2018 GEC Rendezvous and Picnic!

I just got caught up on this thread. Thanks to everyone who shared photos of the experience (and the knives!). I'm hoping to make it over there one year. I'm a lot closer now than I was back in AZ, but it'd still be quite a drive.

Someone ( B B.F.U maybe?) mentioned and posted an "in use" photo of a #78 in glitter gold acrylic. I'd be curious to see more of those if anyone has photos; it has my interest piqued a bit (though I'm sure as a Rendesvous parts knife it's basically unobtanium :D).

There were 8 of the single blades and 12 double blades made.

its funny you say that, this was a huge joke in the shop because I was discussing with Christine Tucker the hideousness of the glitter gold. That will be the only parts knife I 'd bet money is still there actually. There were two blade 78s and 1 blade 78s made and quite a few left when I was last in the shop last saturday. The only other parts knife besides that was the micarta clip with bail and chain and thats probably gone.

Yeah, seems like everyone at the shop dislikes the glitter gold along with most collectors. Interesting, being that they made several patterns in it in the past.

On the other hand, everyone who is not a collector who I've shown the glitter gold loves it.

William seemed to say that once the current supply is gone they won't make/use more glitter gold.

The Rendezvous Specials (Parts knives) were truly special this year.

There were 4 Smooth Orange Bone 56’s. These had a spear blade and a houndstooth shield.

There were 12 Smooth Emerald bone 35’s. These were configured like the Churchill with the Orleans shield .

There were 9 Smooth Emerald bone 81’s. These were configured like the recent run of Bull Moose’s, but with the Orleans shield .

Not sure how many double and single bladed Glitter Gold 78’s knives there were. These did not have a shield.

Did I leave any out?

There were also some 15s

I was hoping someone could summarize the typicaly day at the Rendezvous maybe using 2018 as reference?
I guess what I am interested in is what happens in-between the scheduled events. For example, at what point do folks start lining up to wait for the doors to open on Thursday morning? Are there people there Wednesday night camping out? What happens the rest of Thursday or Friday after the store opens? Does the gathering in front of GEC last all day? Is everyone off on their own in the evenings or do you all coordinate places to meet and have a few libations? I know it is a little early but if I plan to attend in 2019 I need to start making arrangements pretty soon...just trying to get a feel for what I should plan for. If I am making the trip I definitely don't want to miss out on anything.
Thank you for the insight :thumbsup::thumbsup:

some as early as 3 am on Thursday morning.

Some one does, he has a camper and parks it in the lot. Usually one of the first ones on the line.

People come and go, but there is a large group of us that tends to stay chatting and looking at each others' knives.

Evenings, depending on which groups you hang out with or how far you are willing to go are either spent at the cross creek resort. the bunch from the fb group stays in Franklin.

Each day varies a bit too be honest. some folks mainly show up for the first day since the rendezvous knives are best available first come first served. For me, I usually treat this as a vacation and depending on how I sleep either make or dont make it to the release. This year for example, I did since I slept awful and was up at 5ish and made the lines. Day two and the picnic day are slightly more relaxed since the frenzy for the knives mostly goes as the pickings dwindle in the shop. But still a lot of chatting and discussions, sharing what not. With the queen show gone, really just left to the oil festival and the small attractions in town, they do have a brewery, some diners stuff like that. Titusville itself is not huge and one can walk across it for the most part in maybe 30 minutes. Dinner with the folks here is mostly at the Cross Creek's Resort's dining area/bar. And on Fridays usually, Bill, Randy, or both, maybe William will join us for beverages at the resort. This year was William, and I believe someone has me doing "Country Roads" for Karoke.

Thank you sir that is exactly what I was looking for. I'd really like to make it next year and will be coming out from the west coast. A traditional knife vacation sounds great I am really looking forward to it :)

yea, its the people really. For us, we usually take a large table or two but the staff lets us put a bunch together, and we talk knives for hours and hours. also some folks bring out knives to coonfinger and chicken eye in the dining room. Charlie, Lyle, John, Ron, Harry, Russell, usually have a bunch. We also share our most recent purchases. For example, the other year, since Duncan, Paul and Dave were there, all of which had many pickings from the shows took em out to share. Each day of the shows, meant new show and tell at dinner. Also weather plays a part. Everything culminates at the picnic, which is usually the end of the rendezvous but some folks stay to the very end. We all sit, have a few beers or something stronger. Its a great time! A gathering of some of the largest collectors with a wealth of knowledge and knives. Deals even go on at dinner if Charlie brings out a roll of knives, or Harry for trading, and some of the regulars from the rendezvous joins us at dinner.

I heard a rumor that one of the larger dealers from the old Queen show is in the works trying to get things organized to start up the show again that same weekend, just as a general Titusville Knife Show. Hopefully that is true and actually happens.

It sounds great. I was a little too late to the party this year and didn't know a lot of folks on The Porch or otherwise in the knife community at that time. But I followed along and enjoyed seeing all the photos and reading the stories in this thread and elsewhere. Now I am really motivated to make it out there so I can meet a lot of the great folks I've had the pleasure of getting to know a little here. If I can pick up some cool knives while I'm at it that would be definitely be a bonus too :) I have a feeling everyone pays close attention when Charlie brings out a roll of knives! :)
