2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Spencergarden Spencergarden You may well be surprised by the 62, a hulk it is not, carries very light and unobtrusive.

CASE's Mini Copperhead is a nice enough knife no question, but it is really tiny and the secondary Pen blade usually has plenty of cant (that's kind of blade droop whereby the blade does not open out smartly but noticeably sags away from the spring)

I have a mini copperhead, and to me, it feels substantially smaller than the 62. It might not be, on paper, but it just feels smaller.... you should find a 62 and handle it... it feels very nice with rounded bolsters. I think the word that pops into my mind each time I use mine is "sleek"... another one you might consider, if you can find it, is the Case swayback jack. It's sort of an inbetween size.

Back to the topic... I may give in and get the other micarta.. my resistance is crumbling...

It's hard not to crumble with so many great knives available. Thanks for the perspective, and thanks Will Power Will Power too.

I'm still going to consider both the Case and GEC. I'm okay with something substantially smaller than a 62. A watch pocket knife with a straight edge + a 91mm Victorinox is all I need in my day to day life.

I know I'd be happy with either, and I know I'd be happy with both, which is my dilemma. Just trying to stay within some semi-imaginary limit of responsibility.

Also, the Sway Back is already on my list of contenders too. There's a version with Sycamore wood handles and a propeller shield, which I think might a new offering, that seems like the bee's knees.

YES YES YES YES!!! I got my smooth bone carver.
I talked myself out of it,
then Jiki Jiki talked me back in...
then I talked myself out of it...
then Jiki Jiki rolls me back in...
then I talk myself out of it...
then I see how gorgeous it looks and I pull the trigger.

and now the tracking begins... shhhh... I’m stalking USPS...

I've been on the fence about ordering a 62 since the pattern was announced. It's just a little bigger than I generally prefer.

So I'm strongly considering ordering a Case Mini Copperhead with the wharnecliffe main instead. It has a nearly identical blade configuration, and seems like it would be equally as nice in pocket. Plus it's stainless, something that isn't too common in my collection, so I'll be more likely to use it in the humid summer.

This was only loosely related to the 62, hope that's okay. I still might crumble and pick up a 62 too.

if I may- I recommend strongly against the mini copperhead. Looks great on paper, but I inherited one from my late father, and he never used it. So I sharpened it. It had a proud secondary point, so I filed the kick only to find the secondary is a touch too long to fit nicely in the blade well.

I absolutely love the swayback, but I will say it’s a little clumsy in a forward saber grip. The handle is just a touch too short with too much sway for the size. I could peel potatoes all day long with it, or skin oranges for zest because it works well for pull cuts.

I think you’d probably be happier with a #62 for the money.

Oh no don't blame me.

Me too. I blame you all. :p
I will say I'm quite relieved that the upcoming 23s don't interest me.

Jiki was all like, naw ENGRSorenson, you’d never pull the trigger. You’re not whittler enough to do it. You’re wife’s probably already given you permission but you won’t... chicken! That’s too much knife for your little baby hands, little baby! Waaaa! Waaaa!

im pretty sure that’s verbatim from a few pages ago.

i, too, had an easier time pulling the trigger with #23’s on the horizon.

Nah, if it were me it would have gone something like this.
It's ok don't buy one. I'm sure they will make them again next year. You probably don't even want these thin pointy warncliff blades and ratty cover options. Wait for the next run.

I didn't realize the white carvers had started dropping... I missed the reserves for them, so I will have to try to get one the old fashioned way... by networking :D
Hopefully there will be enough to go around, if the numbers reported are accurate...

I wonder if being able to get Stag on a large knife is coming to an end?
Larry
I’ve heard India has protections on sambar. Not sure where GEC sources it. I appreciate stag, and my dad loved it, but I am slightly concerned that it’s a resource that doesn’t seem as much of a byproduct as something like cattle bone. I think there will likely be a day where we see an end to stag on production knives.

thats why I don’t mind passing over stag. Someone else can enjoy it enough for both of us and maybe save a resource.

I think most stag is pretty much a by-product, if they are like other deer... they drop their antlers every year, and grow a new, usually larger set. I could be wrong about that, though... I've never researched it...

Self-fulfilling prophesy, just a week late. Last week I predicted the Carvers would show up while I was hiking with the dogs, our Monday ritual. Actually went later than usual today, and sure enough- came and went at DLT while we were out...

Sambar do shed their antlers each year, I think the larger issue may be the total number of deer. They are listed as vulnerable.

Ah... got it. We need to import some of them for private ranches over here... worked crazy well for nilgai...
