2019 GEC 86 Oil Field Jack and Forum Knife Picture Thread

Sorry if this was already discussed...Is the Forum knife getting an etch?
I don't think so. I don't remember a poll, and there certainly would have been a poll.

In the interest of hedging my bets tho, I could be wrong or misremembering.

This 1st batch didn't turn out nearly as handsome as I had envisioned them being when I reserved mine.
IT IS OIL SUCKER ROD WOOD. IT HAS TO BE DRY WOOD TO SUCK. WHEN THIS WOOD STARTS SUCKING SOME GUN OIL , IT WILL POP ! OIL IT , STICK IT IN YOUR POCKET AND USE IT DAILY. YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THAT KNIFE. TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH.

I haven’t read all the shield comments, but you obviously can’t make everyone happy. Ever. :)

BUT, had I know about the wrench I wouldn’t have reserved this one personally. Maybe that’s a lesson for me. There is an assumption you make on past tends that sets up expectations. When there’s such a departure from the norm, it can be disappointing.

That’s not to discourage creativity either. But it would be nice to know the entire configuration up front so we could make more informed choices.

Which did you reserve?

I am annoyed with all the brushed finishes. Bolsters and shields should be polished. They already don’t polish all the micarta and the desert ironwood knives. Do they really need to add Sucker Rod wood to that list? It seems lazy.

If the buffing compound gets embedded in the material (canvas micarta, porous woods, etc.) they do brushed so that the handle material looks more natural and not filled with black flecks. You can't buff the bolsters and shield and not buff the handle. Talk to your dealer, maybe they will take it out back and buff if full of black mess for you :D

Well how did they do it before? The previous Oil Sucker Rod knives all had polished bolsters & shields and looked great.

I think that is the difference between what they made work when they had to and lessons learned for going forward. The did canvas micarta with polished prior to proclaiming "no more" as well.

Now that the buzz from the 92s is gone, I am getting super pumped for the forum knife!

Looking forward to hearing some feedback on the 86s as they start showing up for folks.

I have a micarta reserved.... while I'm not terribly enamored with the wrench, at least it will be different. It's certainly not a deal breaker for me. Although, I would be open to trades....:D

I’m in this camp on this particular knife I think. I am grateful, however, that GEC continues to do some unique/quirky/different things (banana, beaver, guitar shields for example) as it certainly keeps things interesting
