2020 GEC #74 Mustang Thread

Or over zealous demand and short supply.
yeah, for sure. I feel bad for the guys who offer them at reasonable prices when I see some folks taking scalps out there. It's like the King Solomon problem: two distributors come to me with prices, and one guy is reasonable? I'd gladly give the reasonable distributor the unreasonable price. I want to reward people for that kind of behavior.

Regardless- the knives looked flawless. I hope all of you who got one uses it and loves it enough for me, too. perfect choice of a shield and the wood was fantastically figured. the bare head I think is the perfect way to show off that spectacular wood. I'm not the biggest drop point fan, I think I prefer clips to drop points or spears, but honestly they did a great job with the shape of that one.

On a side note Helvie carving knives recently changed their sales method from made to order to produce and drop. Well their first drop was this morning. It sold out faster than these ironwood. :D I have no idea how many of each they made, but bam they were gone. I scored only one.

And yet the Ironwood versions were damn pricy. I think some folks took advantage of the flawless choices.
If getting through a dealer who is not gouging, I don't think the prices were bad, these seem to be jumping in $10 increments from micarta - jigged bone - ironwood, I'm guessing the stag will be a slightly bigger bump, possible $20 over the ironwood. I think a fair price for whats being offered

at ~80-90 bucks I'd say the Ironwoods were the greatest value for a knife in it's class today... I mean... if I even had a chance to buy one. I was seeing them upwards of $120, and though that's a fine, gorgeous knife, $120 starts to give me pause and question if it's worth it. To date I've never spent more than ~$120 for a knife, and that was the exception rather than the rule.

At around that price point I start looking at what the steel is, how much steel is there, or I look at how exotic the cover material is, or if there's anything super unique about the knife to justify it. Some folks don't have to think twice about that, or even flinch at sticker shock- I'm jealous. I wish I had that luxury. Still, that Ironwood #74 is a darn fine example of an artfully done American pocket knife.

I'm shocked at the prices some knives have taken in the last year or two, some are people definitely much richer than I. The dealers who I try and purchase from have had the ironwoods listed at about $103....after that its just tacking on profit.

I am so glad I got mine last year before it became near impossible to get anything Helvie. On a side note if you haven't, you should try OCCT. Honestly, it's a draw in my opinion for usability and quality. I use my OCCTs as often as my Helvies. And as an added bonus, OCCT are easier to get!

Back on topic; I gotta say I am hoping for a Stag as much as an Ironwood. That bare head stag looks fantastic to me!

I'm sure this isn't the place for this kind of conversation, but that #74 is remarkable. It's a pattern that's been done before, and as far as I can tell historically it wasn't as popular as it's stallion brother, yet watch them fly!

As far as profits are concerned, a smart person would charge whatever they wanted for those ironwoods. I think it's tacky, especially since GEC doesn't see any of that additional profit, but clearly people will spend whatever it takes to get one.

I would have bought one for $103 bucks, and felt pretty good about it. It's a quality-looking knife.

Fantastic knife. Needed some flushing on my example, but absolutely perfect. Way to go GEC. This thing is really skinny!

One of the things that really impressed me with the #23 run is how nice and thin the blades are. Seeing that the Mustang is almost a "mini" version of the 23, I am excited to see the thinness reproduced in a smaller knife.

My first 2 should be here in the next day or two - I'm looking forward to checking them out.
