2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

Wow!

Surprised the pull is a solid 7 plus, LL doesn't need a spring this strong.

Got my first 23 today, which is also my first GEC LL. To be honest... I don't get it. Having a pull that almost rips my nail off and a LL is pointless. The knife is beautiful. The liner feels fine in hand. It's a great size. But that spring tension is more of a hazard than a benefit. Will not be kept.
Some of you love the big strong spring, and that's cool. I'm not trying to yuck your yum. Just not for me.

If the pull on the LL is as much as I fear, then there will be at least one that pops up as available...

I was a bit disappointed to hear that the LL versions still had a very strong pull.

I guess I really don't understand the logic there, but I'll know once it's in my hands.

Maybe someone with more experience with regards to the tradition of this pattern can chime in but I am having a hard time understanding why a knife with a lock requires such a stiff spring. Any knife that I have handled with a lock (back or liner) always opens easily and smoothly, locking firmly into place. Perhaps it is the nature of it being a liner lock and GEC not wanting to do the spring differently with the single blade versions?

I was going to post you a link to the GEC website, but lo and behold, the pictures have been removed! Not sure what to think about that. . .
Thought I was losing it. I saw them quickly before I left work, then went to take a closer look when I got home and couldn't find them. I do think they'll look much better once they're finished. I wonder if that's why they removed them.

That Blue Camel Bone will be tough to beat though!

Got my LL cherry in today. I was kind of skeptical about it when I ordered it. I thought it would be a little too thin but the extra liner makes it almost as wide as my 43 frontier which fits perfectly in the hand. If the pull on my 43 is a 5 I would say my 23 is a high 7 low 8 right out of the tube.

I do wish the bolster was rounded like the 43. It seems like the squared off end will cause snag points in the pocket unless its in a slip.

The contour of the LL is a little off from the copper liner starting at the hump up the to thumb lever. Not much but enough for my surveyor eyes to notice. Over all I'm happy with it. Now I just have to get some patina on it and that etch off. Hopefully the etch wears off like the PPP does, last time that took about a month.

Dang, that blue camel bone is a stunner and would make a great collector. A little to “WOW” for my pocket however says Mr. Modesty.....
