2019 GEC Pemberton Thread

Am I the only one that actually likes the Tidioute and UN-X-LD shields?

Well, this'll knock your socks off but I like them too. Although the Tidioute shield is a bit plain/simple, I think the UN-X-LD shield makes any knife rock.

I don't have a Pemberton but this #53 Stockman illustrates my point about the UN-X-LD shield.

Honestly, Ed, you don't have to prove anything to anyone and I mean that with utmost sincerity. Like what you like, prefer what you prefer, folks shouldn't judge. I just appreciate it when folks explain their distaste in something, I find it to be productive and it contributes constructively to the discussion overall, particularly on the forums here.

I also am fond of the Tidioute and UN-X-LD shields. I felt that the hotdog shield was the default for a good long while so the Tidioute is a nice change even if it is viewed as somewhat of a default. That said, I am very fond of the Federal and Bomb shields (likely my favorites) and was holding out hope that that the 2-blade versions might incorporate one or both. The small badge on the white bone looks very sharp though and the Tidioute looks excellent against that blue jigged. I can't find anything to hate here.

My wife just had to pick me up off the floor... :D
Kidding, I know you like GECs, and i'm all good with you picking on them too  :D

Was going to pass on the Dark Blue Jigged Bone Pemberton but after polishing they look to be the perfect shade of blue so I broke down and ordered one. Still have a Muslin on order so hopefully those will turn out just as nice.

I really like them, too. I've always liked how GEC does them on jigged bone. I don't usually like "branded" sheilds, but I think the reason I like GEC's is because they've not simply stamped their name in an existing classic sheild. Rather, they've made one uniquely their own. Well...pretty much at least. I've heard the Un-x-lD shield is supposed to be a cloud. But, cone on, it's not really. Based off it? Okay, probably. But it's its own thing. And the Tidioute shield, I've heard, is supposed to be a variant of the hotdog. This, to me, is a stretch. And we may be able to find a historical example of the Tidioute shield's shape with no lettering inside...but still, it's not exactly "common." So, I think GEC has come up with their own proprietary shields that aren't simply their name stamped into one of the classics. AND I LIKE THAT.

I have a knife with wood covers and a Tidioute sheild. I feel like that's pretty rare. One of my favorites in my collection.

That’s always the first place they land, and they always ship from a nearby town in PA. Must just be a local guy that buys directly from GEC?
Shew, IF that price is indicative of the MSRP, that mean dealer prices in the upper 80s-low 90s?? I sure hope not. I've got 6 or 7 of these #06s on pre-order. I'll have to go work the streets!!:confused::eek:

I'm excited, this will be my first GEC purchase since the #14 run, and there's nothing on the horizon that I'm overly excited about. So, I better enjoy this one

I can't wait to get my mitts on one of the muslin micartas. I count about 50-60 of them in this photo. Hopefully there's enough to go around.

This might sound crazy but I dont like the un-X-ld shields. I guess it looks modern to me, kind of like it doesnt fit on a tradional style knife. Reminds me of a logo you might see on a hip hop musicians oversized t shirt. What does un-X-ld mean? Unaccelled? If its shorthand for a longer word, that is also a mark of "modern" logos. Like Amazons short version AMZN. Anyway what am I missing about this popular shield?

It was used on the original Northfield knives from the mid 1800's to the early 1900's. Nothing modern about it.

Hmmm well thanks for the lesson! I guess it has timeless quality then if it can be mistaken as modern. Id say thats a mark in its favor as far as my opinion is concerned.
There was a tradition of branding knives XLNT (excellent) IXL (I excel) etc.
It's so old, it's new again. :D
