I really doubt that it was a Porch member who missed out that paid that much for the knife. In fact, I'd be surprised if anyone pays for that knife; more likely it's one of those who have taken it upon themselves to troll the flippers with bullshit bids and purchases.

Nah, some people have more money than sense. $760 to one person is $76 to another

If they were going to troll the flipper, why not just buy it? Why do a Best Offer? And why not make it high enough to guarantee it would be accepted . . . $989? And I **think** eBay doesn't take down a listing under a Best Offer until the payment is made, unlike an auction which just ends when time is up.

No, I think someone paid that. Hopefully a "Porch member" to whom it was very important . . . maybe someone who wanted to give one to a sick father or brother or someone else close who is having hard times, to cheer them up. I'd rather it be that than just some random uber-rich hedge fund douchebag for whom $760 might as well be 76 cents. YMMV.

Some day someone may find this old knife tucked away in an obscure location. They will never know what a shit storm in a bowl of cheerios that this gem churned up.

I"d guess patina would increase the street value for hipsters. Just like those pre-ripped jeans and distressed leather jackets.
On the topic of patina, six years on this post still cracks me up every time I think about it:
Tell the dealer you'll pay extra if he'll stick it in a potato overnight and kick it across the parking lot first.
That's the pre-ripped jeans of the slipjoint world right there. ;)

Oddly enough, I was unaware of this thread until last night. I have some comments to make.

The first rule of Feedback on this forum: If no money changed hands, there is no feedback to leave.
I notice a lot of bitchy comments by folks who don't spend much time in the Traditional Forum. If you don't have a dog in the race, keep out of it.

Nobody has lost their money in this thing. If you purchased a knife, you either have it or it is in shipment.
500 knives at ~$100 apiece is $50,000. And nobody lost any. So let's keep that part straight. That's a hefty sum and it's all accounted for.

I read complaints about order of shipment. Deal with it. 500 knife orders is not something that organizes itself, and it does not happen overnight when there is only one person doing it all. It's a horrendous amount of work to organize and Barry worked his hind end off doing it. So knock that off, too.

You folks are confusing skullduggery with a massive amount of work. Sweet talking GEC into make a special order and organizing that order was a huge, huge task. GEC sells every knife they can make. The stopped doing SFO's. There's no reason for them to fuss with our order, but Charlie talked them into it. Barry then collected the money and it got paid to GEC. Barry is allowed to get paid for his time. Because it's a LOT of time and effort on his part. Barry and Charlie did it as good as they knew how. If errors were made, they were honest errors and not because somebody was pulling a fast one.

For any Traditional Folks regulars who did not get a chance to order a knife, I've read several posts by folks who missed out, but contacted Barry and got taken care of anyway. If you still missed out. I'm sorry. It was not purposeful.

Could it have gone better? Undoubtedly.
Were errors made? Yup.
Were the errors on purpose? No. They weren't.
Were the mods perfect in overseeing this? No. We weren't. There were miscommunications. And by the time we figured out what was up, it was too late to do anything about it.

For Traditional Forum folks who think the forum knife is fun, it isn't. It's a horrendous process. It has gotten worse every year. At its current size, it is completely unmanageable. with huge sums of money at risk. The forum knife is a total disruption to the Traditional Forum and is not something I am in favor of doing again. Ever.

The Traditional Forum was never supposed to be about buying an annual knife. It is supposed to be about sharing our enjoyment of traditional cutlery. That's supposed to be sharing information about traditional knives, not information where to buy the latest GEC. And not fussing over what the forum knife is going to be this year. I am SO done with that.

OK. I'm done.
