2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

I got my first #23 from this run in yesterday’s mail! This one is the #23L Beaver Tail. I’ve got a Bullet 2B, a Bullet “L” (or whatever shield?), a Antique Autumn Natural Bone “L”, and a Mesquite “L” still to go. I won’t say this Beaver Tail is perfect, but it’s close enough for me! ;) The blade locks rock solid when opened with absolutely no side play. The pull is a very manageable 7 and smooth. The blade is centered. The fit and finish is everything I have come to expect from Great Eastern Cutlery! I’m a happy camper! :)

Really wishing I wouldn't have missed the Kifer SFO...

If the pull on the LL is as much as I fear, then there will be at least one that pops up as available...

I was a bit disappointed to hear that the LL versions still had a very strong pull.

I guess I really don't understand the logic there, but I'll know once it's in my hands.

Yea, I am hoping I can get one. But the pull on my Beaver LL is ridiculous. People are saying a nice 7 everywhere it seems. But I'd say mine is an 8. Maybe I need to eat more wheaties though. I'm sure it will break in over time, but the LL is the strongest of my 3 23s, and that doesn't make sense to me.

You aren't alone, mine's an absurdly huge number. Into the collection she goes, plenty of other knives to carry.

Yeah, like I mentioned before, I took it in to a saddle shop looking for a sheath and the owner came over, guy in his mid to late 70’s with “working man’s hands” and was like, “Whatcha need a sheath for? This is the way knives are SUPPOSED to be made,” and to emphasize his point, opened and closed the knife rapidly 6 or 7 times in succession like it was no big deal. He handed it back to me straight-faced, but as I took it I glanced back up at him and he had this smirk on his face and you know exactly what he was thinking!

Which is fine. I sure couldn’t do it, but then I work smarter, not harder. The sheath works great! I wore it all weekend and the last two days. The belt loop is loose enough that it doesn’t catch when sitting down or moving around, and my shirt covers it so it’s not obvious I’m carrying something. It’s in my edc rotation from now on!

It’s not just the pulls, It’s the half stops I don’t like. It’s kinda like having square wheels on a vehicle that stop every quarter turn or stopping every step while walking. It’s just un natural.

Bullworker?...dynamic tension...
Why do I get the feeling these 23s will now be gazumped by skinny little weeds ? Better get down the beach and stsrt kicking sand:D

I hear ya, but I like the half stops. It's part of the process for me...nail nick the first part then pinch the second part. It's the Zen of knife opening.

For you guys and gals getting the new #23 Trappers that are having a difficult time with hard pulls, you might try this. Insert your thumb nail solidly in the nick and instead of trying to pull the blade out of and away from the frame/handle pull the frame/handle away from the blade. This should give you a bit more leverage. This idea sprung up back when the first #23 Pioneers - 2006' 2007' 2008, etc. - came out.
