Is random jigging simply too difficult to do consistently? Seems like it's much preferred to the symmetrical patterns, yet GEC doesn't offer it very often. The jigging on many old knives is stunning.

Looks like jigged bone pulled ahead of smooth wood. I hope we don't end up with sawcut. IMO it's not aesthetically pleasing.
All we have to do is request it. “Any bone on a GEC knife over the last 10 years or so”

If we want the random jigged bone found on the GEC #15 Rope Knife for example, then that is what we ask for. I don’t think Mike can be much clearer than that. See post #178.

I am likely to be happy with any bone or wood option. However, I will be maintaining my smooth wood vote and the only case where I might be inclined to not want a shield is if Sawcut Bone is chosen. Though I certainly have my preferences when it comes to jigged bone, I am not nearly as picky about the pattern of jigging as I am the color of the bone. I really do not want washed out dye... Seems to be a problem as of late.

Looks like "tractor tread" is taking the lead... :D

Traction for Tractor? ;):D

It's early days yet, O ye of little faith....Two scenarios could emerge: a whole load of malcontent Buck supporters could 'invade';) this patch and block vote for Ebony:D Buck makes Ebony handles but not jigged bone (at least not much for decades):D or more likely cells of Acrylic fanatics will awaken boosted by 'foreign' money...and steal the poll:cool: i'm all for it!

I’m holding out hope for this too, Travis. The Lick Creek Orchard Gem would be another great jigging style on this pattern. Picture stolen from a member here... and it’s not loading... I tried!
Another great choice. All we have to do is ask for it.

Remember back to the Heartland Clip SFO a few years back. I remember the person who ordered the SFO was upset because he ordered the random jigging like the Navy knife and ended up with something very different. There was another SFO that requested the same Navy knife jig that didn't get it either, can't remember what it was though... I don't think it's a guarantee just to request it.

If GEC had juniper wood, and I could be sure it would win, I'd be in the smooth wood camp. Juniper smells awesome and has great character.

I'd think Juniper would be awfully soft for knife scales.

I think you might have misunderstood what Mike said. He was responding to someone who said they didn't know where GEC got their bone, and said that GEC had been doing their own bone for the last 10 years or so, not that we had free choice of any bone GEC has made in the last decade. From post #36:

I would not expect primitive bone, soup bone, any culpepper bone, or any bone they haven't made in a couple years (because they usually stop making it for a reason).

Agreed.

I've been conducting an experiment, switching my vote periodically to 2nd in the horse race, assuming people will support the laggard. Thus far, my theory has proven right. Definitely no internal validity concerns in this study design. I'll be presenting this to my research class as a perfect example of causality in social science. Thank you all for your participation in this study, the consent is in the BF ToS, I assure you.
How does it factor into your "experiment" if other people are doing the same thing, hmm?;)

I could be mistaken, but I think I’m reading this clearly.

Post 36 from Mike Latham.
“Sorry, that's the next poll. I have not been told of any prohibited jigging patterns; although many of the standard rules will apply. I would not expect primitive bone, soup bone, any culpepper bone, or any bone they haven't made in a couple years (because they usually stop making it for a reason).”

The key sentence in the paragraph states that there are no prohibited jigging patterns. Conversersly, all of the jigging patterns are available.

The second part of the paragraph states which bone types will not be available. The options that won’t be available are the ones that GEC doesn’t have currently in their stock. Primitive bone was a one time thing. They found an old cattle graveyard and used the bone. Culpeper bone was an outside source that dried up.

All the good examples we have seen in this thread have been done in the past few years. All we have to do is ask.

According to this source, it is.

It is softer, but not too soft. No softer than old barn chestnut, which GEC has used before.

It may grow there, but it's been growing and been used for all manner of stuff in Europe far longer;) Good link as it points out Juniper is robust material, just never seen in on an American knife myself. Another reason for change:cool:
