2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

great work! And you can have clean work or get more work done- pick one! It takes me so long to finish a project it gets hard to start the next one, sometimes.
Right, it's really just about carving. Spending time doing something that interests you.

That’s usually how I figure out there’s a problem; cutting through the end grain I’ll see the gouges from a burr or the fibers compressing due to a dull section.
Yes... shaving across endgrain will show you very quickly the condition of your edge. I saw him carve a shaving off the end of a stick of basswood that was transparent... something to shoot for.

great pic! Good to see knives being used...
This is my first attempt at a ball in cage, using the red/black pocket carver..
It's also the first time I've ever had a blade patina, starting at the spine... sweaty hands, I suppose.

Your "first attempts" are impressive View attachment 1315392

I'd be happy with that after, like you know, the 100th attempt :)

Slightly acidic and salty hand oils do that. All my users feature that. I love the gray color they develop. Sometimes I’ll even get some temporary reddish color that becomes a dark gray.
Is that pine? Tough stuff to work with, considering how soft it is. Turned out great!!

That was a piece of what is supposed to be basswood from good ol' Home Depot. It carves pretty well....
I'll probably look around for some better quality basswood when this dwindles down.

No basswood I have seen has grain like that. o_O I was thinking pine as well.
It was advertised as a 1x1 basswood square dowel, but it didn't look like the images I'd seen of basswood.... it carves pretty well, but the grain can be pretty tough. At least it was cheap... :D

Thanks very much  My user skills are only in connexion with the cutting type ;) everyday 2 oranges get cut for juicing, then the hulls are chopped up for the bio-bag, plus other fruits I eat during the day. Not on the same level of 'carving' as some of the fine work we see here :D But 101 pages of appreciation for all these beautiful knives is a strong testament:cool:

:( While I was whittling while ago, I noticed that both of the secondaries on my red/black carver are loose. One is worse than the other, but both of them have side to side wobble. The main blade is still tight.
Has anyone else noticed this, or am I the "lucky one" ?
I wouldn't think this is something that we should expect from these carvers... at least I hope not...

 that sucks. I'm sure I have used mine as much as any one and mine are all solid.

I don’t think I’ve witness any side-to-side play, my friend. That’s really unfortunate- that would bother me a lot. It stands to reason that play in one would translate to play in the other- there’s no anchor between the blades, so a theoretical 5 thousandths on one side is really the net gap across the blades.

one blade is slightly thicker than the other to keep the gaps closed. Is this a blade flexing issue? The thicker one would flex slightly less than the other.

I’ve had great experience with sending my knife back for correction. GEC got it back to me within a month.

No... this is actual wobble. It's pretty evident. I just don't know how I missed it until now.
I imagine I'm stuck with it, at least for the foreseeable future. I suppose I could put it aside and use one of the Tidioute carvers, then see what GEC has to say after the purge is over. Or, I suppose I could try to peen it tighter, but I'm not sure how effective that would be.... perhaps one of the rebuilders on here would know how to do it.

I’ve peened some cheap knives with mixed success, partially due to the unevenness of cheap knives and their parts. Personally I believe GEC will likely honor the warranty. They fixed my 06 Pemberton which had blade play while it was closed.

and yes, definitely in the mean time go use one of the Tidioutes!!
