I'm terribly traditionalist, so I voted for Sheffield. I believe they can produce us something really traditional and will be willing to do the most to please us. We all know we're an awfully demanding lot. Also, Sheffield is something different. Gec is my second choice because I know they'll do a fine knife. We had Buck last year and Lionsteel is too modern looking for my taste. I like the look of Hess knives, but have no use for a fixed blade ...

Dont we need to contact all said manufacture's first and see if they are willing or able to make a knife for us? We could then maybe get some options or limitations by each manufacturer and then vote based on this info?

I like all the options, I just want to know what is actually on the table from each first.

GEC has done it before, and all indications are they would do it again, provided it can be suited to their existing schedule. Lionsteel has been very amenable to Mike's orders, so I would think they wouldn't have a problem dealing with him again for our order. Jack has done much work with Sheffield before, and seems confident we could work with them on a forum knife. We just had Buck do one for us and that went very well. I don't see what would prevent them from doing it again, provided we had someone like SKBlades helping us out. Hess is really the only questionable choice in this poll.

Mike has stated that he thought it would be tough to get a Lionsteel offering done in one year.

I may have missed that. I did recall seeing that any new pattern from Lionsteel would be unlikely. For some reason I got the impression that an existing pattern (but perhaps with two blades, or some other, easier unique features) would be possible.

I think it would be asking a lot to request one of CK's knives for our forum knife.
Looks like the race is between only two entrants anyway.:)
GEC or Sheffield. Other votes just take away from one of those two. Imo

Well people are free to change their vote as things progress, so if those who vote for Lionsteel, Buck, or Hess want to change to GEC or Sheffield, they can.

Cool. Good option.
FYI- I would love a Lionsteel. I just don't think it's in the cards this time around.

Here's what Jack said in the other thread about getting knives from the UK to the USA (or elsewhere):

"It'd be a lot of work, but it's certainly feasible, and knives could probably be had nearer $50 than $100, particularly with the poor state of Sterling at the moment. If they were to be manufactured in Sheffield, the bulk of them could be shipped to the US in one parcel, directly from the cutler, and distributed within the US and Canada by an agent there. Or the cutler could send them out individually (though that would cost more in terms of postage)."

Seems like Sheffield would be the way to go if we want quality knives on the lower end.

Tough choice, as they all have appeal. I voted for Sheffield, as I feel like the GEC option would give us a pattern that they are already planning on making. If our 400 BF knives are virtually the same as 3000 other knives GEC is already producing in 2019, except for the tang stamp, I don't feel like it is unique enough. I think the Sheffield option gives us the freedom to come up with something from their past that is really unique and appealing.

The last sentence is where the meat is. That could add a lot of postage/cost to each knife. Someone still needs to handle orders/ money stateside, correct?
Edit: @Jack Black?

I voted for Sheffield, because I am loaded with GEC knives and very happy with the three A.W Wright knives I have acquired through @jackblack. But, I will save my money and purchase whatever comes, unless I don't like it. ;);););)

I to went with Sheffield, the history and tradition sway me. Not knocking any other companies, looks to me GEC has done an admirable job in the past. But as a traditional knife fan even though I don't have anything from any company past or present in Sheffield, I think it be neat to have a forum knife that comes from a tradition that predates any American companies. Same could be said of the Solingen region. Most if not all American cutlery firms can trace their roots to those epicenters of the knife world.

To keep costs down, yes. But the cutler would be Sheffield, if I read it correctly, and Jack mentions that they could send it out to addresses, but at extra postage costs.
