My only concern with using a manufacturer outside the USA (where most of the knives will be sold) is due to the (inevitable) warranty issue. Reading the post arrival threads there seems to be a 1-2% return rate for some issue. Those types of issues will be much more difficult to resolve if the knife in question must travel internationally.

On the other hand, I quite like the idea of this being an international forum and effort. The "flattening" of the world does have some benefits.

A simple solution would be to ask the cutler to make a percentage of extra knives to be held back in case there are any issues. I've not had a problem in the past though, and one of the nice things about Sheffield is that I can go into a factory, ask for a particular knife, and generally get it made in a few days

I voted for GEC because I would love to have a jumbo jack based on the upcoming 86 pattern. I would like to get the PPP stamp on our 2019 knife. I’m also hoping for some killer jigging to make this one for the ages. Basically a jumbo jack version of this...

That IS some killer jigging, nice pattern too

Another note, people should vote for what they want here and not be put off by how the vote is going. I never understand this hive mind that want's to be on the winning side at all costs;):D:D
Excepting if you know your first choice doesn't have a kerosene cat's chances in hell of being selected, it's good to consider changing your vote to better assure the selection of your second choice.

Sounds like we just need to wait for the owner and mods to tell us what our options are.
I'm a little new to this Forum Knife start up process and I guess we've been going about it poorly.
I am willing to wait for the Owner and Mods to give us direction and tell us what our options are before I get excited.

Voted Sheffield as a nod to history and possibly a larger range of choices.

Another thought. Jack mentioned that a Sheffield could be had at a lower price point. This gives us an opportunity to upgrade features or materials and still stay within price limits used in the past.

Who will handle procuring, purchasing, and distribution?

That right there is the big question Barry that I've been asking throughout the other thread. If we don't have that locked in, I don't see how we can approach a manufacture.

Everyone is acting like every aspect of this process has to be solved at one time. And this thought process seems to be the largest roadblock. Narrowing the choices to 2-3 makers has a large impact on who will handle the rest of the process. Unless, of course, there is one dealer that has a close relationship with EVERY maker on the list. Vote the poll and then we can have volunteers for the top choices; but I don't know of any one person that is the RIGHT choice, regardless of the maker.

Agreed.

Please, guys, listen to Mike. He knows what he's doing here. Yall vote and the rest will start to fall into place depending on the outcome.

I dont want to vote for a manufacturer without knowing what we can get from them. I like the Sheffield idea and I enjoy GEC knives tremendously.

My vote would be different based on pattern. From Sheffield a lambsfoot gets a nod over a curved pruner style. Likewise I wouldnt want another barlow from gec but a whittler or 35 frame scout would get my vote over Sheffield.

Hard to vote with little information as I see it. I enjoy reading the discussions and everyone's ideas though. Always smile when I read through these threads :)

We do a knife every year and I think the earlier we get it organized and complete the better. I have a production background and it's hard for me to grasp some of the hesitation by some manufacturers to do a one off knife for their target demographic. Size of run or wanting an older pattern you have the tooling for should not be an issue in my mind. If you are confident in your company to produce a quality product and can even make a little money on said knife, why pass up an opportunity to show your clients you are willing and able to give them a stellar collectable that will bring you future business, new clients and add to your reputation?

Maybe we should find an ambassador for all the current manufacturers and open up a dialogue to get timeframes, costs and options to simplify this moving forward? I think companies would be more willing to give us options if they new what they were getting from us. Say if we get them the knife we want by march first then using any previous tooling wouldnt be a problem? I may be way off base but I know my big clients that think ahead and give me more time to order material and produce the work get a more finely tuned product and make me want to work with them again vs the last minute people who are shooting for the moon and then want it as cheap as possible.

All just my personal opinion and I am a user, not a collector so my wants vary from others for my own reasoning. What makes it so great here, we all have a different opinion ;)
