2019 GEC 86 Oil Field Jack and Forum Knife Picture Thread

Anyone have experience with the sucker rod wood, how does it hold up? Sounds like the type of wood used can vary.

Yes, it holds up fine. I believe these oil sucker rods are pretty old, and were left out in the weather around Titusville for more than a century (since they changed from wood to metal rods). GEC acquired some of this wood. BTW, if you try, you can still smell the oil in them. Yes, they are pretty tough.

Crazy that the 2 blade 86, with the special shield, is listed at $94...
I kinda expected it to be more.

The vendor that I found mine at, was his last one. I paid a little more but still under 3 digits. Northfields will be more. I hope I don’t like the goldenrod so much I have to buy a second one.

I never noticed that...

Does look like a recurve in the pics, I wonder if that's just an optical illusion as it is just about the most subtle recurve I've ever seen.

I primarily sharpen/maintain with a Sharpmaker anyway so it's not really an issue for me.
Sharpmakers work great for touch ups.
Not so much for reprofiling. At least for me anyway. For that I like my edge pro.

I bought my first GEC in 2007. The most recent one in 2012, other than one on the exchange a few months back. An even dozen and all but 3 are users. I decided I'd like an 86 but I'd gotten out of touch with the market and didn't realize how much it had changed. How, let's say, competitive it's gotten. I almost lost patience and gave up trying to get one--if I didn't exactly figure the whole thing out, at least I got lucky, or else in the right place at the right time, and there's one on the way!

Very excited to get it and put it into the rotation!

Did anyone else notice that the wrench on the oily creek bone has the Tidioute logo?

I like it , buy I would of loved a Burnt Chocolate wavy jigged bone knife much better. MY SFO Charlie #93 peach seed and my #48s have that wavy peach seed jigging. I love that feel in my hand. I really like this knife, but I went with the oil creek bone , bloodwood , a the Charley black jack #86s. I am counting on more #86s to buy in December. Plus the December GEC Schedule has not been released yet. I am a single blade guy. But these GEC Jack #44s , #92s , and #86s are making my collection more awesome.

Charlie's 93 is more of a Rogers jigging than a peach seed. IMO.

This PAL knife is Rodgers bone. The master blade is marked with the early Remington mark. In around 1940 DuPont sold all the patterns and leftover blades and handles from the Remington period to PAL. Remington allowed them to use up the Remington marked blades, something they wouldn't allow DuPont to do during their period of manufacturing knives under the Remington/DuPont period.

So Rogers jigging is that wavy style ? I did not know what to call it. Nice to know , I am always learning knew things on Blade Forum. I love that feel of wavy Rogers jigging in my hand.

So...this is African Blackwood?

From what I have read Blackwood darkens when it is finished, really won't know what it will look like until finished. The 92 golden Camel bone was the same way, the production pics looked nothing like the finished knife.

It is not unusual to see African Blackwood like that. Depending on how it is finished, it might be darker on the knives. And, like cocobolo, African Blackwood darkens with time. Carry it for a couple years and it will definitely be darker.

Even if the blackwood turns out similar to my blackwood 77 from the recent run, this will be a sweet knife ... IMHO.

That's a big WOW from me. I would absolutely love it if my Forum Blackwood had a little color contrast just like that Barlow. Beautiful !!!!

just remember that even if it does, it’s likely to darken over time to near all black.
