2019 GEC 86 Oil Field Jack and Forum Knife Picture Thread

Its such a nice knife I expected it to go almost as popular as the 93. I realize that was pretty unique. I also admit this didn't appeal to me nearly as much until I saw a finished one, and moreso when I got my hands on one. I can't believe they arent sold out everywhere.
I agree it is a wonderful knife. I really like the walk and talk on these 86's! I think the main issue for most is likely the size/weight factor. I'm pretty sure they made a bunch of them too (will find out soon when production totals are released).

I'm getting concerned that the stag won't be done in time for my wife to get me one for Christmas. ;)

Christmas time is always a toss-up for the productions. Unless it's a super popular pattern, I think people are less willing to be adventurous when they have to budget for presents. They'll be sold out soon enough, though.

I don't believe I have ever seen production totals with most GEC knives. Where do you find this information?

With regard to the forum knife, it's amazing what a few days make in terms of the perception of completion.

The GEC website lists production totals by year. Click on the Information tab then scroll down to the Production Totals button.

How do the acrylics hold up if they get carried frequently?
Do they stay nice and shiny or do they get scratched up and dulled?

That's why I won't buy an acrylic handled knife. Too many other choices available that are more durable from an esthetics point of view. I'm not worried about breaking them. I did buy a #48 Improved Trapper but that is likely one of the last acrylic handled knives I get.

If your knife use is mostly: in the pocket, out of the pocket to cut/fondle, back in the pocket, they're fine. Because of the high luster, if you regularly drag the knife handle through abrasive material like sand, or throw it on concrete, it will mark. But the acrylic is just about as tough as micarta, and it buffs pretty easily back to smooth and shiny.

Expect similar "regular dulling/wear" to wood.

Not really it lowered it like half a hair. Just a enough to be able to feel the edges of the liners a bit. Nothing a few day in the pocket with a few coins wouldn’t get rid of. If it came this way I don’t think I would of even noticed.

Yeah, the spring lowering isn't a very big deal. I've seen worse from the factory on SFOs, and part of the reason you can feel it is that everything is still so crisp, not hyper buffed prior to assembly. So you're right, a little carry will calm'er down.

I've been reading posts here about how big this knife is...and why some won't like it because of its size....
In reality, its not all that big. It has pretty much the same clip blade as the GEC 54 pattern, but the 54 has a longer frame. Its only slightly larger than a TL-29, and is about the same size as a GEC 73 Scout or a F&F Bullnose.
