order that's been paid for with PayPal, I can't generate a shipping label from within PayPal (like I can domestically). I have to print a separate label in LibreOffice, fill out the customs form by hand, take it to the post office counter for mailing, and then mark it shipped in PayPal. Tracking isn't always an option, so that part of the loop doesn't close as neatly as it does for domestic orders. If there are ways to streamline this, they're outside my modest ecommerce capabilities.
I've reached out to Barry (gunstockjack) with a couple of questions around the whole process.

I wouldn't use paypal's pre-sales mechanism. You could probably grab a stamps.com account to solve the international issues as it would print the customs as part of the label itself. Worst case is you would need to copy/paste the address.

By taking PayPal payments, aren't you (the general "you," not you specifically) by default accepting their terms regarding pre-sales? I don't follow.

Stamps.com is an interesting idea. I've never used it, but I will check it out and see how it works. Off the cuff, it does look like it supports international shipping labels. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am really interested to see what sk and the forum come up with for a buck knife. Personally I think the clip/ sheepsfoot Texas jack on the 301 frame that Charlie suggested would be simply amazing, and I would be more than happy with that. I am hesitant to believe that buck would be willing to modify a pattern that much for us.
Having said that if gec were to agree to produce a sleeveboard on the 14 frame I would loose my mind! It’s probably wishful thinking, but we would be absolutely insane not to inquire about that.
I know people have been asking for another pen knife for some time and this would be a great medium/ small platform for it. Some dark red jigged bone similar to that on the 38 farmers jack would be killer.

I don't guess I have ever pre-sold anything via paypal. And my web store does not use them for shipping. But, I can go back to payments made in January and still see a "Print Shipping Label" button. Which means that if you just accept payments using the pay.me button, you can print the label any time you want in the future. I see no need to consider it a pre-sale as far as paypal is considered - consider it a membership with future privileges. Someone that does sell using paypal for sales / shipping would need to verify.

Interesting. That does sound like a viable workaround. Thanks!

I'm curious, should I include the Buck forum in these proceedings? Or should I keep it to traditional. I've gone back and forth on this.

I believe the voting should be ours alone, but if/when a Buck is chosen, open it up for sale to the Buck forum as well. It may be needed to reach the 250 mark.
I'm with black mamba black mamba on this. I mean, there is no way to stop Buck Forum folks from voting if they want, and I wouldn't want to exclude anyone, but at the same time, folks from the Buck Forum wouldn't necessarily have the same expectations/needs from the knife. But I would also like the idea of as many people being a part of it as possible.

Oh I don't know... Though this process has gotten me to subscribe to the Buck Forum now.

Gang....

The same folks that purchase Buck slipjoints (300 series) also purchase other slipjoints and happen to be on this forum too...so stop the ridiculousness ......
And as far as that goes everyone that frequents BF has an interest in a forum knife so let’s not forget ourselves and begin excluding members.

Seems like a win win to inform folks in the Buck forum!
They would appreciate it and the 2018 forum knife would have more buyers, win, win.

Certainly anyone who finds their way here can vote. Anyone who finds their way here would then be a frequenter of the Traditional subforum. I simply would not advertise this on the Buck forum. Members of the Buck forum who do not come to Traditionals on their own would likely have a purely Buck frame of interest, and might skew the voting results. I did not mean to be exclusive, but protective of the process.

It would likely affect any voting for GEC vs. Buck.
